Psy-Sisters celebrate their 10-Year Anniversary this year and what better way to do it than having a party! On Sunday 18th December 2022 from 1600-2300 Psy-Sisters take over Basing House, Kingsland Road, London E2 8AA for 7 hours of blasting, powerful psychedelic energy! We decided to catch up with the DJs who’ll be gracing the decks at this musical delight to find out more!
EBRU AL
What is your earliest memory of music?
Michael Jackson, George Michael, Tracy Chapman to The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Prodigy. My first rave culture experience started back in 1993 at a warehouse with acid-house.
What is your biggest inspiration to make/play music?
I play whatever makes me want to dance! It might be a selfish approach but so far it hasn’t failed me.
What has been one of your biggest music achievements to date?
Playing Ozora Festival on the main stage and also my first ever production ‘Illuminate’ which sat as a Beatport number one for nearly two weeks.
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself?
I can drink a bottle of tequila by myself
What does Psy-Sisters mean to you? How did you first become involved with the collective?
I always admired the musical talent and achievements of Psibindi from a distance before getting involved. For me Psy-sisters represents strong female power within the music industry. The Psytrance genre is still strongly run by males. I am for equality of men and women, but there are some facts that we cannot deny. Women and non-binary DJs need encouragement more than ever, and Psy-sisters does just that!
You are playing at the next Psy-Sisters Event – the 10 Year Anniversary Party on the 18th December at Basing House, Kingsland Road, London E2 8AA. What can people look forward to the most about your set and the party?
The party is going to be the meeting of legendary, powerful women on decks. It is a rare thing to experience. I play full-on Psytrance these days, but I am planning something more progressive for this set including tunes that will bring back memories to all. I’ve already started to dig into my archive of golden oldies.
What musical aspirations do you have for the future?
I do not have great expectations from life in general. My motto is to be happy and make other people happier. If I can deliver that through music then that is a big achievement for me.
What advice can you give to the next generation of aspiring women, trans and non-binary DJs and music producers?
Just be yourself. Don’t be scared of being different. Do not compare yourself with others. Being unique is a virtue. Finally, be nice! Success without being nice means nothing!

What is your earliest memory of music?
At the risk of showing my age, my Mum had a stack of 45s that she used to play on a record player when I was a toddler. If I was good, I was allowed to choose the next one. She worked at a radio station for a while when I was a kid growing up in New Zealand and I’ll never forget the excitement of new vinyl coming in – especially as she’d usually managed to get a promo copy before a family friend who owned a record shop!
What is your biggest inspiration to make/play music?
The dancefloor! I’ve spent some of my happiest moments on dancefloors at gigs, raves, clubs and festivals, and just want to help create the same atmosphere and vibe that’s been such a huge inspiration to me over the years.
What has been one of your biggest music achievements to date?
Every mix and gig are an achievement! I’ve DJed outside twice – at Black Pearl Festival in Wales and at a house party with my Psy-Sister Wendy aka Ma?pka (as Amaluna) – where the weather has been so bad the roof/stage has literally blown in. Keeping DJing when everything around you is literally falling down is definitely an achievement.
Getting signed to Free-Spirit Records was an awesome personal achievement too, as I’d been helping Jay OM with press/promo since FSR’s inception and never imagined at the start that I’d ever get signed to the label myself!
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself?
I’m actually really boring. I’ve got a pretty full-on day job so don’t get out to as many gigs and parties these days as I’d like to. Most of my friends and family think I’m a bit of a freak for still trying to keep DJing in my free time – and they’ve probably got a point.
What does Psy-Sisters mean to you? How did you first become involved with the collective?
Psy-Sisters has been an incredible inspiration to me over the last 10 years and helped give me the confidence to start DJing myself. When Rena first approached me about being involved in the collective all those years ago, I had no idea that I would ever DJ out, as I’m very shy and have always been happy to help out behind the scenes.
I was initially part of the promotions and organisation arm of the collective, flyering events to promote the first Psy-Sisters parties, writing interviews to feature the artists playing (never thinking for a minute that I’d be on the other side of the screen myself one day!) and helping run the door at the first event. Seeing it evolve into the global collective it is today has been absolutely fantastic and it’s all down to the hard work of the Psy-Sisters all over the world who’ve made this happen, especially Rena (Psibindi) and Reshma (Directors) and Kamilla (DJ Sati, Creative Manager) and of course yourself Jess, as our Digital Marketing and PR Manager.
You are playing at the next Psy-Sisters Event – the 10 Year Anniversary Party on the 18th December at Basing House, Kingsland Road, London E2 8AA. What can people look forward to the most about your set and the party?
I’m putting together a prog set to warm things up for the full on psy trance to follow. I’m playing after Monkey Business’s techno set so will probably start with a bit of psy tech then prog it up hehe. I should point out the style of prog I play is usually more on the bush prog/Zenonesque side of things, but always on the more uplifting side of that spectrum.
