Logic's 5th Birthday: interview with Nadya Logic

Every weekend clubs around London reverberate with thumping bass lines and dance floors shake as thousands of people come together and give themselves up to aural pleasure. For some, clubbing is a passion, for others a periodic indulgence, but one thing is certain: In a city continually spoiled for choice, and where clubbers can satiate their desires every weekend (all weekend), it takes a great party indeed to break through the ranks and rise to the top, and then stay there.
In the minds of many there is only one party that truly delivers each time and that party is Logic: A highly respected and much-loved part of the club scene Logic promise an amazing night – from the line-up to the production to crowd. And as the euphoric after-party glow slowly fades Logic’s followers eagerly await news of the next event.
What started as a small unassuming party at The George IV in 1999 has become legendary. From those early days Logic has evolved to become a well-oiled machine from a logistical and production perspective but the clubber is still, very firmly, at the heart of all Logic stands for…’a celebration of people’.
Values and ethos are hugely important to Logic, the focus of parties is on the clubber, but they also have enormous respect for other promotions within the industry and the contribution they have made, and continue to make, to the scene. The ‘Logic Network’ was established last year to share information about like-minded promotions and allow everyone to benefit: promoters, DJs/performers and clubbers alike.
This year Logic celebrate their 5th birthday. In the lead-up to their big party on Saturday 31 July at The Fridge I spoke with Nadya Logic about their success, the changes they’ve experienced since its inception and her thoughts on the promotion’s future….
You've seen many London parties come and go - what makes Logic such a successful and popular party?
Both David and I have seen many club nights, both small and large, close their doors over the past five to six years for different reasons.
Some say that this is part of the evolution of the scene and change is necessary. They're probably correct, however we still look back very fondly at nights such as Pickle, Fevah, Return to the Source, Superfish and especially the ground breaking Escape from Samsara who we aspired to for so long. Without the hard work of professional promoters both past and present, the scene would have never survived. I would honestly say that Logic's success has been down to keeping it real and staying in touch with the people that really matter...no prizes for guessing who they are !
In your opinion, what differentiates Logic from other nights?
Firstly, and without sounding clichéd, Logic was never intended to be a money-making venture. It is a business, yes, and a successful one too, but very much a family business at the same time. Over the years we've operated on a "We do well...you do well" basis with our crew and associates. You may have noticed over the years that we spend little or nothing on advertising. It's quite amazing what you can achieve with 10,000 medium quality flyers and a mailing list if you have the support of the people that matter the most....once again, no prizes for guessing who they are!! The money we save in not advertising in magazines and supplements is directly spent on our production at each event. This is something we value dearly.
Every club night, whether large or small always has its supporters and we feel very privileged to have a massive faithful following. There are a large percentage of people that have attended every single Logic event since its incarnation back in 1999: if that's not support then I don't know what is !! Other Logic trademarks are our audiovisual interludes between sets which were first introduced back in 2002 at Logic – The Movie Pt1. Another risky gamble that has become an integral part of any Logic event due to the excellent feedback we receive after each event.
On a musical front, maybe not so revolutionary now but certainly then, we would always introduce DJs into our nights who had never been played on the London or even UK circuits before. Imagine Yoji Biomehanika playing a one hour set at The George IV pub in Brixton on a sunny Saturday afternoon!! Well it happened at Logic in 2000 which led to Yoji's first London appearance at Logic's Easter cracker at The Fridge that same night.
The following month Holland's own HQ star Tom Harding made his first London appearance in a large capacity club at Logic. The same year we were introducing many other Japanese star DJs such as Monobe & Shinkawa. This, surprisingly, led us to winning the UK's Best Hard Trance / Techno event in LOUD the following year, Asia's biggest Hard Dance magazine (the equivalent of the UK's Mixmag) topping Carl Cox's legendary "Ultimate Base" and all other well established UK events - Shock was the only word that came to mind at the time!!
How has the hard dance scene evolved since Logic began and what sorts of changes have you made to the parties as a result?
Well it certainly isn't anything like how it used to be!!! The scene was far more underground back in the day or it at least felt that way. The spotlight is now more focused on the DJ than the clubber in my opinion. When we used to go clubbing whether it was Samsara, Pendragon, ClubUK or wherever, we used to go to meet really good like-minded people, not even aware of who was playing that night. Of course there are still plenty of great people out there and there are plenty of great DJs out there but the scene has taken on a more commercial presence.
When Logic began in '99 we were effectively born out of the EFS days. We never hesitate in saying this as we feel quite proud and privileged to have done so. There was a clear divide between the Hard Trance nights such as Logic, Samsara, Pendragon and the Hard House nights such as Frantic, Fevah, Mind over Matter etc. Not solely in the genre of music played but in the DJs, crowd and marketing involved.
At the end of 2001 we started to see the two scenes amalgamate to some degree and consequently Logic evolved with it. This reflects in our music policy / genre to date. We consider this as one of the most positive things to have happened to the scene because it now allows promoters to work together as opposed to against each other.
Logic gets rave reviews for its amazing line-ups, stunning production and faultless organisation. There's obviously a lot going on behind the scenes to bring it all off: is there a big team effort involved?
There is a massive team effort involved in every event we put on. We have regular production meetings with our production crew and all throw new ideas into a hat. Every event has a concept essentially, sometimes not visible to the public but within the crew.
The success of these meetings are very much the make or break of any night. Our focus is 100% on quality. The success of any night simply cannot be gauged on the attendance figures. If the work is put in and the planning goes to plan then people will notice the difference. On one single Logic night there are around 40 people behind the scenes ensuring everything does happen when it is supposed to happen and with timed audiovisuals, pyros and balloon drops there is plenty of room for error.
