Greg Brookman is a producer who you may or may not have heard of before. If you have; you may be familiar with his sound, if not; don't worry, you will in the next 12 months.
If you have heard Shoot (out on SHOCK recordings), which Greg made with Tim Coe, you will already know what level of production to expect in this tune; the only word I can think to use is staggering. As with all his production work, the attention to detail matches, in my opinion, that of Nick Sentience. From the first beat you are drawn into the flow of Panzan by mesmerizing effects and quirky little noises (listening to the intro as I type this, I'm picking up on things I never noticed before. The bass line comes in with an air of subtlety about it and is as smooth as a smooth thing after a fight with a sander, the tune builds beautifully from here on, with layers of sound coming in steadily, and a great little vocal sounding hook.
The energy is somehow kept throughout the breakdown, with the groove tinged bass line bubbling over, and screeching synths being added, building up to the lead riff. A build up sure to leave the dance floor with their eye rolling in the back of their heads later, and the tune is in full flow, everything fits perfectly together, and gradually unfold into the middle 8, where the energy dropd, and builds steadily again, with a very faint acid line that is just noticeable, but make this part of the tune. It drops again without you realising, then slowly, dies down to the outro.
The excellent production, and masterful programming makes this tune an absolute gem to mix. And will go down well with almost any hard dance fan. Trancey enough for the hands in the air brigade, driving enough for the marching crew. Excellent.
Now to the remix. Colin Barratt takes the original apart, and puts it together as only he can do. Sampling most of the parts and cutting and pasting them as he sees fit (just as well he’s got good eyes for this remix malarkey then ). A lot more stop and start in layout to the original, and more driving typical of Colin Barratt. He only uses the full riff in the middle of the tune, so the whole thing is refreshing enough. I think this mix will prove massive with the harder Djs and clubbers. The perfect addtion to this release if you ask me. 9 and a half out of 10
“Decimator” is release on Hotwax Traxx on March 1st.
