Sam Townend Says Goodbye!

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 20-08-08 21:05

Tidy are arguably one of the biggest hard dance brands in the world, with continuing success with the record label, another season in Ibiza and the 15th Weekender upcoming, things look, well, tidy. Indeed, since Sam Townend joined Tidy as Head Of Music there have been many changes, but nothing like the change in direction now as they leave vinyl behind forever.

Taking them forward is the brand new Tidy Music Library series issued via download at the usual locations but also, maybe more importantly, available via CD at stockists like HMV; an important step to seeing credible dance music in the stores again. To investigate further we went to find out a bit more direct from Sam himself.

With the release of the Tidy Music Library issued monthly, how does it feel to be saying goodbye and leaving vinyl behind for good?

It’s a mixed emotion to be honest, the music industry is changing so quickly at the moment it’s hard to keep tabs on it some times! On one hand I’m excited about the future and the new concept in which we are delivering the music to the masses, it’s always a good buzz when you are pushing things forward and trying new concepts, but on the other hand I’m gutted as vinyl will always have a special place in my heart, the first ever record I bought was a Tidy record ironically and nothing beats the feeling of going record shopping and getting back home with a bag full of promos! Everything has a life cycle though and I guess it was just that time for the vinyl to move aside!

How long did the whole decision to stop making vinyl take and what prompted or rather moved it to the fore it in the first place?

With the monthly vinyl releases it was just becoming a major effort for little return, so something had to change. For a good few months before we finally made the switch I was speaking with people about different ideas and ways we could continue to release physical singles and the Music Library was a result of all the different input and ideas that came up. Another reason for making the decision against vinyl was the fact I was turning up to play at more and more clubs that just had CDJs set up with no vinyl decks even plugged in and if that isn’t a sign of the times I don’t know what is!

You’ve got sample packs included in the first two issue of the Tidy Music Library, why have you chosen to include these producer tools?

There are so many people able to produce music these days, but there hasn’t really been any regular outlet for producers to get hold of samples and tools tailored towards hard dance. I want people to start making more music so providing producers with high quality samples is the obvious way to encourage this. With the Music Library’s we want have as much appeal as possible, so whether you’re a DJ, producer or just a fan of the music, there is some thing for everyone on each Issue.

Will these become a regular feature and what happens if someone uses these packs to produce a hit song, will Tidy be looking for royalties for example?

There will be some form of sample pack or producer aid on every Issue. 99% of all dance music uses samples so this is just a way of providing good quality tools for the trade! If someone was to do a direct bootleg of a Tidy track and try and release it as their own, then yes, you can expect a phone call from us!

Issue One featured Kym Ayres’ track Take It Easy with key HarderFaster member Stace on vocals. The press release calls her a rising hard dance starlet, what are your thoughts on this precocious talent?

She’s got talent and I have been impressed with her song writing skills so far. There are a couple more releases lined up through the label featuring her so she’s definitely one to watch for the future! More people should take a leaf from her book and start writing their own lyrics!!

There are quite a few tracks included with each release plus a minimix as well. However now people are used to buying exactly the track they want from a download store, what do you think will attract people to buy these packs?

The Minimix and Sample packs are exclusive to the CD release and wont be released digitally, and also with the Music Library’s you are actually buying a collectable physical thing rather than just a file on your computer, With MP3’s you lose the whole sense of actually owning something and I think its important to keep the collectability that vinyl had going in some way, shape or form!

How do you think these packs will contribute to the future of the scene and DJs / producers in general?

The CDs are a positive move, they offer value for money and give people more than just your standard two or three tracks you where limited to with vinyl. This way DJs get a hell of a lot more choice of material to play on the release and it may also encourage DJs to listen to tracks they may have overlooked in the past. With the producers they still get their music released in physical format and also onto the shelves in the high street which is still important when releasing records. This all makes the Music Library a bit more exclusive than just a file download on the internet. Think of the Tidy Music Library as a kind of quality control where only the best music around makes it onto each issue! We have received massive support from HMV and the major retail chains with the project so this will start to see the return of regular hard dance singles released to the masses!

It’s been almost a year since we last saw you on the pages on HarderFaster (before Tidy With A Twist). What other collaborations has Tidy been mixed up with since then and do you think these pair ups are important to the scene and clubbers?

Probably the main one has been us teaming up with Chic Ibiza. These guys run a whole host of massive events around the world and we are starting to work with them on the Weekenders and events in Ibiza. Their input will be invaluable as we look to expand and add to the Weekender experience over the next couple of years! As with us finishing the vinyl and starting the Monthly CD, things have to change and evolve to move with the times, otherwise your going to get left behind!

Do you think your year and a half’s experience at Tidy has changed your outlook on the scene and why?

Yeah, I have realised that the music industry is full of blaggers, haha! Jokes aside, its definitely educated me in the way everything works within the Industry and from where I’m stood I think the scene is definitely becoming more healthy at the moment with more and more wicked parties and music kicking about than there has been for a long time! Viva La Hard Dance.

It’s nearly time for the Tidy Weekender. What do you think has been some of the most important changes or additions put in place for this event?

We have gone for a much more diverse line up on this event, we want to open the gates to lovers of all harder edged music, so weather it be hard dance, NRG, psy trance, techno or hardcore, there is something for everyone over the course of the weekend! There are some other special additions to the event but I can’t let the cat out of the bag just yet so your going to have to just come down and see what they are for yourself!

Why should someone who’s maybe not been in a while come to this event?

Treat every weekender as though it’s your last and your guaranteed to have a good time!

What key stars will be appearing over the course of the weekend?

We have one of the biggest line ups seen at a weekender for a long time so go to www.tidyweekender.com for the full lowdown on who’s playing and all the info! Of course the act on everyone’s lips is the Tidy DJs though!
