» Trance Trax 5

Reviewed by Pete M / Submitted 14-11-23 12:46

Label: Hooj Choons
Format: Digital
Genre: Trance / Techno

Hooj Choons unveil a new Trance Trax comp and this one further blurs the trance genre. This isn't typical trance as you know it i.e. there's no dramatic uplifts or soaring vocals; although they have done that in the past (see Tilt - Invisible) and they've also solid vocal trance i.e. This Love by Red Sun in days gone by. Oh, I remember those days! Anyway, before this reviewer gets all dewy-eyed and stupidly sentimental, lets focus on Trance Trax 5.

Again, this showcases a blurred trance genre which takes in techno vibes as well. Its sorta techno-trance. Or is it trance-techno? Anyway...this one features Hansgod, Tim French, Hidden Identity and Glenn Morrison & Dougal Fox. Oh, and Jag Limbo on the remix. On first listen, this EP kicks serious ass with the Hidden Identity track immediately standing out as a serious trance whopper. In fact, all four are whoppers but the Hidden Identity track stands out.

There's a prog structure in the Hansgod track that sparkles and shimmers in the winter air. The tough tribal beats of Outer Limits by Hidden Identity is next and that's the track that stood out for me; mainly because of the epic beat section. Tim French's "Echoes" is next and is, again, proggy but sorta trancey, which does fit the Hooj mould. The big surprise in the wobbly-wibbly vibe of Fox & Morrison's "Memories" in the form of Jag Limbo's techy take. This is definitely techno. There's little of the benign trance about this. This is prickly, sharp, techno with the slight whiff of breaks. Its very distinctly techno and its a solid closer to what is growing to be an epic series. We're in the fifth edition now and I'm anxiously awaiting the sixth.

Devilish
