Techno Sessions preview: Ludgero mixes up the elements

Out of all the various types of dance music, techno is possibly the one people feel the most passionate about — generally, they either love it or hate it. Fortunately there’s more than enough of the former around to ensure that it’s now one of the largest and fastest growing genres on the planet, with new labels and releases abounding, led by a committed breed of old and new school alike, all driven to support a growing cause. One of these young techno disciples is Ludgero, a London-based Portuguese DJ who’s spreading his wings.
Having learnt to DJ and produce, he’s now taking things to the next level by promoting his own event. This Friday night sees the fruits of his labour unfold at Techno Sessions presents Mixed Elements at The Fridge.
With a main room lineup that reads like a who’s who of techno — including genre-defining giants Chris Liberator and D.A.V.E. the Drummer alongside men of the moment like Chris Finke and DJ Link — and a second room of minimal and electro, putting the talents of Jacqui Misfit, Jerome Hill, Syber Simon and Lucinda together with Ireland’s techno siren Clodagh, he’s certainly got his bases covered. With little known about Ludgero or his elemental plans, it was high time he made his HarderFaster debut.
Hi Ludgero. Thanks for taking time out of your busy week to answer some questions for HarderFaster.
For those readers who don’t know you, please tell us a bit about yourself and your background. You’re originally from Portugal; when did you first come to London and why? And what keeps you here when, let’s face it, the lifestyle is probably a lot easier back home?
I came from Lisbon, Portugal, when I was only 16, but my passion for music started when I was 13. Cypress Hill was my first album, I really liked it! But it wasn’t what I was looking for. Little did I know where I would turn to… my first proper techno party was in a college and I was so small that I would sneak in the gate in the back door, it was brilliant!!
The life style in Portugal is much better of course, there’s sun all the time, but to make your name you need to be in a place where parties happen all the time and there’s many more people. I came over to the UK fairly young so I'll try to build a good rep and then maybe I'll go back...
Were you into dance music back in Portugal, or was it something you discovered in London? What inspired you to start mixing techno?
I have some friends in Portugal and at that time they played techno. I would just watch them playing and think: “What the hell are they doing over there!?” Then I came here to UK, to Camberley in Surrey to live with my Mother and a friend had decks. I had a go and I though it was amazing. Later he sold me is decks.
How would you describe the Ludgero sound? Has it changed much since you first started playing?
I’ve change a bit. Now I’m not that hard, my ears, they can’t take it anymore!
What were your key musical influences growing up? And now?
My family’s musical culture influences a lot of my sounds all the time. They come from Angola in Africa, so I have a funky feeling when I play or produce…
When was the first time you played out? Did you find it hard to break into the scene?
A bit of course, I guess in the beginning every DJ finds it hard to break into the scene until people know who you are. But I wasn’t in a rush to be a DJ, I enjoyed the decks and music first.
What have been the highlights of your career so far?
I think it’s just starting now, I’ve been playing in clubs for over two years so maybe I’ll hit the spot soon I hope…
Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? What do you hope to achieve in 2007? And beyond?
I want to start my own label some time this year and travel around the world to play my music.
What, in your opinion, makes a good DJ? Is it mixing skill, tune selection, energy behind the decks or something else?
To be creative, connecting with the crowd and mixing skills.
What DJs or producers do you respect the most at the moment?
Hertz, Valentino Kanzyani, Marko Nastic, Dejan Milicevic, Frank Biassi, Dave Clarke, Monika Kruse, Chris Liberator, Dave the Drummer and many many more...
Vinyl, CD or digital? What do you think about recent advances in DJ technology — do they make it easier for DJs to play their music or is it more difficult than ever to stay at the top of your game?
My preference at the moment is vinyl, but I like to use CDJs because I can play my own tunes and it’s easier to mix.
If you were being sent to a desert island and could only take three things with you, what would they be?
A sound system, a girl, drugs and rock & roll...
OK that’s really a whole lot more than three things but we’ll let you away with it this time. Do you consider yourself a promoter or a party animal? A clubber or a raver?
I think I am a bit of party animal, as after I play I always like to go and dance with my friends.
You’ve recently started producing your own tunes. Are you self-taught or do you have a good teacher? What software do you use in the studio and do you have any tracks in the pipelines or are you still learning the ropes?
I've been making music for two years. I started using Fruity Loops, then my friend who’s a drum & bass producer showed me how to use Logic. So now that’s what I use and I’m very happy with some off my tunes but always learning something new to improve my skills...

This week is a week of awards ceremonies, with the Breakspoll Awards at Fabric on Thursday and the Hard Dance Awards at Brixton Academy this Saturday. If you were going to organise a Techno Awards party, where would you have it and who would you ask to play? Which techno legends would you ask to present the awards?
I would do it at Brixton Academy and I’d get Dave Clarke and/or Carl Cox.
As a DJ, promoter and aspiring producer you must have very little free time. What do you do to unwind — or do you really live and breath music 24/7?
Yeah pretty much that! Music 24/7 or organizing a party, sometimes I go out to meet some contacts but always with the music in the back of my mind...
You’ve got a wicked myspace site at myspace.com/ludgerotechnosessions and some notable myspace friends including Carl Cox, Daft Punk, D.A.V.E. the Drummer and Chris Finke. Do you see it as a promoter’s best friend or yet another thing that gets in the way when you’d rather be in the studio or behind the decks?
It’s definitely the promoter’s best friend — you make contacts, get to know all the big names and chat with them, listen to new tunes: it’s very useful.
You’re the main driving force behind Techno Sessions presents Mixed Elements this Friday night at the Fridge. How did you put the line-up together? Why the name ‘Mixed Elements’?
It’s called ‘Mixed Elements’ because it will be all kinds of techno, minimal techno and electro so it will be a electronic sounds night, all mixed up, element by element...
You’ve got two live acts playing this Friday night, DJ Link from Portugal and Rob Stow. Why did you choose these two to play live? What does it mean to play a ‘live’ techno set?
I’m actually only having one live set by Rob Stow. DJ Link is playing on the decks and I got him because he’s one off the best DJs in Portugal at the moment and has got a couple of new labels.
Playing live means playing using the computer, mixing desk, drum machines and keyboards to play your own tunes.
You’ve played at some of the top techno parties and venues in the capital, including Turnmills, Hidden and SeOne. Why did you decide to launch your own new night at the Fridge?
Because I can’t just wait to play at other people’s parties all the time! If you want to be known you have to do you own party, it’s the best way to promote yourself.
Finally, why should HF readers come to the Fridge this Friday night?
Because if they don’t they’ll miss out on a new wave of techno vibe that’s growing up stronger then ever, it’s as simple as that...
There’ll be new styles with the old styles, two rooms of quality sound, friendly people and the hottest tunes you’ll hear...
You’d better be there because we’re not going to film it to show you what you’re going to miss!

Chris Finke has quickly established himself as a bright young thing of the future , now playing weekly around the UK and Europe, regularly performing in countries such as France, Spain, Holland, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and the USA, turning heads (and probably a few stomachs) as he does so. His imaginative 3 deck hip-hop style is different to most DJs-he is one of the few people out there that really does mix up everything from jacking house music through to rock-hard thumping techno, taking in the classics, Latin beats, electro and long forgotten gems along the way. His production skills will soon be put to the public test when he releases his own material on both FLUX and Shuffle, and is currently lining up releases for a number of well established labels.
CHRIS FINKE is one of the most popular DJs in the UK and a former contender in the DMC championships, Chris Finke runs the SPLIT parties in London with BEN SIMS, and also co-hosts the SPLIT RADIO SHOW.
