Mindbenderz are back with a mesmerising, mystical, hypnotic new album filled with captivating sounds, trippy noises and intense melodies! Read on to discover more about this stunning new piece of work and the inspiration behind it!
So guys, it’s been five years since we last interviewed you here at Harderfaster. How have you both been and what have you been up to?
Thank you for having us again. We’re doing great at the moment and happy to have finally finished our new album. We’re super excited to release the album after all the hard work and we can’t wait to see if people will like it. Of course we hope they do!!!
A lot has changed in the world since then. How have you navigated the various ups and downs. especially Covid?
As for most of us, the last couple of years have been extremely challenging with Covid etc. And much of the scene has still not fully recovered unfortunately. Promotions were hit hard and many are still suffering with the after effects which of course affects parties which affects gigs which affects music sales. But we have continued to stand positive, keep focused and miraculously we have managed to maintain a certain output of releases and we think we have made the best we could out of the situation.
You’ve been playing the biggest and best parties and festivals all over the world. What are some of the most memorable events for you and why?
We feel really honoured to have secured the gigs we’ve had – past, present and future. We really do love each and every party we play; they’re always different and filled with many different smiling faces, but with one constant – the vibe is always epic. Over the last few years, we have been lucky enough to play all over the world including: Australia, Panama, Brazil, Hungary, Holland, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland, Greece and Germany of course. We’ve loved each and every gig but a couple of special ones that stand out would include (but not limited to!): Antaris, Indian Spirit, Airbeat One, Tribal Gathering and New Healing Festival as the atmospheres were absolutely insanely crazeeeee!
Do you feel you have changed artistically at all?
Our style and way of producing over the years hasn’t changed too much, but of course like everybody, we have evolved over time. With new technologies there’s new possibilities and ways of expression which is awesome and widens our creativity, but our vision and aim of how our music should sound hasn’t really changed. I think as artists our main goal is to be authentically ourselves, and tell our own stories, whatever they may be, expressing what arises naturally, and of course hoping it resonates, connects and captivates our listeners. So it’s important to not be steered or contrived or feel forced into going in certain directions… It has to be organically us or else it would be fake, and not true artistry; then you lose the true connection.
How about the production process for you, has this changed? Do you still work via Skype and then meet up in Zurich every few months to finish the tracks?
Due to Covid, it was only this year we could get back to meeting regularly. Before that we really had to do a lot of back and forth, sending sketches, discussing over WhatsApp etc. But we’re used to this way of working by now. To be able to meet up again in person was brilliant though and enabled the magic to flow!
Your 2nd album ‘Celestial Gateway’ is due for release on Iono-Music soon. The album is incredible - full of drive, energy and enriching tracks with deep basses, epic risers and enchanting sounds. Tell us about this; the concept, the tracks, the inspiration. How long did it take to make.? The highs and lows, what soft synths and hardware did you rinse?
Thank you for the feedback… Glad you like the album!
The whole process from the first track until finishing it took around 3 years. We tried to make a diverse album without any filler tracks. Our aim was to create something that works on the dancefloor but is still easy enough for home listening as well. Like most of us, we faced writer’s block from time to time, but producing music is like going fishing. Sometimes you catch something; sometimes not. But you need to go fishing…
This album was done 95% in the box, with our usual suspects like Diva, Serum, Spire, Vital, Omnisphere etc. We still like to use hardware from time to time, but software is just faster and more convenient we find.
I particularly love ‘Luna’ – especially the beautiful melody towards the end. ‘Physical Reality’ is killer too, with some seriously dangerous lines in there. I love the chaos of it, and the production sounds really fresh. What’s one of your personal favourite tracks on the album and why?
My personal favourite is the opening track ‘Celestial Gateway’. It has this full-on morning vibe sound that we grew up on and it works like a charm. ‘Serenity’ is another favourite due to its tribal groove and stomping bass which really get you moving!
The artwork is stunning. How did it come about?
The artwork was actually inspired via AI! We didn’t fancy going down the traditional psy-trance route but wanted something a bit more abstract and different, with an almost comic book likeness. We feel it’s simple yet effective, and it suits the album title perfectly. We are really happy with the results!
Tell us what’s on the horizon for Mindbenderz, gig wise…
Lots upcoming, but we are especially excited about the Iono Festival in Mexico!!! It will be on the 1st and 2nd June 2024 and is going to feature loads of our super talented artists!
Iono Music has a beautiful deep long story with Mexico, we have been to this wonderful country many times, and we love been there with such an amazing crowd of psychedelic music lovers.
We are preparing for an amazing return - taking it a notch higher, promising an experience that will leave you spellbound! Prepare to be transported to a sonic wonderland by some of the most iconic artists in the global psychedelic trance scene. Our lineup is a carefully curated selection of both established legends and rising stars, promising non-stop music that'll make your soul dance. We can’t wait!!!!
Lastly, if you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
For me that would easily be ‘Lord of the Rings’. A book and a movie, that I can never get enough of!
