There’s a bit of a clue in the title of this album that whichever ‘compilation conjurer’ put this little beauty together was thinking about good songs for driving. If this was in fact the intention (rather than an homage to crystal methamphetamine) then I think they’ve done a pretty good job.
Personally, I’m sick to death of commercial radio, the only time I would consider listening to is in fact while driving. However in lieu of that I normally put on one of my own CD’s. The problem is though that most music I have seems to be segmented to such a point where I find myself pretty much listening to the same record over and over again and I get sick-to-death after about 20mins. After all, how much scope is there for variety within the subgenre of Brazilian ambient trip hop electro funk samba?
If you ask an American (so I’ve heard) what music they like they may well say ‘house music’, although by this they can mean anything from garage to gabba. This compilation encompasses that spirit. The tone of the album ranges hugely from really funky house licks to spacey trancey tracks. The age of the tracks also spans well from modern classics such as ‘StarSailor’s rather bitter-sweet euphoric anthem ‘four to the floor’ to floor-fillers that take me right to my crazy raving days, such as BBE’s 7 days and one week. There’s also some slick house records such as ‘Silicone Soul’s – Right On!’ which still smashes it every time I’ve ever played it. It’s just too classy to get tired.
On the down side, I must admit that some of the tracks are a little on the cheesy side for me. Although to caveat that, I don’t actually know if I just think of them as cheesy now because they were so over-played at the time because everyone loved them so much, or whether because they are genuinely just made of mouse food. It’s hard to say.
Overall I would say that this is an entertaining compilation. It’s easy listening for retired ravers, or a great compilation for anyone just working out what exactly they’re in to (boys, girls, animals…). I honestly can’t ever see your train-spotting record geek sitting down intently with the purpose of listening to this album from start to finish but it is great light entertainment. And hell, it’s got to be better than the Bridget Jones soundtrack your girlfriend finds just so entertaining to torture you with driving back from a club in the wee hours (or Daniel Beddingfield in the case of Shaf de Bass).
