Adam Sheridan, at the age of 23, has achieved more than most DJs will ever achieve in their entire career. Six years since his residency began at legendary northern club night Goodgreef, Adam’s three deck mixing, genre-crossing sound and quality productions on labels such as Purple Eye, Chemical Records, Storm Records and Maelstrom Records have seen him propelled from virtual unknown into global superstar. Now while Adam prepares to launch his very own imprint Soundstage Music, we got him to take a break and have an exclusive chat with us.
Can you tell us a little bit about your very first gig at Goodgreef in Manchester, at the tender age of 15? Must have been nerve racking hey?
Adam Sheridan: Yes it was quite a scary experience, I could barely see over the top of the turntables. It was a night in Manchester now known as Goodgreef. I played for the first hour and after the guys offered me a residency straight after, I was chuffed! At the start of my DJ career I played a lot of back rooms and smaller clubs.
HF: You recently played at the party of all parties, The Love Parade, alongside Paul Van Dyk. What was it like to share the experience of playing at such a high profile events in the world with the DJ that inspired you the most when you were an up and coming DJ experimenting with sounds?
AS: I have to say that the Love Parade was an amazing experience. It was a great honor for me to play on Paul’s float, quite unforgettable! I also played with him at the warm up party on the Friday night. I didn’t finish playing till 8 in the morning then it was almost straight onto the parade. I was so tired at the start of the parade but the energy and the atmosphere of it all was so overwhelming!
HF: Are there any big festivals happening this year where you would like to perform?
AS: I would love to do Creamfields UK again. I played closing set in the main arena last year and it was amazing. I love Creamfields, the Northerners know how to party! Also the Mayday festival in Germany was a great experience!
HF: Was it hard giving your first track to Paul Van Dyk on your 18th birthday? And what did it feel like when he played it?
AS: It was a very special night for me/ That moment has been one of my biggest inspirations to date; Paul has been one of my biggest inspirations full stop. It was one of the first tracks I had produced. Paul was doing one of his legendary six hour sets at Gatecrasher so I got the track cut onto Acetate. I was gutted when I got in there cause they had changed the DJ box around, they made it a lot higher so you couldn’t reach up 2 pass him the track. I had to climb on top of the speaker to give it to him, it came on about 3 o clock in the morning I was pretty speechless for the rest of the night!
HF: Your new label Soundstage music is launching in March — where do you see it going in the future? Will it feature solely your own productions or are you going productions from other DJs?
AS:To start with I’m just going to release my own projects. I’m thinking about setting up another artist alias to release on the label. There are a couple of projects down the studio at the moment that are really cool but I don’t think are quite right under the Adam Sheridan name. As time goes on I would really like to get some of my favourite artists and producers to do some remix work for the label, but for the meantime it’s just going to be my work on there.
HF: What made you take the big leap of launching your new label and can you give us an insight into the ideas behind the debut release ‘La Fiesta’?
AS I wanted to create something that I could be in full control of. A lot of music comes out of my studio. I get to see what works best on the dance floors so I thought it would be a really cool idea to launch my own label and release the music that is doing the business for me in the clubs. Basically I wanted more artistic control over my work and this is the best way. The reactions have been massive to ‘La Fiesta’. When I first sat down and produced ‘La Fiesta’ I never expected that it would be a release, I saw it as a more underground project that I was just going to use for my DJ performances. The reactions were that good, PVD and Eddie gave it radio play, so we decided to give it a full release.[/i]
HF: Are there any other goals that you wish to achieve in the near future outside of your music career?
AS:I’m really into my cooking at the moment, I’m a big food fan ya see so I thought it would make sense if I could whip up a storm in the kitchen. Apart from that my music pretty much takes up all my time.[/i]
HF: You have conquered challenges and encountered events in your life as a young DJ that has given hope to many young aspiring DJs — how does it feel to be an inspiration to other DJs? And what’s your best advice to wannabe superstar trance DJs?
AS: My advice would be to believe in yourself, I think that is really important. Always try and offer something that bit different from what’s on the market at the moment and don’t follow trends. Play the music that you love, not what’s cool and in at the minute![/i]
HF: Lastly, out of curiosity. How did you blag your way into clubs at the tender age of 15 and what did you do to get bookings?
AS: Ha… Should I really spill the beans?! I didn’t exactly look old for my age either. I use to sneak into the Orbit in Morley, that’s my hometown. People used to come from all over Europe to that club and it was right on my doorstep. The bookings really come from word a mouth. I’ve got a lot to thank the guys at Goodgreef, Sundissential and Slinky for for my early DJ Bookings!
