The A.T.A.R.I. Project hits London: interview with Neutrino and Devine Machine

Reported by Tara / Submitted 13-05-09 19:55

Something new and exceedingly curious is about to explode onto the London club scene. Saffas Dino ‘Neutrino’ Ciancamerla, Stephan ‘Devine Machine’ Hoffman and Tobie Allan launch the A.T.A.R.I. Project on Friday 22 May at the Rhythm Factory. We couldn’t wait until then to find out whether ‘A.T.A.R.I.’ really stands for ‘Association of Trance Aliens Representing Intelligence’…

Why the name A.T.A.R.I. Project? What’s the concept behind it?

Neutrino: Firstly let me tell you who are involved in the project. There’s myself Dino aka Neutrino, Stephan Hoffman aka Devine Machine and Tobie Allen aka Tobie Allen.
To be honest we don’t really know what A.T.A.R.I stands for. We had a message sent to us a while back instructing us to run some phat and funky psychedelic parties using this name and to have as much of an hilariously crazy time as we can while we do it. Some say A.T.A.R.I stands for Association of Trance Aliens Representing Intelligence. But all we know is that we have been inspired by this unknown group to put on these events... and I think at our launch party you will get a good idea of just how inspired we have been — wherever the inspiration may have come from.

When did you first get into making music?

Neutrino: I used to dabble with silly programs like Dance E Jay etc when I was about 16 and then slowly progressed and progressed. I had a long break and have only really got back into things now. In fact I’ve just started work on my debut album with help from A.T.A.R.I Co-owner Stephan Hoffman AKA Devine Machine...he’s an absolute master engineer.

Stephan: I started producing in 2000 and have been dedicating most of my time to it since then. I can honestly say that it’s my biggest passion in life, and I also have another problem. I’m addicted to music technology and always try and keep up to the fast moving evolution in the industry. I was also employed at one of Europe’s top music technology distributors where I was demonstrating the latest recording studio software and hardware to clients.
I kitted out Armin van Buuren with his Access Virus TI, sorted out Eric Prydz with some gear, as well as many more famous artists. Currently I’m working on many projects for artists and labels, from psychedelic to more clubbier material. My artist album as Devine Machine is also nearing completion, so keep an eye out for that.

And promoting parties?

Neutrino: When I first moved to London as a budding DJ four years go I realised promoting was the best way to get myself into the scene. I started off in the hard dance/trance scene but my passion has always been on the psychedelic side of things. When Tobie Allen approached me to take over one of his hard dance promotions I thought this was the perfect opportunity to start something new, instead focusing on the psy trance scene. During some of our intense brainstorming sessions we received the aforementioned message from an anonymous source and the A.T.A.R.I Project was born.

Stephan: Geez where do I start — haha. I have many years of promotion experience behind me. As you know we are South African. I have been promoting my own club nights and big scale international dance music concerts since 1999. In Cape Town I was the original promoter for the city’s longest running hard dance club. I also did many other events at various clubs around the city.
I played a major role in bringing out many of the world’s biggest dance music artists for concerts to South Africa and had the pleasure of performing with all of them, in the process building up an impressive network of industry contacts. I started toying with some small parties I did in London in 2008, just hosting my own room with other promoters, but nothing too serious.
As we all know each other from back home, it was a logical step to team up for A.T.A.R.I
I’m also part of Vortex Psychedelic Trance adventures, South Africa’s biggest and longest running psy trance organization. Since I’m based in the UK now, I’m the official rep for the brand here.

You’re launching your first London event next Friday. What brought you to London and why are you up for doing events here?

Neutrino: London is a hive, buzzing with just about every subgenre under the sun. I’ve always been drawn to it for that reason. Any type of music 24/7 365 or there about. Anyone who is really into music has got to love it!!!
The launch of our new brand next week will mark the beginning of huge things to come. But we believe it’s important in the London scene and especially in the psy trance scene, to start off humble, honest and bursting with quality. And that’s what we have planned for this event. We have put our hearts and souls into making this event the best launch party possible and I think the you will certainly agree when you see the effort that has been put into aspects like the production and line up.

