Tick Tyas Tock - It's Sean Tyas!

Reported by Housechick / Submitted 30-05-07 14:35

Warning – Hot Property. If trance music was a machine Sean Tyas would be the driving engine, pumping out his tracks and remixes like some kind of crazed android. But there’s certainly method behind the madness as he’s become one of the most respected producers out there today, with commercial artists beating a path to his door. Now he’s on his way to South Africa to show them a thing or two about trance.

Ahead of his headlining set at Turbulence, we also got Sean Tyas to answer some all-important questions. This leading star of the new breed producer-cum-DJ-cum-artist type has provided many a trance clubber with an epiphany from his soaring riffs coupled with signature driving beats. With a remix list already as long as your arm if you haven’t heard one of his tracks, you’ve been sorely missing out. So lets find out now what makes Tyas tick.

What do you regard as your greatest achievement in the production arena?

I would probably say this new Vincent de Moor – Fly Away remix I have just finished for MoreMoor (under Cloud9/Armada). I really nailed the sound texture I have been after for years.

What has been your favourite event to play at?

Definitely last weekend in Holland for the A State of Trance 300 Party. It was a huge crowd, from what I’m told roughly 7000 to 8000, and every last one of them was just as receptive as if I’d played at a 300 person small personal party. That was just a great vibe!

What do you enjoy playing more trance or progressive and why?

Trance any day, each track is an up and a down and at least to me, it’s always entertaining. Progressive can be really cool, but just sometimes I don’t want to make a huge deal about the appearance of a closed hi hat as a main element progression.

As this is your first visit to South Africa, tell us what you expect to find?

It’ll be my first time there, yup. I have no idea what to expect, but everyone I know that’s gone there always says it’s absolutely amazing.

How do you think you could help the music scene and what would make it a utopia?

Musical Utopia? As long as there’s FM radio and MTV will there ever be a musical Utopia?

You have remixed a number of well known tracks by artists such as Christina Aguilera, Pink, Moby, Daniel Bedingfield etc. Which is your most sentimental and why?

Moby, the others were more or less nothing for my passion of music. Looking back though, they were still good experiences. I’d say the Moby track simply because of how I got that remix deal. I just went into Manhattan to V2 Music (the label the track was on in the US) and brought them a demo CD, asked to remix Moby, then walked out. They rang me the next day, so it felt like a solid accomplishment.

Is there a specific tune out there that you have your mind on remixing?

Not at the moment surprisingly. Though one day I’d love to remix something by Paul van Dyk or Armin van Buuren.

How many current productions do you have under you belt?

Not really sure. A lot since last year though!

Is there any one out there that you would like to collaborate with?

Thomas Bronzwaer.

What made you want to DJ and produce music?

Paul van Dyk used to play at New York City’s now defunct Twilo. Seeing the effect trance music had on a dancefloor during when he played, that was something I couldn’t even put into words.

Which labels are you producing under?

The main label I produce for is Discover. Now under a new “Sean Tyas present Logistik” moniker, I’ll be producing for Armada as well.

Are there any other labels you’d like to feature on?

Always, for years now, I’ve wanted to do something for Vandit.

You started playing in 1999, was this still in New York, USA?

Yeah, I didn’t move to Europe until 2004, so all production and very minor DJing happened on that side of the pond.

Except for great chocolate, what made you move to Switzerland?

I met my fiancée while living in Germany in 2005. She was simply visiting a friend there and had to leave to go back to Switzerland at the end of that weekend. We carried on a relationship for a few months, each couple of weeks flying over to her or her coming back to Germany. After an invite from Moonman Productions in Switzerland (the camp of Dave 202, Dave Kolodziej, and Dave Joy) you didn’t exactly need to twist my arm to move there.

Any special surprises for us at Turbulence here in South Africa?

Hopefully a new production or two by the party date! I have a couple in development now.

Lastly, some quickfire questions:

Mountains or beaches
Beaches
CD or vinyl
At this point, CD
Tequila or Sours
Tequila
And for the ladies: boxers or briefs
Boxers! The boys need room to play!

Superb producer. Comes in for a bit of stick now and again but if you like your trance powerful, energetic and pumping, there's no-one better. Sean Tyas pres. Logistik: 'One More Night Out' is my favourite track of the year right now and a genuine Tune Of The Year contender. Nice interview! Smile
