Ice Cream, Vodka and Hard NRG - All Hail Proteus
Reported by Jimmy Dean
/
Submitted 14-04-10 16:14
Without doubt one of the true larger than life characters in the world of Hard Dance, Proteus provides an excess of energy and exuberance in his stage shows rarely equalled. An absolute gent (if a little dangerous when vodka's involved - Ed) in real life HarderFaster gets the low down on the life and loves of one of Finland's finest exports.
Hi Harri! How has 2010 been for you so far?
2010 has been the most busiest "start of the year" so far for me. I'm celebrating my 15th career anniversary this year and I had 5 hour DJ set plus 1 hour full “Proteus band live set” at my career party here in Finland in start of January. It was amazing but hard hard work ha ha! Since that I have been lucky to tour already few times in UK, Russian, Poland, Sweden and Holland. In Eastern weekend I'm playing at huge ID&T's Trance Energy festival in Holland and that's definitely land mark in my career.
Also I have been writing my second artist album at my studio and been organizing my own events in Helsinki. I started to organize underground squad parties again with my SADE event brand and it's been great . . . like when I was young in nineties. This year I also do industrial and metal events under names Graveyard Party and Torture Torstai.
How did the name Proteus come about?
It's not very exciting story unfortunately but I used to play lot of role playing games when I was young like AD&D, Cyberpunk and Middle Earth. Those days there were lot of different game magazines and one those was called Proteus. Then when I had my first DJ gig in 1995 I had to quickly invent an artist name and suddenly I remembered the magazine so I chose the name Proteus. I have been very happy with the name because it reflects my dark and strong music style very well . . . I hope ha ha!
Your homeland is Finland, which means you travel a lot for your gigs in England. What is it you love the most about coming to the UK to DJ?
The scene I love most; pure hard dance and hard nrg, has born in UK and is definitely the most strongest in UK comparing to other countries. It was always my biggest dream in nineties to have chance to play in UK at same events with my musical heroes; Lab-4, Captain Tinrib, Karim, Mark EG, Mishka, Choci, Baby Doc, Nu Energy guys, Max Alien Trax, Rubec, Chris Liberator, Andy Farley to name few and it's amazing how the dream came true! You guys rock and the UK crowd loves the hard music, English people have the hard dance in their blood.
Also half of my best friends are living in UK so every time it's like coming home when I visit your country.
How do you see Hard House? And where do you see clubland in two years time?
I see Hard House still going very strong even Hardstyle has conquered the world during few
years. Here in Finland Hard House is coming back strongly which is great sign and when I was in Poland about two months ago Hard House was coming strong there too, this is great because new young people are finding the Hard House sound and that's really important. For me, I like both Hard House and Hardstyle and I would like to see the both genres going hand in hand together, but because the sounds between them are so different it's bit unlikely. In two years time I guess there will be more genre orientated parties like they have in Holland; pure Hardstyle or pure Hard House only. I hope it won’t get that way in other countries as well.
Storm 10th Birthday - Such a huge line up! Apart from playing b2b with Mark EG, what or who are you looking forward to the most at the event?
Yeah It's the biggest line up I ever saw in Hard House definitely! Absolutely amazing! There are so many I'm looking forward to see and so many friends, but definitely Karim, Kevin Energy, Rodi Style, Alex, M-Zone and Defective Audio I don’t want to miss!
Tell us more about FINRG and your involvement with it?
FINRG is north Europe's biggest Hard Dance and Freeform artist collective. It was created in 2000/2001 by my good friends Freeform band called Carbon Based. I join them as their artist and we have done several releases and events together. I represent FINRG on my tours as FINRG artist and I play lot of our music at my dj sets. Nowadays the FINRG company is run by Carbon Based, DJ Rx and DJ Swoosh together. We released new side label called Hybridize about year ago for new artists to support fresh and young talents.
Which event have you played in the UK that has stuck in your mind the most and why?
Wow this is difficult question, all of them ha ha ha! I have to say my first gig at Logic at the Fridge in 2000, it's now ten years ago, time goes fast. It was the gig that changed my life, I have huge respect to Rubec, Nadya and David from Logic and if you guys read this I miss you a lot!
Also my first gig at main stage at Brixton Academy HHA I will never forget!! It was end of 2003 or just in the start of 2004. I was very nervous before the gig!
Where and when did you start DJing and what made you decide it was what you wanted to do?
I had my first DJ gig here in Finland on 1995 and those days I played psychedelic trance. I collected all kind of styles from techno to early hardcore and rave but when early psytrance really hit the surface on that year here in Finland I really liked the energy and dark vibe of it. I played psytrance few years and stopped it because most of the psy DJ's here played from DAT tape or mini disc. DAT and mini disc were popular way to play because that was the fastest way to get new psy songs before other DJ's. Those days normal releases and promos were released on vinyl. There was lot of competition between DJ's and I hated it. I wanted to play vinyl so I changed my style to harder.
The reason why I wanted to start DJing was when I went to my first rave parties and saw DJ's playing. I already had collected lot of records so I was thinking that I want to do that too and now we are here.
If you were stranded on a desert island? What five things would you take with you?