The DJs / PAs are booked, not because of their popularity that particular month or year, but simply for the music they play and are allotted slots during the night in accordance with that. Where is all the fun you say? Logic has never been a "fun" night, we aspire to be a quality night and quality nights lead to a lot of fun!!
Do you still get as much of a high now when it all comes together as when Logic first started and what do you find the most personally rewarding?
We still get a real buzz from it, that I don't think will ever change. The best and most rewarding part of the night for us is the middle of the night, standing in the DJ box and looking out across the dance floor and seeing so many happy faces, it's priceless. In a funny sort of way, that moment becomes the reward for all of the hard work put in over the month beforehand. It's a massive buzz seeing people that you haven't seen since the last Logic event even though you have been to 100 London clubs since. That is very special indeed and very personal.
You've got a bank of some of the most popular underground hard dance DJs as well as up-and-coming acts. What's the Logic philosophy on introducing new DJs into the mix and how do you strike the right balance between the two?
We have always believed in giving up and coming DJ's and new acts a chance; you always need new talent. You never know what's hidden out there. Sometimes you just get a good feeling about someone and you know they have that something special about them.
If you don't take risks you'll never know. Take Proteus for example, he happened to be playing at a party with Rubec in Finland and gave him a CD of his which Rubec passed on to me, I then booked him to play at Logic which was his first ever UK gig. I was totally blown away by him and offered him an exclusive residency, I took a big risk booking him as I wasn't sure how he would go down at our parties especially coming all the way from Finland, which at that time had a far different sound to what we had been used to in the UK but it was a risk worth taking. Proteus is one of the headlining acts at this year’s Dance Valley and Impulz Outdoor festivals in the HQ arena which anybody I'm sure would agree is a massive achievement in a short space of time.
In 2001 and in 2003 we also threw our "Friends 1 & 2" parties. These were created to introduce new talent into the main room without the support of the usual London circuit DJs. Both parties were such a success proving that a group of up and coming DJs can together attract over 1000 people to a single event without massive headlining acts or over sensational hype.
What does Logic have in store for clubbers in the foreseeable future?
Well, as you know I have had a bit of time out this year as I recently became a mother. We took June out of the calendar this year for a well-deserved rest but have many plans for the rest of the year and 2005. As many are probably already aware, we never release information on our next event until 4/5 weeks before the date in question. We release information firstly via email and then via hand out flyers. Next time you leave Logic look for a flyer advertising the next one.....you will not find one! Risky business but much more fun!!
Are there any plans to move towards the multi-room party?
As already mentioned, we have several plans for this and next year in the pipeline. We have had several successful collaborations with other promoters in multi room environments, namely Frantic & Heat at Heaven and The Scala respectively. It's always a pleasure working with promotions that put 100% into achieving a successful end result. No matter how professionally you run your own setup, there is always something to be learnt from others. As many are aware, there are several other multi roomed venues on the London circuit that Logic are still yet to embrace but we're not saying anything yet....!
The Logic EP was released in 2003: how was this received and are there any more releases in the pipeline?
The Golden Question..!! Despite its long delay in being released mainly due to Daniel Ro relocating to New Zealand the EP received a lot of play on the London and UK arena. Peroxide management was then taken over by Kevin which seemed a natural process as Pete (K-Complex from Nu Energy Collective) was the engineer behind the original tracks. Kevin's umbrella of record labels is very successful as many are already aware. We would love to continue this as a series but at the present time our focus is fully on event management with Logic.
Logic is about to celebrate its 5th birthday. What has the journey been like and did you ever imagine that it would become such a hugely popular event?
Can't believe it has been 5 years already...Half a decade of promoting sounds - scarily long but it has been simply fantastic throughout. We've had ups and downs like all others have had but feel so lucky that our ups have extensively outweighed our down periods.
Not trying to give away all of the credit as we have both worked extremely hard over the years but once again we have had a very solid loyal following from the very start. Logic will simply remain as popular as people wish it to be hence the term we use on our flyers - "A Celebration of People".
What special treats have you, Dave and the crew got up your sleeves for 31st July/ anything you can let us in on?
Well, you'll have to come to find out..! The mere fact that we're doing the Fridge should be surprise enough!! - After the massive close down party at the start of the year we had several invites from the new proprietors to come back all of which we refused on the basis of integrity with our crowd. Seven months have past since and we felt in true tradition we simply must hold our birthday at the venue we had always rocked each year on the very same date!! There are always surprises at birthday parties and this one will be no different - The secret surprise live PA will be a surprise in true Logic style!!
Congratulations to Nadya, Dave and the Logic crew on five years of successful parties!

After starting as a very humble Saturday day party in a back street wine bar on Brixton's front line in the summer of '99 we have come a long long way since those days. We have seen many changes to the scene as we now know it and have seen many people come and go along the way. Saturday 31st July 2004 marks our 5th anniversary and to celebrate in true Logic style we are returning to the venue that we rocked for so many years - The Fridge, now known as The "New" Fridge for a one off party spectacular... This event isn't just about Logic. It's a celebration of the friends past and present that we have all made and the achievements we have all witnessed...
Logic is about the meteoric success of Shaf de Bass, DirtyDJs, Proteus, Nu Energy Collective and so many more....
Logic is about the continued success of our friends at Antiworld, Frantic, Heat and the many others, too many to name that take the risks and keep the London scene pushing forward...
Logic is about the true professionals that behind the scenes take very little credit for the productions that get better every time...but more importantly....
Logic is about the people that have kept the this union alive for so long. It's you that we owe everything to and once more, the time is here for us to ask you to join us on the dance floor..........!!
Computer Generated FX and Audio Visuals by NUROPTICS, Decor and visual enhancements by KARMA, LAK: UK dancers, Full colour lasers, 100K Combined Turbo Sound plus much more to be announced over the next few weeks...
