Andy Farley in Numbers
Reported by Harderfaster

Pure Andy Farley on the 20th November is the pinnacle of the “20 Years Of Andy Farley Tour” and is eagerly anticipated by many of Farley’s fans. As the event is a little different from the norm, we thought we’d do a different style of interview. With this in mind, we caught up with Andy to talk figures. If you like Andy Farley and if you like trivia, you’ll love this!
42,867
This is the number of miles (approximately, it has to be said) Andy travelled in 2009 in the course of his work as a DJ. That’s almost the same distance as travelling to the moon. And back.
20
Is the number of years Andy has been a mixing DJ. In actual fact he also played a few Soul and R&B sets in 1986 & 1987.
4000 - ish
Is the number of sets Andy has played in 20 years. From small intimate dance floors to the biggest hard-dance events the world over, Andy has pretty much done them all. When asked which has been is favourite set yet he struggles to find one . . . “Tin Tins in Birmingham definitely along with Trade, Dance Valley & HQ in Holland, Sundissential at Pulse, Storm, Frantic at Camden Palace, Naughty But Nice in Hereford, Insomniacz, The Monastery in Torquay, early years of Subway City in Birmingham, Hard South in Brighton, Aberwryswyth, Colchester & Keele Universities Party Proactive, Tidy & Atomik Weekenders, any of my gigs in Ireland, Tidy at Es Paradis, Ibiza, Code in Tokyo, Enchanted Forest in Adelaide, Frantic in Sydney & Melbourne, Base in Christchurch, WEMF in Toronto, Club 330 in Durban, and tours of Chile & Taiwan!”
134
Is the number of tracks Andy has produced. 18 of them are unreleased. His first ever release, “Concentrate”, is on “Farley Time – A History Of Hard House”. This number doesn’t include the 37 remixes Andy has done.
1
The number of times Andy has been stuck in a toilet cubical! The embarrassing episode couldn’t have been at a worse time; minutes before his set at a Vicious Circle event in Leeds he decided to use the artists’ toilet, only to find that when the door closed behind him there was no mechanism to unlock the catch. No amount of banging on the door (lets face it, trying to attract attention by banging anything in a hard-house club ‘aint going to work) and it was only when a search party was mustered to find the errant Farley was his plight realised.
5
is the number of hours Andy spends at the gym each week. For the last couple of years he has been on an intense fitness program (and it shows!). His personal trainer is non-other than Paul Glazby.
18
Five a day? Continuing the health theme for a moment, Andy eats 12 veg and 6 pieces of fruit each day,
9
is the number of hours of Andy’s longest set. The marathon was for Xstatic at Birminghams quirky Custard Factory and featured a variety of back-2-backs with the likes of Steve Thomas, JP & Jukesy, Pete Wardman, Jimmy Dean, Paul Maddox, and techno DJ JMF.
17
is the number of Tidy Weekenders Andy has played at. 14 Prestatyn Weekenders, both Tidy Summer Camps and one of the Blackpool New Years Eve weekenders. He missed one Prestatyn weekender as he was touring Australia at the time.
50,106
Approximately the number of vinyl records in Andy Farley’s library. The library is amazing to see, and Andy often goes through it to pull out all but forgotten gems for his sets. Now, we are no mathematicians here but we reckon if you place each record flat down next to each other in a line, that line would stretch for over nine miles! No, we couldn’t quite believe it either, but its true. 1 mile = 63 360 inches. Vinyl records as a rule are 12 inches.
5589
Is the number of people who follow Andy Farley on Facebook. When Andy started DJing the Internet was futuristic technology. Amazing to think that if you wanted to buy a record or track you actually had to walk into a shop or have it sent via mail-order. In 2009 33% of music sales in the USA was through downloads. The Internet makes it much easier to distribute music and undoubtedly is the reason so few tracks are released on vinyl these days. Andy tells us “you can’t beat a set played purely from vinyl, the sound seems much purer, fuller”
5000
Andy has maxed out the number of friends he is allowed on Facebook. It seams the worlds favourite social networking site hadn’t anticipated that someone would actually have 5000 friends.
30
The number of record bags Andy has gone through in his career.
8
Is the number of times Andy has played at Trade events. A young Andy Farley caught the attention of legendary Trade resident Tony De Vit during a DJ competition in Birmingham, and became resident at The Nightingale as a result. Andy was as much a clubber as a DJ at Trade; at Trade’s final event at Turnmills he was spotted on the dance floor, along with other off duty hard-dance DJs such as Cally Gage, Andy Whitby, BK, JP (as in JP & Jukesy) and Superfast Oz.
1966
Andy was born on 7th April 1966. Born on the same day was Michaela Strachan (the “her” in ITV’s Hitman & Her show, a dance music program). Other famous people born on 7th April (although not the same year) include actor Jackie Chan (1954) and Russell Crowe (1964).
32
Is the number of tracks on Farley Time – The Future of Hard House. Tracks include “Bigger And Better” by F1 (F1 is Paul King), the uplifting “Factor Six” by Tomcat & Ambre Solaire and new Andy Farley tracks including “Reignited”, “On The Air” and “Slaaag!” – if this is the future of hard-house then we cant wait!
60
is the number of times Andy has played at Camden Palais / Koko. As a resident for Frantic he played pretty much every event between 2000 and 2003, plus other events such as Peach, Heat & Sunnyside Up.
13
Is the number of Australian tours Andy has done. It’s like going home for Andy - he was actually born in Brisbane. A number of big name DJs have emigrated to Australia, namely Steve Hill and Tara Reynolds.
172
Is the fastest BPM Andy has played at. He tells us this is a regular occurrence for him when he plays in Adelaide . . . Wonder what they are on?
9
The most number of sets played in one weekend - Easter 2002. “One on Thursday night, one on Friday, six without a break from 230am on Sunday morning through to 6 Monday morning, and one Monday night. I was tad knackered afterwards! I used to average 4-6 sets most weekends when hard house was at it’s peak 2000-2003”.
30
Roughly the number of headsets Andy has gone through in 20 years. “I prefer Technics RP1210 and have used them for the past ten years. I always carry two pairs around with me in case of any mishaps, like the time I played at Crash (now Union), I plugged in my brand new pair of headphones to mix in my first tune, caught my foot on the wire which bent the jackplug back and promptly knackered the headphones. Thankfully had a spare pair in the car. The current two pairs I use have lasted me over four years, and I also have two pairs for mixing at home”.
6
Is the number of hours Andy will be playing, non stop, no back to backs, at Pure Andy Farley. “I can’t wait! I love playing longer sets as it gives you time to really build things up nicely”.
7
Is the number of cars Andy has owned. That’s in addition to the two Lambrettas he had during his years as a Mod.
24
The longest Andy has ever slept for. “After a week on scout camp when I was 12, I was out for the count as soon as I got home. I’m just not made to sleep in a tent ha ha”
48
the longest number of hours without sleep. “ I was on a tour of South Africa. Straight out to a party when we got there, then sunbathe all day then DJ’d the following night and up all day at an after party. I think I eventually took myself back to the hotel in the evening having passed out on my back in the garden of the villa we were at!”
1976
The number of different flyers with Andy Farley’s name on them as catalogued and stored by his proud parents.
Well, we promised you some Farley Trivia, and now you have it!