They would be: 1. My lovely fiancee Venla, 2. My puppy dog Tassu, 3. Million litres of Vodka, 4. My guitar, 5. A billion litres of ice cream.
Beer from Finland, or beer from England?
Finnish and English lagers are very similar. I also like Guiness, so maybe then England takes the number one position because we don't have good dark beer here.
Tell us more about the club nights you run in your home country?
My oldest club concept is called SADE which is now this year 12 years old. Sade is all about different styles of hard dance including everything from psy trance to speedcore. I started it as underground squad party and changed it proper club night in 2000. Now I started do it as squad party again so nowadays Sade is both commercial and underground depending on the venue I use. Also I do big industrial cross over event called Graveyard Party where I have mostly bands playing but also DJ's. GP happens about once or two times per year. Last year I started a new monthly club night called Torture Torstai which was everything from punk to hardcore. Torture Torstai is now having "siesta" because there is not enough time at the moment to do it properly every month.
In the past 2000-2003 I have also done pure fetish underground events called Tuska and pure industrial club night called Inferno. One Finnish rock restaurant chain took my Inferno name after that which was bit irritating ha ha!!
What do you miss the most about Finland when you are not there?
I definitely miss my home Boss Venla and my little girl; puppy dog Tassu. Venla is very busy with her own work as she is professional horse/rider trainer. We don't see each other very often even we have own apartment together. I'm building my own soundproof studio to our apartment which helps a little bit. Sometimes it's maybe good that you don't see each other too often, it can keep the relationship fresh all the time ha ha! We have been together now for 6 years.
Are you the Master or the Servant?
I'm definitely the servant ha ha!!! Oh god I don't know! We're both frisky and I am the master
or servant depending on how our boss Chloe from UDJs management orders us ha ha!!
What was your musical taste like when you were younger and first discovered music? Is it any different to now?
My teenage roots are in the industrial and metal bands like; Ministry, Front 242, KMFDM, Metallica, Laibach but also in the old synthesizer music like Jarre, Krafwerk and Vangelis. This was in late eighties. When I was really young my dad used to play lot of different music at our home. He had huge record collection everything from Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen to Bob Marley so I got used to different music. I learned to like all this stuff and now for example I have all the Bruce Springsteen albums collected. I still like all that music and some people could say I'm crazy but I have put all my money during my life to records; the collection is priceless. I have "crazy rule" in my life that everything I like that I hear I have to get even what ever artist or genre it would be. That's why I have at my home at least 15 thousand vinyls and thousands and thousands of cds everything from country to ambient to rock to techno to hard dance to hardcore to metal and to black metal and beyond ha ha ha! I love all the music! Music is the greatest thing in whole world.

♥ STORM ♥
Ten years on:
•World’s longest standing monthly Hard Dance club
•Most decorated Hard Dance club in history – three consecutive awards for Best Large Club at Hard Dance Awards and counting!
•Global tours, compilation CDs & much more
•The Very best Atmosphere with the very best people – on the planet.
★ 10 years ago something very special happened that was to change the landscape of dance music forever.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
STORM was born: A hard dance clubnight that would go on to achieve things that no other clubnight had ever achieved.
Over the last ten years, Storm has grown from a small, but dedicated group of Friday night followers to a Saturday night superclub that has spread its seed far and wide in the quest for global domination.
Operating out of a small mining town in Coalville, Storm has grown to become renowned the world over for big sell out crowds, superstar A-list DJs and the one of the best atmospheres of any nightclub in the world.
In ten years there have been many memories – many things that make this a true clubbing institution of the noughties. Residents, carefully selected over the years, have been selected purely on merit and have included artists as diverse as Ingo, Amber D, BK and Andy Farley not forgetting the longest serving Daley & the next generation Jimmy Dean.
Ten years ago there were other hard dance superclubs of a similar reckoning to Storm. Some fizzled out over time, some didn’t survive the recession - some have even recently come back from the dead! No hard dance superclub, other than STORM, has continued uninterrupted for over ten years - putting on a minimum of one event per month for devoted fans of the hard stuff!
So what does the premier Hard House club in the world do to celebrate the big 1-0?
When you’ve been at the top of your game for so long, it makes putting on the big celebratory events that little bit harder.
We knew it would have to be big, something that would raise eyebrows and set tongues wagging across the clubbing world. We knew it would have to boast a huge headliner – feature a world-beating act that hasn’t appeared on our lineups for a long time....
With that in mind, STORM is delighted to announce the long-awaited return of THE TIDY BOYS to The Emporium.
Commenting on the return of the Tidy Boys, Jimmy Dean - promoter of Storm - said: “12 months ago I made the executive decision to cancel the Tidy Boys from the Storm NYE line up at very short notice due to a particularly set of circumstances at the time which were of no making of the Tidy Boys.
“I also at the time became a little frustrated and got drawn into message-board dialogue where I communicated confidential information which I now realize was unprofessional on my part and which I now greatly regret. To that end I would like to apologise to Andy and Amo for the unfortunate situation that occurred and look forward to re-establishing our working and personal relationship with the boys.
“To kick this off, I am very excited to announce that the Tidy Boys will be returning to their spiritual home to headline the once in a lifetime experience … Storms 10th Birthday.”★
