The Gallery wouldn't be The Gallery without Tall Paul

Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 26-04-10 07:51

April 30th sees one of the UK’s leading and longest serving weekly club nights The Gallery turn fifteen - a landmark achievement by any standard but even more so considering the club continues to pack them in, week in, week out at its new home Ministry Of Sound. Starting life at their father’s club Turnmills, The Gallery was the brainchild of brothers ‘Tall’ Paul and Danny Newman. An ever-present force in dance music, Paul remains one of the most popular regulars at The Gallery. Whether it be with chart topping hits such as Camisra – Let me Show You or headlining pretty much every big club the world over, Paul will be bringing those years of experience and tunes to the 15th Birthday party and the result will be a typical Tall Paul main room Gallery set, one not to be missed! HarderFaster catch up with him ahead of the event.

Hi Paul! How are you? What have you been up to today?

Pretty boring stuff, I woke up this morning with two punctures on my car, I’ve been fixing that all morning, not very rock n roll but happens to us all!

The Gallery 15th Birthday is coming up, when you first started did you think you’d still be at it 15 years later?

No, not a chance, I thought I’m going to get a good 5 years out of this, and then onwards and upwards. It started off a bit slow, then gradually built up to quite a successful night. I still think it's the format of people that have come and gone, we must have had four or five cycles of people coming and going and moving on and new people get introduced to it all the time. It's still appealing, so the boys have done a great job.

What has been the key to its success?

I just touched on it there really, the behind the team guide, the people that are booking the talent, doing the flyers, doing the promotions you know, trying to come up with new ideas, and keep it as interesting as possible so people have a good reason to come down, that side of it is very very difficult and its really down to those guys.

How important do you think it has been for the scene here in London over the years? (and why?)

I think it’s been great, we have been going 15 years now, have done a lot of advertising, so people who are into this sort of music know or should know what’s been happening in London over the past 15 years. As far as we’re concerned when we started it every sort of main city had its night you could refer too with your Creams, Gatecrashers and Godskitchens you know, and I think, it took a while, because running such a big place there’s lots going on, but for a Friday night I don’t think there is much competition really.

What have you got planned for your set?

We’ve just compiled the album that’s coming out soon, so I have been going through some really old stuff, dusted off some records which I’m going to bring down and just see how it goes. I’ll make sure I know where everything is and go with the flow really!

The line-up on the night is the same as The Gallery’s very first birthday! What can you remember that night? Any funny stories stick out?

If I remember rightly, is was my birthday too. Well it's my birthday in May, and I sort of made the excuse to bring it forward, so everyone would come down, meaning no excuses from the lads! I wasn’t really too relaxed if I remember, it was a bit of a big deal as we had been building up to that day for quite some time and I wanted to make sure it went right. Everyone was happy, and everything went well, so it was a good birthday but a bit of a tense one.

You’ve mixed a CD for The Gallery’s 15 Years Album – how did you go about selecting the tracklist?

Just whittling them down from about 50 that have been playing over the years, seeing which ones were available, which ones we could get, and which ones would represent what we had done down there. It took a while tagging and getting the right records, but its pretty good representative of what we have been doing.

Is it a true reflection of what we can expect to hear from one of your Gallery sets?

Yeah I would say so, pretty much every record that’s in there has had its moment and been a big Gallery tune at the time. Obviously there are a few on there that we didn’t manage to get but I think you’ll find the bulk of it on there.

Do you have any festival plans this summer?

Yeah, I’m obviously going to be involved in South West Four at Clapham Common and Global Gathering on the Friday as well.

What producers are doing it for you at the moment?

To be honest, I have been getting loads of music, and I haven’t seen any new producers pop up more than once. There are a couple of bits I was going through this morning – a track by Tim Burgess that was good!

You have travelled to some of the most amazing locations in the world, how do the crowds compare to the London masses?

Comparing it to The Gallery is always a bit tricky, because of the length of time the club night goes on too. Sometimes it will go on till 7 O' Clock in the morning, so it almost works in three stages with us, you get the sort of early guys that come in and get involved, then you get the sort of people who come in after two who have possibly been somewhere else or a late pub and then there is the hardcore people who will be there till the end. When you're in other places around the world, you don’t really get that, its almost one event rather than three individual ones in one night. The crowds pretty much react to the same records in the same way, but I think our night is a bit more of a marathon night.

What’s your top tip for getting money out of dodgy promoters?

Haha, good question, and if I knew the answer to that I'd be a DJ agent! It would be nice to have a good agent behind you that is well respected, that isn’t a stick up merchant, that people want to work with. If you don’t know the promoter and it’s a new night and you're not sure good luck!

For any new budding DJ’s what words of wisdom would you give them?

Make as much music as you can!

What music do you listen to in your down time?

It can be anything, I just jump on iTunes, throw a random album on it, it can be very random.

Finish this sentence "The Gallery wouldn’t be The Gallery without . . ."?

. . . the right venue and the right people!

What else have you got coming up this year?

Just doing the DJing, keeping it a bit more homeward bound now, not so much doing the travelling, just working with the guys, and making sure Fridays are going in the right direction.