As for the party – have you seen the lineup?! It’s going to be absolutely epic with so many fantastic Psy-Sisters playing. I’ll be getting down to Basing House early to catch Monkey Business, then can’t wait to finish playing and hit the dancefloor! It’s my birthday in December and this will be my first time out dancing for a while, so I’m looking forward to having it large to Ebru, Florescence, Rena, Sati and Nuky!
What musical aspirations do you have for the future?
I’d love to find the time to start learning music production but appreciate that’s going to be a long journey. I’d also like to play in my home country of New Zealand at some stage of the game. There’s a fantastic scene down under with some amazing events taking place.
What advice can you give to the next generation of aspiring women, trans and non-binary DJs and music producers?
I know ‘Don’t give up’ sounds like a cliché, but it’s so true! Don’t take it personally if people don’t get back to you straight away. Having been a promoter myself with a busy day job, I’ve inadvertently pissed off a load of people over the years by not replying to them with feedback on their latest mix or release. Sometimes it can literally take years for people to get back to you, but if they like what you play, they’ll hopefully get there in the end. Or they might not for all sorts of reasons… don’t let it get you down and move on!
Never underestimate the power of personal contact. If there’s an event you want to play at, buy a ticket and get down there early. Offer to help out on the night and write some positive and constructive feedback afterwards. Promoters will notice and you’ll have the edge over another DJ who’s just emailed them a link to their latest mix – especially if you’ve brought some mates with you to the party.
Finally, no matter how tough things might be, always try to be a pro and keep smiling. Set times change, equipment can and will be challenging (best check in advance and get there well before your set to make sure you’ve got what you need to play) and especially in the current climate, sometimes events don’t even happen. If you accept it all with good grace and make the best of it, you’re more likely to be asked back.

FLORESCENCE
What is your earliest memory of music?
My earliest memory of music was when I was in the car with my Mum playing jazz and songs from musicals, whilst teaching me to sing the harmony line with her. I really owe my Mum a lot as she flooded my childhood with music and as a family we were always singing.
What is your biggest inspiration to make/play music?
I love the feeling of playing and seeing so many happy people smiling back at me! I really do believe that Psytrance is so healing, it’s an active meditation.
What has been one of your biggest music achievements to date?
This summer playing at Noisily has got to be my biggest achievement to date! Playing after the legend Regan and seeing the whole crowd go wild was such an amazing feeling! That and landing a set at Shiva Valley! There’s no sweeter feeling than playing right on the beach!
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself
I am learning to speak Hindi!
Mujhe psytrance pyar hai!
What does Psy-Sisters mean to you? How did you first become involved with the collective?
I became involved with the collective after meeting the amazing Rena aka Psibindi at the late Club 414 back in 2018! She gave me the amazing opportunity to be part of Psy-Sisters. I feel so proud to be a part of a group of such talented women that all support each other and have each other’s backs! This is a unique and diverse collective that really celebrates everyone’s successes. I feel so lucky that I have this kind of support so early on in my DJ career.
You are playing at the next Psy-Sisters Event – the 10 Year Anniversary Party on the 18th December at Basing House, Kingsland Road, London E2 8AA. What can people look forward to the most about your set and the party?
You’re in for a real treat! It’s not every day that you come across a psytrance event with an all-female line up. That’s some serious girl power! I play in the sub-genre of Twilight, so you can be sure to look forward to fast pace driving basslines and high energy groovy, funky leads that will make you bounce all over the place!
What musical aspirations do you have for the future?
I am working really hard on my productions and am hoping to have some original tracks out soon! In the future my biggest wish is to be able to travel the world with my music and play gigs in as many countries as I can! I can’t wait to share my music with the world!
What advice can you give to the next generation of aspiring women, trans and non-binary DJs and music producers?
Don’t be afraid to be your authentic self, and even if your motivation dips sometimes, that's normal, but never give up! Always remember that you were born to do this.

MONKEY BUSINESS (OLGA BOKAN & MATEA MILJEVIC )
What is your earliest memory of music?
OB: 50 Cent - Candy Shop - my Mum used to love this and always play it in the car, and also some Serbian singers that my Mum used to listen to also.
MM: Listening to it in the car with my parents, especially my Dad. He had good taste in music and he always liked to drive fast - best combo.
What is your biggest inspiration to make/play music?
OB: I have been addicted to raves and electronic music since 2012 and have been partying /stuck at the afters ever since. Many times, I was always the one who ended up playing tunes from my phone and everyone was always amazed by my music selection and insisting I should start DJing. Since nobody in my family is musically talented I never thought that DJing could be a possibility for me, until 10th of March when Matea brought her controller to my house and last minute decided that I should keep it and consider it as my present from her for my birthday. It was definitely one of the best presents ever. So, my biggest motivation to start DJ-ing was Matea actually.
