Warning interview with Getonit

Reported by Jazzy / Submitted 22-11-06 20:26

Warning events are the latest in up and coming djs featuring a selection of music genres ranging from hardcore through to hard house. The first Warning took place at the George IV and was originally an event for the celebration of Getonit’s 22nd birthday. It was a raging success, and after receiving great feedback from all involved, Darren has decided to put on an even bigger better Warning at the mass this weekend. I decided to catch up with the horse himself and ask him a few questions about the upcoming event…

How did the original idea for Warning come about?

Hello! Basically it all started in the summer of this year. Before we went out to Ibiza for a week in June, me and a few mates were discussing that we go clubbing so often we should create something personal to give back to the clubbing scene, as well as reward ourselves by showcasing new up and coming djs and blending them with more established djs.

From then, how did you make the idea a reality?

I completed my degree at University in August and my 22nd birthday was looming at the beginning of September, so I decided to hold an event at the George IV with all my mates playing for me, rather than just going out to another regular clubbing night. So I went about booking the Friday night at George IV. Once confirmed, I decided to promote the event through posters and flyers as well as word of mouth via all my mates. Booking the djs was pretty simple as they are all close friends and were well excited as some had never played out before.

What inspired you to name the event Warning?

At the time, it was the perfect word I could think of to encapsulate the type of event as well as the line up I wanted to have.

I noticed your event has an equine theme, why is that?

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for horses, and decided to incorporate my two favourite things at my party.

Talk me through the line up…

For my birthday, I had a mixture of djs play, ranging from 00Frenchy to Steve O’Brady and Paul Batten who individually play their own style of music. This is what I wanted to bring across at my event, instead of having just one genre of music getting progressively harder throughout the night. Having that approach behind my DJ selection made the night exciting, appealing to all types of clubbers across the music board. This formula proved to work really well and therefore I will continue to use this formula for the upcoming Warning events.’

So how did the event go?

Way above expectations!! I had the help of the hUJe family to transform the George with their décor. Thanks to all involved! Considering that the George only opened until 3am I was slightly worried that this would affect the night’s turnout, but actually I ended up getting over 250 people and friends through the door. So therefore the night absolutely rocked!!

I have noticed that you have now moved the upcoming Warning to the Mass, why so?

Unfortunately the George has been sold to a Entertainment Corporation and the music policy has changed. After deliberating what venues would be suitable and which were available, luckily Mick at the Mass had an available date for the 24th of November and I decided to take it. I feel the Mass has a suitable feel accompanied by an awesome sound system and am looking forward to many future Warnings here.

What can we expect from the upcoming Warning?

One set I’m sure many people will be looking forward to will be 00Frenchy b2b Alex Minassi, who have not played together for 8 years and will be reuniting to play a classic NRG, set. Another extremely talented DJ I have chosen is the awesome Taaam Basquil from Twist, this will certainly be a “WARNING” set. Another old friend, Twon, aka “The Prophet” will grace the decks b2b with Paul Batten for 2 hours — beware! Also this time round we are open to party right through until 6am which I am well up for — get your stomping shoes out!’

You have recently started a new job, how stressful has this made promoting your event?

Mega! I’m trying to organise the event with all the PR involved, organising the djs and arranging all the other bits and bobs involved, making sure the event runs smoothly on the night on one hand, whilst on the other juggling, learning the traits of a new job and looking for a new place to live.

The first Warning was to celebrate your birthday, is there anything special about this one?

There certainly is. Warning will be celebrating two of our mates’ joint 21st birthdays: John Edwards aka “The Cowboy” and Kevin Dobbins aka “Kevsey-d.” In honour of their birthdays they will each be playing an hour set.

Give us a background into your clubbing career.

It all started about 4 years ago, when I went to Peach @ Camden Palace. This got me hooked by the balls. I fell in love with the scene and the atmosphere. Other events I went to regularly back then were Afterlife and Wired at George 4, small but personal. I have always preferred smaller more intimate events versus large commercialised raves. Back then it wasn’t really about the music, it was more about having a good time with my mates, now I would say I am more fussy about the events I go to and the music they play.

What events meet your musical preference?

Sadly today there are not many that do! I enjoy going to Warning (obviously), Insekt, and I love VC, Storm and definitely Twist on a Sunday morning. These events really fulfil my music preference, and are the places I have met many wonderful friends. Don’t get me wrong, I do support other nights as well but these are what stand out in my opinion.

Which DJs would you like to have play at future Warnings?

Definitely Karim as he is my musical legend. Also Justin Bourne as well as Pete Wardman and Ian M — the Godfather of Hard House!

What are your future plans with Warning?

Over the next year I would like Warning to become an established event in the scene and be widely talked about. I now plan to hold the event bi-monthly, because today doing a monthly event is too much of a challenge. I want to continue to introduce new talent into the scene as well as give new djs the opportunity to showcase their ability.’

And finally, what would you like Santa Claus to bring you this year?

Loads of Cider and a new winter jacket!

Thanks very much for your time and all the effort you are putting into a quality event! See you on the dance floor Mr. Nowak!!

More: After trying to find a suitable venue for WARNING I have secured the Stage Room at the MASS. If you haven't been here it will definitely be worth coming down.

I’m sure you will agree that the 8th September was a rocking party with over 250 people through the door!

This time WARNING is celebrating a joint 21st birthday for Kevesy D and John Edwards a.k.a. ‘The Cowboy’ on Friday 24th November. These two guys are well known around club land for their party antics and love of hard- core. For this special night John is playing hard core & Kevsey D will be playing classic Hard House.

WARNING is only £5 on the door; there is NO EXCUSE not to come down and ‘avit at the MASS!' The stage room offers a second to none sound system that will encapsulate you in banging music. There is a chill out area and plenty of space to dance.

Join us on the dance floor for an eclectic selection of Hard Dance from up and coming DJ’s to the well established.

THE DJ’s

The awesome 00Frenchy will be playing again for us, this time b2b with Alex Minassi after 8 years! They are collaborating together to offer something special and a little treat for us all; a classic NRG set. These guys are going to show us how it’s done.

WARNING can proudly welcome a one off- set by Twist’s finest, filthiest resident- Tom Basquil. He is coming to the MASS to do what he does best- Hard House! Come on Welling.

One set everyone can’t wait for is Paul Batten b2b The Prophet. The Prophet, who has been DJ’ing for over ten years and was part of Brixton’s biggest Sunday party- Afterlife, is returning to the decks. Playing with Paul this set will be relentless and pure NRG all the way! This set will certainly be entertaining!

One guy not to be forgotten is Irish Danny. He played at the last WARNING straight after John and Kevin and gave a sublime performance. Danny has so much energy behind the decks you could get an electric shock! Danny is back so be prepared.

And finally Sneaky Pete will be playing for us. He is a talented DJ and knows how to rock a dance floor. Pete will be playing Techno aswell as NRG Hard House.
