Tin Tin out at Maximal
Reported by JC-TAKTIKAL

These days trenchcoats, cowlicks and fighting crime in the name of Belgium with a small dog are out as Oli Cassidy aka DJ Tin Tin (back in the day )and his side kick James Trystan, have united to form one of clublands most formidable underground house duos, Filth&Splendour. Together they have been rocking a succession of London’s leading club nights such as Wax, Issst, Slaang and Maximal.
Ahead of their return to the hallowed mixing desk at The Cross for Maximal, we caught with them to well ask them some random questions and stuff like that, in depth of course, so come now and lets see what happens!
Hi guys, how are you today?
Oli: We’re good, we just got back from watching Die Hard 4.0 and thankfully it was brilliant.
James: It has been a very stressful day, I’ve been munching garlic to get rid of a cold and my girlfriend painted my toe nails while I was sleeping, so Oli has been having a field day taking the piss out of me.
Oli: Too right, you hum of garlic, but the toenails are quite fetching!
Let’s get a little more acquainted. So give the audience a run down on who you are, you know the usual A,S,L etc, spill the beans!
Oli: What do you want to know? A lot of the ‘old skool’ HarderFaster fraternity will know me as Tin Tin, back when I played hard dance. I thought I had given it all up for good, but I joined James in Soho one night to play a house set because I wanted to impress a girl. The girl wasn’t as impressed as James was and we’ve been DJing together ever since. Our sound has developed into a very mixed affair. We play all sorts of house, electro, breaks, techno and all the rest. I’ve got my sights set on playing big festival slots one day so we do like to mix it up a lot. We’re currently both working a lot in the studio, we’ve made around seven tracks already and we’re getting some good label interest too.
James: We’ve been so busy with other stuff we haven’t had time to get in there together yet. We’ll be doing our first one together in early August and there will be plenty more to come after that. I’ve been knocking around the scene as long as Oli has, but mostly stuck to the house bar circuit to begin with. I used to play at outdoor raves before that, but it seems like a long time ago now.
Oli, you used to be musically acquired to the harder end of the spectrum. As we grow older our tastes also mature, is that true and does that mean you like Semolina?
Oli: No, I’ve never liked semolina, and I doubt I ever will, I’ve always been a rice pudding man myself.
Now you both DJ as a duo (obviously), that means you have double the brain power, no? So bearing the facts in mind, how long did it take you to come up with your collective name?
James: Oli came up with it randomly one evening as we were in the car heading to Thirst. He reckons he’d been thinking about it for a while, but I think he just got lucky.
Oli: We both really liked it as it sums up our sound as much as it does the pair of us. We did toy around with the idea of dividing the name into who was Filth and who was Splendour, but we both see it now as an over arching title for both of us and take no ownership over either.
Like chalk and cheese and brie and cranberries they say two opposites attract – where’s your motivation behind the wheels of steel?.
Oli: My motivation comes from everywhere, I love all kinds of music and was happy as a pig in shit at Glastonbury recently (quite literally), but I’m also looking forward to SW4 just as much. We pretty much play what we like behind the decks, but I have a lot of respect for the likes of Fatboy Slim and DJ Yoda, who literally drop whatever they feel like.
James: To be at the top of my game, there is no point in putting in as much effort as we do if we can’t try and be the best at what we do. We always strive to improve and reach as far as we can into the scene. We’ve been playing a lot of great parties, with Maximal, Maximal Underground, Slaang, Issst and so on. We want to keep pushing our boundaries in terms of productions, mixing and promotions.
Who is your all time musical inspiration?
James: My personal favourites would be D. Ramirez, Jim Rivers, Mike Monday, Benz & MD, Jaytech and not forgetting Depeche Mode.
Oli: At the moment, I’m a big fan of Maximo Park, The Killers, The Kaiser Chiefs and for all time legends status, Queen. I recently saw the Chems (Chemical Brothers – Ed) and Daft Punk Live and they blew the top off my kettle too!
Tell us about your current residencies and your next big gigs coming up?
James: Our residencies at the moment are with Maximal, Maximal Underground and R U Dirty? At the Key, the Cross and Thirst bar respectively. Each one brings us a different crowd and different challenges with entertaining them. We love having diverse audiences, bringing them together only to turn them in to club casualties by the end of the night.