MM: It all started with the fact that I love to dance! The energy and emotions music can give me is incredible and I yearned to share this with other people.
What has been one of your biggest music achievements to date?
OB: I actually started DJing and mixing very recently, like 4-5 months ago. So even though all this is very new to me and still just the beginning, I am very dedicated to it and I am progressing fast because I absolutely love it.
MM: Opening for Bas Ibellini during a Halloween party at Laylow. He is just on another level, and I'm still a huge fan and love to listen to him, especially when he plays vinyl.
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself?
OB: I was always the person who was dancing in front of the speaker and never actually thought I would be behind it. I always had stage fright especially at school when I had to do presentations, so as much as I always wanted to DJ, I thought it was something impossible for me. But, after the second time on the stage, I got to love it so much I felt like I had actually found my place.
MM: You wouldn't guess it if you see me DJing, but I'm a lot more introverted than you may think. In fact, I spend most of my time alone or in my own world (books and music) to recharge my batteries.
What does Psy-Sisters mean to you? How did you first become involved with the collective?
OB: When I first moved to London, Psy-Sisters in Vauxhall was one of the first events I attended. I really like the fact that it is an event where only female DJs and producers are involved, which is amazing since there are not that many of us in the UK. Psy-Sisters shows power of females. I got involved with the collective through Rena Psibindi who I met back in 2016. Back then I was telling her how much I would like to start DJing and she offered to give me lessons. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, I never got the chance to actually start the lessons, but now, 6 years later, here we are. I was honoured when Rena asked me to be part of the 10 Year Anniversary Party of Psy-Sisters.
MM: Through my childhood bestie and new music partner Olga. She told me about it as she knows the organisers and I immediately wanted to be a part of it. I think it's super cool to support each other in this way in a predominantly male industry. I worked in finance, which is similarly all male, and found the women there were each other's most fierce competition instead of supportive - I found this very sad.
You are playing at the next Psy-Sisters Event - the 10 Year Anniversary Party on the 18th December at Basing House, Kingsland Road, London E2 8AA. What can people look forward to the most about your set and the party?
OB: I think firstly the fact that this will be our first live performance under the name Monkey Business and the fact that we are doing it as a duo. We have been best friends literally since we were born and our dream for the future was always to do something together whatever that might be; it turned out DJing is the thing we both have a passion for. Everything we do together is natural and comes out unique. We always have fun together and that just creates a good energy and vibe therefore I am pretty sure we will be able to make everyone on the dance floor have fun.
MM: I think we have a good energy and always have fun together playing together in unexpected ways. Be sure, we will make you dance!
What musical aspiration do you have for the future?
OB: When I really enjoy and like something I aim high – there are no limits. I am just at the beginning of this career and I already kind of feel satisfied with my progress so I guess time will tell. One thing I know I want, is to achieve playing both psytrance and techno so I get to experience the best of both worlds.
MM: I started playing with gigs at bars, restaurants and similar in West London and I want to go back towards what I enjoy most which is the underground scene. This is the whole point of DJing for me, to enjoy my passion and have fun. I would also love to learn production soon.
What advice can you give to the next generation of aspiring women, trans and non-binary DJs and music producers?
OB: However hard and impossible it might feel in the beginning, it’s not. If you really have a passion for it, patience and motivation you will do it and you will also love it!
MM: Just go for it. Don't be scared of making mistakes, they happen to everyone.

What is your earliest memory of music?
My first memory of music comes from my parents. My father was always passionate about music and had a big sound system at home. I grew up listening to Pink Floyd, Eurythmics, Grace Jones and others.
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself?
I used to be a makeup artist for many years doing TV and fashion shows in Lisbon.
What does Psy-Sisters mean to you? How did you first become involved with the collective?
Psy-Sisters was founded by my bridesmaid and good friend Rena Psibindi, so the collective is very close to me.
I’ve seen all the work Rena and the Psy-Sisters team have done over the years to evolve the platform and bring gender equality into the psy scene.
You are playing at the next Psy-Sisters Event – the 10 Year Anniversary Party on the 18th December at Basing House. What can people look forward to the most about your set and the party?
Expect a full power set, packed with intensity and positive infectious energy! Be prepared to dance like never before!
What musical aspirations do you have for the future?
My biggest aspiration is to play at Tomorrow Land! This would be the pinnacle of my career after playing at Boom festival.
What advice can you give to the next generation of aspiring women, trans and non-binary DJs and music producers?
Whatever you choose to do, do it with passion and because you love it. Ultimately do it for yourself!

What has been your biggest music achievements to date?
Having a music career spanning over three decades feels like an achievement in itself!
