The Free Spirited Jay OM

Jay OM – a London based psychedelic DJ, live act, producer, label manager and promoter! With so much going on, it’s a wonder he finds the time to change his socks, let alone do an interview with me, but luckily he did. I caught up with the busy bee to find out a bit more about him, and how he finds the time to cram all this in.
Jay, you were born in Italy, and spent some early years playing guitar in local bars in Milan. When did you learn to play the guitar and what inspired you to do so?
I started playing guitar in my twenties when I received a guitar as a birthday present from my closest friends at the time, one of them Roberto had an acoustic Yamaha with a fantastic sound and I fell in love with it.
I see that you worked for a local radio station in Milan, back in the early 80’s. How did you land this job and what was the first record you bought?
Yes I worked in a Radio Station but that wasn't in Milan it was in Sardinia, Italy. At that time I was on vacation there for three months. The main reason I landed the job was because the music I was listening at the time was very different from what the locals were listening to and they were looking for something fresh. I was in the right place at the right time. The first record I bought was Pink Floyd - The Wall.
Music clearly played a huge role in your life right from the start, who were your early influences?
My Dad played accordion and played a lot in all the local festivals, this for sure inspired my love of the stage. My older sister Tina and my uncle Francesco also played a big role in my early musical journey, they are 7 and 8 years older respectively and were both into Psychedelic rock and Country music. Woodstock festival was a word I heard all the time and I was constantly exposed to the music they were listening to. I liked it, in fact I loved it! After that I saw the way the people that played this music where acting, living, dancing . . . yeah that was what triggered all.
Who or what lead you to psy-trance and when did your love for the music begin?
Being at the right moment at the right time again, I arrived in London in 1998 and on my first day I ended up at Tyssen Street Studios (sadly, it is now long gone and now all you’ll find where it once was is apartments). I think I have always been in love with music, one of my early memories is of my Dad playing Scott MCkenzie's “San Francisco” over and over again, he did this every Sunday and he looked very happy :-) and yeah spread the vibe, music makes you happy!
When did you decide you wanted to produce music?
When I couldn't find any more vinyl to play. Spending hours and hours searching through the record shops and finding nothing I really liked, so in 2003 I decided to go back to school and study Sound Recording and Music Technology and try to make music by myself and the rest as they say is history!
You have many different pseudonyms : Jay OM, Omsphere and Journey. Do you plan on launching any new act names in the future?
Yeah a few ;-) I am actually just launching a new project in collaboration with Ralph Knobloch aka Braincell/Solar Spectrum/Rastaliens, we've called the project “Crocodile Rangers”
When producing; what’s your favourite piece of equipment or soft synth?
I use my Novation Xstation synth a lot and then on the soft synth side, Reaktor/Virus A, B and Vanguard TI
Where do you get your inspiration from?
My heart.
You’ve played a multitude of gigs over the years including the amazing Universo Parallelo, what’s been one of your highlights and were there any embarrassing moments you’d care to share?
Universo Paralello 2007/8/9, Boom 2010, Vortex 2010, Origin 2011, Sonica 2005/6/9, Aurora Festival 2010, Fora Do Tempo 2008/2009, Visions Festival and Ecologic. Embarrassing moments? Not any that I can think of to be honest.
You’re label manager of the excellent Free-Spirit Records. What made you decide to start a label?
We actually started out as an agency and it went so well that the label was the logical next step.
How would you define the sound of Free-Spirit Records?
Groovy, bouncy, travelling, psychedelic, free-spirited.
You have some great acts signed to the label including: Braincell, Monastic Squid, Sati and Prozak. What do you look for when signing new artists?
Well first of all we need to like the music, then we get deeper into the personality of the artist - why they make music, what they are passionate about and why they would like to be part of Free-Spirit Records
You’ve also put on a few parties in your time, what would you say are the key ingredients to any good party?
Pretty girls, happy vibe, colours, nice musical journey, friendly environment and involvement from all the crew
You’re holding a party called ‘Implosion’ on the 24th April – this Easter Bank Holiday. What can people expect at this event?
All the above and more!
Having put parties on in both the UK and Italy – how do the scenes compare?
There are a lot of similarities, they both enjoy a good party and a good vibe, but the Italian scene is more underground and I think the Italians are more up to party, we are spoilt here in London with too much choice.
Do you think the psychedelic scene has changed over the years, and if so; in what way?
Like any style of music it is constantly evolving and is very dynamic, it ebbs and flows, there are new artists coming out all the time, it's a creative field so of course it will always be changing. But change is good, otherwise we would all get bored.
All this going on must keep you extremely busy, how do you fit it all in?
Producer wise I am very disciplined. I follow a routine as a Label Manager, I keep notes and a diary, but the most important part is the team I have behind me, they are actually the ones that make me able to make it all happen.
If you weren’t working in the music industry, what do you think you’d be doing?
Sitting in OM beach, India.
What words of wisdom can you offer to up and coming artists in the scene?
Make and play the music that comes from your heart. If you able, try to go to a school of sound engineering and music technology to increase your knowledge. After all that if the people like it then it's time to surf the wave
Lastly; what’s the future got in store for Jay OM and the Free-Spirit Records label, what are your plans?
I'm releasing an Omsphere EP together with Solar Spectrum on 3rd May and there is also a new Journey album in the makings plus the new project Crocodile Rangers with Ralph K aka Braincell/Solar Spectrum/Rastaliens. For Free-Spirit in general there is Free-Spirit Vol.VI “Phosphenes” (compiled by Jay OM) and then a host of EP's from Ital, Techyon, Shalys, Braincell and Solar Spectrum plus a few more surprises. The future is pink and the sky is the limit!
Jay – thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Good luck for the future & see you on the 24th April!
See you soon on Easter Sunday!