Oli: We’ve got Naturalism this weekend, which we are both very excited about. It’s a new twist on an old concept. We are all go to Clapham and get on a Coach with blacked out windows, this takes us to a secret location out in the fields some where. Everyone gets stuck in and we all get the coach back into London again. Awesome. The best part is it is free; you only have to pay for the coach.
James: We also have Maximal Underground next Friday at the Cross with Jamie McHugh, Chris Barratt and Matt Thompson. Plus old hard dance hands, Type 1 playing minimal!
You’ll need to look up our myspace for more up to the date info!
www.myspace.com/filthandsplendour
So give the punters a flavour of your quaver – what can they expect to hear from you on the night?
Oli: Well, we like to think no two sets are the same.
James: We also have some new material to showcase to the masses, which is fresh as a fabreeze factory on quality control day!
Oli: But you can expect plenty of Filth and a dose of Splendour in there!
Apart from Le Musica what’s your favourite past time when you’re not spinnin’ and winnin’?
James: The gym, we’re both addicted to keeping fit and healthy, must be a reaction to our hectic lifestyles, it’s good to keep it all in balance.
Oli: Yup, it’s a bit much otherwise, we’d just never get anything done. If we aren’t DJing or in the gym, we are planning something, producing or catching up with friends. It’s a bit of a full time job at the moment, but that’s only a good thing.
What’s your favourite piece of clothing?
James: I’m loving my new trainers at the moment, the pair of us seem to go through trainers like mad. We get ‘em dirty and then replace them, if anyone would like to sponsor us to wear their trainers then please get in touch through myspace.
Oli: Erm, trainers are important, and good jeans, I’m into hats, belts and funky boxer shorts at the moment, there is only so many times you can wear jeans and a t-shirt.
Do you remember that classic film DropDeadFred?
Oli: Yes, I’ve never had an imaginary friend, but I knew a guy at school who had an imaginary sheep, I’m not sure what he did with it, but it kept him happy enough.
Is Beverly Hills 90210 like the best series ever?
Oli: No.
James: It’s all about the Boosh!
Oli: Why don’t you like my pie!
James: I don’t like pie.
Oli: But it is a good pie…(James and Oli go on for a little too long, so we shut them up!)
Thanks!

+ The Cross smoking Garden now open
The dark eve creeps in suddenly over the hot and humid summer sky, mellow yellows and perfected purples are over shadowed with a white glow as the moon begins to rise.
The nocturnal creatures begin to move through the streets, fixated on the anticipation of what could happen. This is undiluted, unashamed sound of the underground… Welcome one & all the world of Maximal.
On July 20th at 11pm, Maximal Underground returns to its monthly residency at The Cross. Its concept, to bring you the most cutting edge music, djs, producers and promotions from across the country and all under one roof. Three arches of the best House, electro, driving minimal, breaks and tribal melodic grooves brought to you by the leading parties on the scene right now.
This month starring in our main room is the man who began it all at our debut event at The Cross 8 months ago. This hotly tipped young producer has since gone on to remix D.Ramirez, MYNC project, Claude Von Stroke, Tom Pooks, Josh Wink and Meat Katie and solo releases on CR2 and Brique / Kill Rouge… his name is Jamie McHugh.
Alongside the man is question we have our resident young star in the making… Chris Barratt and with releases on ‘Jesus Loved You’, 3 tracks signed to Roger Sanchez’s Stealth Records, remixes on DeepDish’s very own label and a almighty reworking of Josh Winks ‘Higher State of Conciousness’ on Strictly Rhythm Records coming up very soon! Not only this we have our very favourite residents Matt Thompson, Filth & Splendour, and Type 1. Expect a samurai edge to this music cos it aint gonna any sharper.
In the terrace we are proud to be joined by exciting new promotion hailing from the northern quarter… NeverNeverLand. They will be creating an enchanted and twisted discoteque of fiendish electronica from dusk till dawn with BBC Radio One's / Codex's very own Nico De Ceglia alongside Devore’s very own Mitch and resident’s Laura Heath and Dave James.
In our VIP room we have the sexiest night time vixens as our hosts the salacious Sophisticated Dance. These very important people will be pushing the very finest tribal melodic house brought to you by Stefan Housley, Pandora S-K plus guests.