Establishing Psy-Sisters 10 years ago and featuring hundreds of talented women, trans and non-binary artists is one of my greatest achievements. We have interviewed pioneering DJ Lisa Lashes, been featured in Thump and hosted two sell out all female DJ line up events in London. Our Global South campaign which spotlights women who use music as a tool to fight oppression was featured in Mixmag.
I was honoured that global superstar DJ Nina Kraviz featured ‘Binary Star’ (Psibindi & Aphid Moon) in her Hot Steel set.
It’s been a lifelong dream to hear my music on BBC Radio 1. Last year that dream came true when DJ Jaguar championed ‘Luminous Rays’ (Psibindi & Mechanimal) on her BBC Introducing Dance show and then again on BBC Asian Network.
Opening the Tribe of Frog stage with a live Psy-Trance vocal / DJ set at Boomtown Fair this year was pretty monumental too! The dance floor was lit! All that stacked energy from the past two years was finally unleashed!
My future goals are to play at Boom and Glastonbury.
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself?
I have recently become a mentor for The Girls Network charity, who offer mentoring opportunities for teenage girls. Life is really hard on young people today, which is why I decided to become a mentor. I think it’s important to aid their development by sharing valuable life skills, knowledge and experience.
It feels hugely rewarding to be a mentor and I am proud to support our future generation.
What does Psy-Sisters mean to you?
Psy-Sisters culture derives from an ethos of leveraging each other to succeed. Making a social impact is what really underpins our platform. Music is a vessel for positive change and this is what we ultimately stand for.
We have big plans to scale Psy-Sisters starting with the launch of our trendy new website www.psysisters.com] designed by Dream Web Solutions. We’ve finally cemented our platform in cyber space! Check it out!
You are playing at the next Psy-Sisters Event – the 10 Year Anniversary Party on the 18th December at Basing House. What can people look forward to the most about your set and the party?
This party has been a long time coming! I’m excited to host this event with such a stellar line up of brilliant women. Our event has been recommended by Resident Advisor too which is epic!
Basing House is a clubbing hotspot in Hoxton, so prepare to be dazzled by their slick visuals on the dance floor, phat sound system and hang out on their fab roof terrace!
I’m looking forward to seeing old party friends and having a Xmas drink (or two) to toast our 10 years! I can’t wait to dance to the DJs sets and spin my own tunes with a sprinkling of live vocals!
Our anniversary event wouldn’t be possible without the amazing Psy-Sisters team, our superb DJs: Nuky, Sati, FlibbertiGibbet, Ebru Al, Florescence, Monkey Business, and support from DJ Hackie of Radio Cosmica Libre. I am so grateful and proud to work with them. They are all rock stars!
What advice can you give to the next generation of aspiring women, trans and non-binary DJs and music producers?
Be determined! You can achieve any goal you set yourself, but just be prepared to work hard for it. Give yourself time to develop your DJ and music production skills. Learn about the music business and sign up to Musician’s Union because it’s so important to know your rights as an artist. Collaborate with other DJs and music producers to hone your skills and make phat tunes!

What is your earliest memory of music?
Most memories I have from childhood involve music. My parents were huge music fans so I was introduced to it early in life.
One of my most memorable music memories would be watching my Dad sipping coffee peacefully to METALLICA – Master of Puppets, it was also the moment I fell in love with metal music
What is your biggest inspiration to make/play music?
Three reasons: it's rewarding, it’s my passion, and people love it. There is nothing better than to see a crowd of people dancing to music I chose, the happiness on their faces and the vibe gives me a huge drive.
What has been one of your biggest music achievements to date?
A huge achievement for me is the fact that I am still able to showcase my music and skills at the various events and festivals.
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself?
I collect SKULLS. Currently I have over 200 pieces in my collection, I am very proud of this!
What does Psy-Sisters mean to you? How did you first become involved with the collective?
Psy-Sisters means INCLUSION, it’s a platform that represents gender minority artists in music & art. I am a core member. I remember the day when Rena (Psibindi) called me with the idea to create the collective… Straight away I was all in.
You are playing at the next Psy-Sisters Event – the 10 Year Anniversary Party on the 18th December at Basing House, Kingsland Road, London E2 8AA. What can people look forward to the most about your set and the party?
I am planning a special twilight set with loads of dark and groovy music. For those who are planning to come you won’t regret it, we have an amazing line up and music progression throughout the party!
What musical aspirations do you have for the future?
To continue what I am doing, to learn new ways of mixing different genres of music.
What advice can you give to the next generation of aspiring women, trans and non-binary DJs and music producers?
Find your style by digging deep: explore the back catalogues of artists and labels you enjoy, research when you hear a remix you like, explore other work from that remixer. Most importantly, trust your ears. Learn the dynamics of your track, in other words – know your music. Practice whenever you can; it takes time to learn new skills and once you master it – it is so rewarding. Try and prepare your sets because every gig is different and the better prepared you are the more comfortable you'll be. Focus and don’t give up!
