DJ Yoshi spills the beans on Frantic worldwide

Yoshi has long been a favourite of Frantic Sydney and has recently come to join us on this side of the world, leaving behind him the sun, spiders and stomping hard dance fans. But why would someone want to get away from that veritable paradise?
Of course he’s move to the UK and he’s playing Frantic’s 11th Birthday Masquerade at Koko in August, so what better time for me to have a chat with him about his big move, hard dance down under, his label Eyedeal Digital & his involvement with Diablo Traxx.
Hi Yoshi and welcome to London! I don’t think this is your first time here though is it? What’s made you come back?
Thanks, its good to be here. This is actually my sixth visit to the UK. Music, production, great friends and travel has always brought me back to this side of the world. Getting the opportunity to play at wicked events like Frantic’s 11th Birthday Masquerade ball is something I wouldn’t miss for the world.
And how are you finding it here so far?
It has been a shock to the system, definitely a major change in lifestyle. I’m getting used to it now though and really starting to enjoy it.
What style of hard dance do you play?
I play a mix of UK and German hard trance. Very uplifting with some vocals and loads of my own production.
Marty, who runs Frantic Sydney, recently named you as his one to watch. What was your involvement with Frantic Sydney? Are you keeping in touch with the guys over there?
Thanks Marty, the cheque is in the mail! I have been resident with Frantic Australia since day one. I’ve played everything from their club events to the infamous Frantic boat party. I’ve been keeping in touch with all the crew and would love to take this opportunity to send them a shout out.
I’ve heard good things about you playing for Frantic UK before, how does it differ to playing in Australia?
The vibe and atmosphere of the parties are very similar. The only major difference would be in the size of the production and the amount of people that go along. There are just so many more people here so the parties are on a far larger scale.
Which crowd do you think is better, here or in Oz? (And remember who you’re talking to!)
I don’t know that either crowd is better, it really comes down to what each individual party is like. I find that Aussies and Kiwi’s make up a lot of the party scene here anyway and so it’s very similar to being at home, other then as mentioned it’s on a larger scale here.
You’ve been doing some things with Diablo Traxx haven’t you? How did you end up working with Ajay and the boys?
I met Ajay when I landed but I knew Paul from clubbing back home. I had just mentioned to them that I was moving over and we have been doing some work together since.
Fellow Diablo Traxx peeps Helen G & Mike Avery are on the line up for Frantic’s Birthday – have you seen them play before? What do you think of their styles?
They are both really good, I have only seen them a few times but they have smashed it every time. I’m really looking forward to seeing them again at Frantic’s 11th Birthday.
Are you into the production side of things? If so, tell us all about it!
I have been writing music for the last 6 years, with releases on labels like Joyride Music, Addiction Digital, NEC Recordings just to name a few. I have my own label EyeDeal Digital up on www.beatport.com and I’m working on getting it out and about over the next few months. I’m just about to unveil my third release, it’s called Future by Yoshi & Dawn and features a hardcore remix by Cooper. Check it out.
What do you do in your spare time, if you get any?
I love to write music obviously. I also enjoy spending time with my girlfriend, going out with friends and travelling.
You must be excited about Frantic’s Birthday – what would you say to anyone who’s trying to decide whether to come & see you play?
I would say you have to come check it out, the whole night will be off the hook and as for my set I have loads of new tunes that I can’t wait to spin.
Now to dish the dirt…best & worst thing about England?
Best thing would be the opportunity to travel and to further my music. Worst thing would be being away from my family and friends.
Biggest party animal amongst the Diablo Traxx boys?
That would have to be Ajay, but I’m yet to stamp my mark so maybe me!
Best moments when DJing?
Best moment would have to be playing Frantic’s boat party back in Sydney, the atmosphere is something words cannot describe. A close second would have to be playing FFWD Dance Parade in Rotterdam, Holland. 400,000 people, playing off the back of a truck. It was something I will never forget.
Who do you love in the hard dance scene?
For production I would have to say Technikal and MDA & Spherical, their music is right up my alley. Playing it would have to be Phil Reynolds, I have had many a good stomp to Phil and I look forward to many more.
Tell me a secret.
I used to be a happy hardcore DJ, it’s the first sound I got into and Slipmat was my favourite DJ. I still love to get out all my old records and happy hard it.
Thanks for your time Yoshi, I for one will definitely be checking out your set in the Nu Breed room at Frantic’s 11th Birthday Masquerade Ball. Get yourselves down to Koko on Bank Holiday Sunday 24th August if you fancy a piece of the Aussie action!
