Not many DJs can lay claim to remixing a top 20 hit, being featured on two gold selling albums, toured with Dave Pearce’s ‘Dance Athems’ and have played out in front of thousands all by the time they reach the grand old age of 21! Well we know a man who can… Yes! introduces Ben Gold!

We hunted him down at his studio in North London to find out a little more about the infamous Gold Dynasty!

So Ben, you really seem to making waves in London at the moment, and you are still only 21. How old were you and was there defining moment when you just knew this is what you wanted to do.

I was 15, out in Ibiza with a close mate of mine (his parents took us away as we had just finished out GCSEs). We stayed just out San Antonio, and did the normal things 15 year olds would do, stick by the pool, eye up the talent etc. I knew what my dad did, but wasn’t really interested in it to be honest, dance music wasn’t my thing. We hooked up with him and he took us out for the day to Cafe Del Mar. I had my wallet with a fair bit of money in, so gave it to him as I didn’t want to lose it. He dropped us off then I realised I had left my wallet with him, purely by mistake. I couldn’t get hold of him, but saw a poster where he was playing that night, so I went to the club, blagged it to the guest list girl, and when he arrived, I asked if it was ok to come in for a bit and check it out! It was when I was standing in the DJ box, seeing 1500 ppl in Es Paradis going ballistic that I wanted to be a DJ!

What can we expect from you at Yes!? And are you looking forward to it?

A set full of euphoric, energetic, driving trance! I will also be show casing some of the new ‘Ben Gold’ material as well, which I’m really excited about! Having a full on tech trance night in London now is brilliant! I have been playing it for just over a year, and it is getting stronger and stronger. It won’t be long till tech trance is the new ‘trance’! I look forward to every gig I do! I played at the first Yes! for their soon to be infamous 3 way vs set and loved it. The night worked musically and the atmosphere was excellent! I was DJing the night of the second one, as was gutted to miss it, so going to make up for it in March!

Although your dad is the legendary Graham Gold, it seems dead clear that you so want to do this on your own, but is he supportive? And are you worried people will say you got there because of who your dad is?

Yeah he is supportive! He always said that no matter what I decided to do, I would have his support. And no I’m not worried what others say. I went to college and got a distinction in Music Technology, I am a full time studio engineer and I work completely on my own when it comes to the studio, from engineering to producing to writing it. I used to get people telling me “you’re only in your position because of you old man”, but anyone who knows me, knows that I work every hour god sends!!

We’ve had a sneak preview of some of your recent productions yet to be released, and there is no doubt that they stand up against the best that is out there. Did you realise how important producing was going to be and how did you get into it? Did you take any music lessons?

I knew the likes of Ferry, Armin, etc weren’t just DJs, so I took up piano lessons to try and get an understanding of music. When I left college, I got into the studio with an engineer, did a few bits, but I wanted to be hands on, so I got a small studio at home, nothing flashy or expensive, but enough to get started. The rest is history!

You have grown up in an era where house music and all its sub genres have dominated global clubbing. Do you see that continuing?

I can’t see people not wanting to go out on the weekends, so yes I can see it continuing for many years to come! DJs like Tiesto have taken it to a new level by performing concerts, and if 1 DJ can fill an 80,000 capacity venue, both Friday and Saturday night, two years on a trot, it can only get stronger!!

Who really does it for you at the moment as far as producers and DJs go?

Fred Baker, everytime! Both on the remix and original front! His remix of Mystery — ‘Out of the Past’ (Armada), which is doing the rounds at the moment, is one of the best records I have heard! Lee Osborne, both as a DJ and Producer, is rising rapidly too! His music is full of energy!

And what labels do you look to for new music, and also maybe signing your own stuff to?

I’m not really a label guy to be honest, if the track rocks, then I don’t mind where it came from! But I would love to eventually get my tracks on Spinnin’, if I had to choose 1 label that would be it!

You have played quite a lot of gigs already, what has been your favorite so far?

They are all good. Peach was amazing. 1250 people, main stage, main set at 18 are a memory that will stay with me forever! One that stands out a lot kinda recently was Students Fresher’s ball @ Herts Uni last October. I did the night with Dave Pearce, played first, 4 1/2 hour set, and I really wasn’t sure what to expect, being a student event etc but every track worked. A really up for it crowd! Had lots of fun!

Where can we expect to see you in the next few months, and has it been easy getting the gigs?

Next few months I’m performing at Yes! @ Hidden, March 4th, Slinky @ The Opera House, March 10th and Gallery/Vaccine @ Turnmills, April 14th! Getting gigs hasn’t been easy no! I decided to focus on studio work instead of sending loads of time sending demos out as I found nothing really comes from them! I always got feedback, from the likes of Slinky & the Gallery, basically saying, until your profile gets bigger, we can’t book you! I have found since my production work is out there, getting support from the big boys, the gigs are starting to come!

How important is all this to you. And where do you see yourself (or hoping) you will end up?

Music is my life! I’m lucky enough to work in a studio full time, although it seems I live there! But having a supportive family around me is equally as important! Hardly being at home on the weekends and working almost every evening, means I don’t get to see them that much, but they have all continued to give me 100% backing! I just want to continue what I’m doing, but obviously on a much bigger scale!

If music wasn’t your be all and end all, what else would rock your boat?

Chef! I love cooking! Being at work all the time means I cook for myself when I get in, but no matter how tired, I find the energy! Love it!

You can catch Ben Gold at Yes! @ Hidden 4th March alongside Trance luminaries Scott Bond, Ronski Speed, Reece Elliot, Brisky and Lee Osborne! Don’t miss out!

yes ben, nice beard Razz

From: pk on 25th Feb 2006 14:54.17
a wicked dj, producer, and generally lovely bloke!

if you get a chance to watch him dj, then take it. Half of the stuff he does with FX and looping is done so well that most clubbers cant tell he's doing anything - but it builds the vibe of his set and elevates the room without being at all obvious!

anyone that says he's got where he is, because of his dad, is a fool. ben is a fantastic DJ - maybe it's in his blood! but he really deserves his own merit.

top interview ben!