You’ve put together a wicked line-up for A.T.A.R.I. , please run us through it…

Neutrino: Ya we are very pleased with the line up. We picked the line up not by who was selling the most tickets at the time but who we as DJs, producers and promoters had much respect for in the scene. The PharPsyde Records Crew have been around for ages and are a bunch of friendly and very real people and are a great pleasure to work with.

I don’t think I need to say much about OOOD as their reputation precedes themselves. They are amazingly talented producers as well as one of the most respected live acts in the psy trance scene world wide. Usually you will see three or more of them on stage at any one time, doing a full on live performance drums and all.

Prozak and Sati are two people I have much respect for as they aided my entry into the psy trance scene, offering me any advice I need and booking me for their Cohesion and Logic events. Needless to say their DJ skills are second to none.

Then we have Andy from Wonky Disco aka Mr Strangelove. Again much much respect to this guy for what he has done with the Wonky Disco brand. Absolutely incredible parties that we at A.T.A.R.I Project definitely look up to.

Psytonic, El Blada and Retox are friends of ours who also have a great passion for the music and are edging to get into the scene.

And last but not least of course you have the A.T.A.R.I residents Devine Machine and myself Neutrino.

What are your top 10 tracks for getting the party moving right now?

Neutrino:
Earthling — ‘Beans of Light’
Ace Venutra — ‘The Light’
Phax Swing — ‘King’
Time in Motion — ‘Back Together’
Liquid Soul — ‘Out of the Blue’

Stephan:
Chromatone — ‘eL eS Deep’
Avalon — ‘Out There’
Ital — ‘Hyper Freq’
AtomiCulture — ‘Active Redio’
Devine Machine & Neutrino — ‘Twelve Systems’

How did you get into DJ’ing? What do you hope to gain from it?

Neutrino: Djing is where it all started for me and together with production is where my heart lies. As a clubber back at Gallery in Cape Town I used to think to myself, “the only possible thing that could feel more amazing than being down here dancing, is being up there making people dance.” Thats all I needed. Eventually I managed to get some decks once moving to Europe many years later and I now feel very privileged and grateful to be in the position to give people a good time and the dance floor. Festivals are next on the cards and nothing would make me happier than playing main stage at Boom Festival. Not long now I hope.

Stephan: I have been into electronic dance music since 1995. The Prodigy’s ‘Music for a Jilted Generation’, Carl Cox’s ‘F.A.C.T.’, Early releases from Blue Room, Matsuri, Transient, Eve Records, as well as some of the first Trancemaster compilations on Vision Soundcarriers is what sparked my passion for electronic dance music. I have been DJ’ing in clubs and at events since 1996 and held residencies and regular guest appearances at most of the super clubs and big dance music events in South Africa. I have been fortunate enough to share billboards with many of the world’s biggest electronic dance music artists. I’m a full time DJ and producer and performing at all the major dance festivals around the world is my goal.

When you’re not DJ’iing, what are you doing?

Neutrino: My day job is personal training, which gives me plenty time to produce, Tobie promotes full-time and also works for a paintball company, and Stephan produces and does production lessons in his studio full-time, so if you there are any budding producers out there get in touch as he really is a master no matter what style you are looking to make.

Stephan: We have some other really interesting projects and collaborations going on at the moment. We have just launched a radio show called Psychedelic Sessions.

Stephan: Well as Dino Said I’m a full time producer. I also have two other full-time projects which keep me very busy. I’m the owner of Psychedelic Sessions and Euphoric Sessions, South Africa’s high profile international electronic dance music radio shows.

Euphoric Sessions is done by myself & Pierre Pienaar (Head of Nukleuz Records Green Trance Imprint). The show enjoys a top rating on Trance.nu, the world’s biggest online trance and progressive community.

