Over the past seven years Logic has played host to some of the most memorable live stage shows ever seen in the capital with Lab 4, K90, Captain Tinrib and the Nu Energy Collective having all regularly graced the Logic stage. It has long been famous as a party that pushes new acts and djs who go on to reach superstar status: Yoji Biomehanika played his first UK gig for Logic and Proteus has gone on to feature in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs in both 2004 and 2005.

From Opal Live (Oberon and Paul Harding) to the present day Logic has consistently pulled out all the stops to showcase debut performances. At Logic: Interface 6 production powerhouse OD404 performed live for the first time and more recently Logic flew in Finnish sensation Alex Szahala for a live freeform set of truly epic proportions.

On July 29th back at Logic’s spiritual home, The Fridge, and just as in years gone by, a new live act will take to the Logic stage for their world exclusive debut. The hottest hard dance production duo on the planet right now, MDA & Spherical, launch Welcome2TheFuture LiVe and every hard trance fanatic is strongly advised to be there.
For those who have heard their name or are a little unsure as to what to expect, let us give you a brief synopsis of who exactly MDA & Spherical are and why they are being touted as the future of hard dance.
It was smash hit ‘Controllin’ Me’ written with Chris Hoff and featuring the vocals of Jennie Rix released on Tidy, which catapulted MDA & Spherical into the limelight. Lisa Lashes, The Tidy Boys, Rob Tissera, Nick Sentience and just about every other hard dance dj around caned the track and it appeared on the massive selling Tidy Addict album. From then on their reputation has continued to grow stronger as they carve out a unique hard trance sound with production quality that defies their years. Hard trance pioneer and Frantic legend Phil Reynolds is full of praise for them saying recently:
I’ve been a fan of MDA & Spherical for a while now. Excellent producers making quality music. They are very diverse with their sound and I’ve been really impressed with everything they’ve done so far.
Hard dance prodigy Technikal also pays testament to the respect, that not only clubbers, but also fellow artists have for their music when he says,
I’ve been following the progress of MDA & Spherical since the very beginning, and recognised their huge talent a couple of years ago when I fell in love with their ‘Devotion’ track. Since then, they have become my favourite hard dance producers, constantly pushing the envelope with new sounds and ideas. I don’t think I’ve played a set recently without at least 2 of their productions in there!
The last six months have seen them step it up a level on both the production and performance fronts. So far in 2006 they have had their first two track solo release, the ‘MDA & Spherical EP’ out on Oblivion Recordings, including two exclusive edits for Wipeout Pure for the Sony PSP. They have remixed Phil York’s ‘Drop the Beat’s Out’ and Technikal & JK’s ‘Crank It Up’ for Tranzlation Whites; Steve Hill & Technikal’s ‘Weekend’ for Masif; Nick Rowland’s ‘Communicate’ for Nuklear Puppy; XinetD & Interphaze’s ‘Future Independence’ for Species Records; as well as having original track ‘Dutch Courage’ signed to Tranzlation and two more tracks, ‘Tekamine’ & ‘Phantasm’, signed to Oblivion Recordings.
They have rocked Amsterdam for Ilovehardhouse vs. Riot!, played the closing set for Innovate and put in a show stopping performance at Hard House Academy. Combine all this with signing to Oblivion Artist Management and putting together one hell of a live show and it’s safe to say they have been rather busy so far this year! With a tour of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa on the horizon the workload won’t be getting any easier!
What makes MDA & Spherical special is not merely the incredible attention to detail in their music, but also that they lead the way as part of a new generation of artists who can be regularly be found hanging out on various internet forums happy to offer feedback on tracks, offering ideas and sharing techniques. It is exactly this kind of attitude, breaking down boundaries between the clubber and the artist, that has helped them create such a wide fan base and recognition for the quality of their work and exactly the attitude that makes Logic the perfect place for them to debut ‘Welcome2the Future’ Live. A recent comment on their My Space page (www.myspace.com/mdasphericalmusic) left by Steve Hill shows the respect they command from their peers and the high hopes that all involved with hard dance music have for them.

They have been locked away for weeks putting the show together and although the blueprints are still under lock and key, we managed to catch up with the deadly duo and ask a few questions about one of the most eagerly anticipated live shows in recent years.
Hi guys. Your first live show is fast approaching! Was this a natural progression for you after the success of your recent productions?
For us the live show is really about taking things to the next level. As producers we often feel quite limited with what you can do on some turntables/cdjs. The live show changes all this — the possibilities truly do become endless.
It gives us a chance to use a much wider variety of tools and effects to create a more engaging and interactive experience. Put this together with the fact that you can use a full stage and put on more of a show — it’s definitely the next step of performance that we felt we needed to progress to.
A quick question for the geeks out there. What equipment will you be using on stage at Logic?
Most of our equipment is software-based running off a PC. The core of the show uses Ableton Live, with various VST synths and effects running. To control it all we have several MIDI controllers and keyboards. This goes alongside all the processing equipment for Jennie’s vocals and Mark’s bass guitar with the amp. There’s quite a lot to set up.
How much preparation has it taken to put the show together? Did you both see the show heading in a similar direction or has there been any arguments along the way with differences of opinions? Do you generally see eye to eye in the studio?
Having worked together in the studio for so long we generally know and appreciate what the other wants/is thinking (including all the dirty dark secrets!). All in all, the PA has taken over two months to put together. Although this doesn’t include writing the actual material, if you include that you’re looking at a lot longer!
Where do you guys get your musical inspiration from? Is it all hard dance for your ear sex pleasure? What do MDA & Spherical like to listen to around the house or in the car?
Matt: I’m a fan of most types of music really. Like they say there are only two types of music: good music and bad music. Saying that, at the moment the breaks and psy trance scenes are throwing up some particularly tasty tunes. I think having a varied taste definitely helps when producing as it allows you to take inspiration from and combine ideas from right across the musical spectrum — that can never be a bad thing!
Mark: I’ve always been into most kinds of music, and tend to listen to a variety, although I go through phases about which genre I focus on most. Currently I’m listening to a lot of tech-house, electro and tech-trance. I’ll listen to pretty much anything though, as inspiration for new tracks have been known to come from the most obscure places.
How does it feel to be following in the footsteps of artists such as OD404, Nu Energy Collective, Yoji Biomehanika and Proteus by taking to the famous Logic stage?
It feels pretty amazing to follow such big names at Logic. We hope it’s an indication of things to come as they have all successfully taken their performances around the globe. From the first time we attended Logic we felt its party vibe would make it the perfect place to launch the show. The fact that it’s their 7th birthday is only going to make it more special.
It’s a formidable line up .Who else are you looking forward to seeing on the night?
Matt: I’m quite looking forward to seeing Sutekh play. Although I’ve not seen him before I’ve heard he plays some awesome psy trance, a sound I’m really into at the moment.
Mark: Simon Eve is the dj that most interests me at Logic. I’ve always wanted to see him play — he’s a name that I’ve heard of since day one but never had the opportunity. That’ll soon change.
Without giving too much away, as I know it’s top secret, but what sort of thing can we expect from you on the 29th?
Heh, well that’s classified information don’t you know. You can expect live re-edits of a few of our old tracks, along with some brand new material with live vocals courtesy of singer Jennie Rix.