Psychedelic Sessions is a collaboration between South Africa’s biggest psychedelic trance brands. The show is hosted by myself Devine Machine (Vortex Productions & A.T.A.R.I. Project) and Regan Tacon label owner of Nano Records, South Africa’s premier and world famous psychedelic trance record label. Psychedelic Sessions will be a showcase for the latest news and releases coming from the Nano Recrods stable as well as feature the best that the world of psychedelic and progressive trance has to offer including global events listings, charts, etc. The show will be broad casted on many of the world’s leading industry stations during the first week of every month.

You’re originally from SA. How’s the scene different there and how have you had to adjust to the UK psy trance world?

Neutrino: Well you really can’t compare, I mean the SA scene has the support of the great weather so there is at least one outdoor event every weekend in the summer. The venues are unbelievable and there is always some form of water to swim in, usually within hearing distance of the dance floor. They are just incredible. Having said that, the London scene is very special in its own way. So many up for it clubbers really make it worthwhile DJ’ing and throwing parties. Most promoters are very friendly and willing to help out newer promotions.

Who are your favourite DJs and producers and why?

Neutrino: In the past I would have said the likes of Astrix, his ‘Eye to Eye’ album is still my favorite album of all time and I think is one of the best albums every to be released to the psy trance market. Sadly these days a lot of the DJs are leaning toward the clubbier sound as that seems to be where the money is. I do wish they would keep releasing the underground stuff on the side as well though. I’m loving Headroom, Ace Ventura, Earthling, Quantize, Brisker and Magitman, DNox & Beckers — the list could go on forever. I just love how the scene is constantly changing with the merging of styles and flavours.

Stephan: There are so many. I’m also into the progressive sounds big time, so Neelix, Freq, Day Din, Swing King and all the above mentioned artists go for me too. However it must be said that the South African psy artists are really doing extremely well. Headroom, Protoculture, Commercial Hippies, Hydraglyph, Broken Toy and Hydrophonic, to name a few. More artists that are really doing the damage are Predators, Jirah and my tip for the top Chromatone.

What have been the highlights of your time in dance music?

Neutrino: Playing at Ministry of Sound has to be one of them, and the first time I played one of my own tracks out was also a very special feeling. Recently I played main stage at the Fridge for Logic which was also a wonderful experience.

Stephan: Well in 13 years I have owned my own record shop, hosted my own successful clubbing events, have my own studio, performed with nearly every major dance act in the industry including Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto and Carl Cox and worked with and performed for some of the biggest industry brands like Gatecrasher, Godkitchen, Slinky, Ministry of Sound, Blue Room, Vortex, Nano Records, etc. Each week I perform to thousands of listeners around the world via my successful radio shows that are being hosted in Europe, Africa, Australia and America. These are some of the things that I’m proud of the most. Not too bad for someone who’s Mom used to cut the plugs of his turntables while trying to record DJ demos haha!

Where would you like to take A.T.A.R.I. in 5 years time?

Neuturino: That’s easy. I want to be doing festivals. Most likely abroad but we’ll have see what happens. With regards to the club events I think we are still testing the water, but our main focus will always be quality over quantity
.
The festival season is almost amongst us — what’s your most important piece of equipment to take to a festival?

Neutrino: Well if you are talking about for performing then of course it would have to be my beloved Mac Book Pro. Other than that the thing I love about festivals is that you don’t need anything! Just a tent and a pair of shorts and that’s the way it should be. Weather permitting of course.

Stephan: Laptop & Novation Nocturn. Sunscreen and headache tablets

Are you hoping to get out and about to any festivals?

Neutrino: Ya you will definitely see the A.T.A.R.I crew at WaveForm Festival this year, and myself and all my friends are going over to Rome for Sonica, which I’m sure is going to be amazing. Especially the weather. Would love to get to Glade too if possible, it looks massive!

Stephan: Glade Festival!

Finally, what’s next on the horizon for A.T.A.R.I.?

Neutrino: We will be strengthening the brand over the summer by representing our brand at other promotions and events and then start again with the club events after the festival season as come to a close.

Thanks guys! See you next Friday!
