2005 Round-up with Frantic’s Genesis AllStars

Reported by benz / Submitted 03-12-05 14:35

That was quick! It seems like just yesterday we were pouring out of the street from Koko after Frantic’s off-the-hook New Year’s Day celebration, blearly-eyed and confused. All of a sudden it’s 11 months later, and a whole year of hard dance shennanigans has passed us by. In the first of a two-part feature, we brought together some of Frantic’s favourite DJs ahead of their appearance at Frantic’s first event of 2006 — Genesis NYD — to look over the year gone by.

Cally Gage has had an amazing year, excelling in her role as Frantic resident and rapidly establishing herself as one of the biggest names in hard dance this year with gigs across the country week in, week out. Lisa Pin-Up continued her amazing resurgence, and once again enjoys a status as one of the most successful and popular DJs in the scene. It’s also been a fantastic year for Wildchild’s starlet Little Gem, who has also become a firm fixture at hard dance clubs nationwide as well as repeatedly rocking Frantic and Wildchild throughout the year. Frantic’s Elvis has gone from strength to strength, with some awesome gigs for the club as well as the continued success of his promotions Zoology and Paradoxx, and some excellent production work with Nu Energy Collective. Finally, Steve Maynard continues to excel as one of the finest hard house DJs around, and his first forrays into the world of production have been met with much acclaim.

If you are looking for a way to start the New Year in style, this lot must just be what you are looking for...

What was your single most enjoyable moment of the year, clubbing, DJing or otherwise?

Cally Gage: This is quite a hard question, to have to pinpoint one single event is quite difficult as there have been a few. The first one that comes to mind, as always, was Timeless on 1st October at the legendary KoKo Club. Timeless is one of my favourite events anyway but to get to play back-to-back with my gorgeous boyfriend and amazing DJ Andy Whitby — well, it was just awesome. Me and Andy have wanted to play b2b for quite some time now, so to get the chance to do so at Timeless was just perfect. The set went amazingly well and the crowd absolutely loved it — I really didn’t want it to finish.

Cally Gage

The next event that I really enjoyed would have to be WestFest, which was down at the Royal West & Bath Showground. I was asked to step in right at the last minute, so to have played in the main room at my first ever festival was just unbelievable — how exciting! I can’t tell you how many people that arena held, but it was a lot and it filled up so quickly. They also had a camera on the decks that pointed my image onto a big screen behind me which was ace, I had so much fun there and got to play a bit longer as the next DJs were late arriving — it was awesome and has definitely given me the bug to try more festivals next summer if I get the chance.

Little Gem: Now that is difficult as there has been so many! I think one of my fave DJing highlights would be back in Feb, playing in the main room at Heaven at the first Wildchild event of the year and handing over to the legendary Lisa Lashes!

Clubbing moment would be the many fun packed mornings I’ve spent at Twist!

Lisa Pin-Up: Being up behind the decks at Brixton Academy for Frantic vs Wildchild in June. I just looked around me and could not believe my eyes how fantastic the gig was, behind those decks it was orgasmic! I was so happy and the amount of adrenaline pumping through my veins I actually thought I was rushing!

Elvis: Has to be when I played the foyer at HHA 5th Bday! Next year it will be the main stage.

Steve Maynard: Other than playing at Twist for the first time, nothing has been more enjoyable than watching Paul Glazby and Justin Bourne nail it out for 3 hours at Insekt last January!

Which tune proved time and time again to be your biggest track in your sets over the course of 2005?

CG: There have obviously been so many great tunes released over the past year, that again, to pinpoint it down to one would be impossible. The ones that stick out most for me are the ones produced by Alf Bamford (AKA Technikal) and also all the amazing remixes that Andy Whitby has done, I have also been playing quite a lot of Lee Pasch tunes over the past 6 months which you never tire of listening to.

LG: There’s been loads to be honest! One that has really stood the test of time would be James Lawson’s remix of ‘Respect’ on Elasticman. I’ve been playing that since the beginning of the year and still play it now! Other tracks would include Matt Farker’s mix of ‘Fine Day’, Avaline’s ‘Never Sever’ and Ingo & Lisa Lashes’ ‘Desire’ and I must admit that my own tracks have proved quite successful on the dancefloor too! Sorry couldn’t resist a chance to shamelessly self promote!

LPU: There have been a few! These have had the biggest reaction and are the most requested out of all the tunes in my set: ‘The Prophecy’ by DJ Resh (the one with the Bill Hicks vocal), ‘Open Window’ by Matt Farker EJ, ‘Really Like Cocaine’ by Lisa Pin-Up, ‘Your Arse Is Mine’ by Sebanelli & Odd Bod, and ‘All You Bastards’ by Cally & Juice (Robbie Long & Stormtrooper 150 remix).

E: ‘Voodoo Lover’ a hard house remix of Prodigy’s ‘Voodoo People’. This tune never fails to get a good reaction on the dance floor.

Elvis with Cally Gage

SM: Humm... there’s been loads of great tracks released over the past year, it’s difficult to narrow it down to just one. Two of my favs still are OD404 — ‘Wizz Bang’ and Allnighters — ‘Black is Black’ (Killer Hurts remix).

Which event had the most electric atmosphere?

CG: Over the past year I have had the chance to play at some amazing events all over the country, but the event with the most electric atmosphere has to be Frantic. I know you’re going to say that I’m biased as I’m a resident, but they never fail to impress. So much effort goes into each event that you are never disappointed, I am always excited about Frantic events for months before they happen and the crowd at each one always seem to have the best time ever — you just can’t beat a Frantic crowd!

LG: Again, there has been loads so it would be difficult to pick one, so I’ll give a few! OK, here goes (in no particular order)…

Wildchild 3rd Birthday, Oct 05
Frantic 8th Birthday, Aug 05
Future @ Brixton Academy, Jun 05
Slinky @ The Opera House, Sept 05

To be honest though, virtually all events I’ve played at or been to, have all been wicked and going off! I think it’s been a great year for clubland!

E: Hard House Academy 5th Birthday! Laboratory in the main room was awesome! It felt more like rock concert than a dance event… ROCK ON!

SM: You can’t beat the atmosphere in the foyer at Hard House Academy!

Which label has consistently delivered for you this year?

CG: Paul’s Boutique and Killah are my favourite labels, they always make good clothes, lol!

No seriously, over the last year there have been many great labels that have delivered good tunes and I have also been lucky enough to receive a lot of material that hasn’t been released or even signed yet, these are the tunes that I get most excited about. One label that is going to definitely deliver and is due to start next year, is AWSUM — that is all I can say about that though, watch this space.

LG: Hmm, now then let’s see… I’d have to say… Elasticman, NEC Live, Dynamix, Detox, Vicious, Tidy, Submatic, Nukleuz + more! There’s been some wicked releases for sure!

Little Gem

LPU: Tidy Trax and Nukleuz.

E: NEC Live has really done it for me this year. I have enjoyed every single release so far. Check out NEC LIVE #2 ‘Something In Me’, my favourite track on the label.

SM: No surprises here, Vicious Circle and Spinball are ridiculously consistent.

What has been your proudest achievement in 2005?

CG: Being given the opportunity to play alongside some of the biggest DJs in the scene, being able to play b2b with great DJs such as Lisa Pin-Up, having at least 2 gigs each and every weekend and also having been made Frantic resident after only playing out for less than a year — there have been so many achievements and so many more for me to fulfil.

LG: My proudest achievement this year would have to be a combination of mixing my first mix album, Wildchild reaching the grand old age of 3 and selling out the awesome SeOne complex and last but not least, launching my production career and getting in the studio with the likes of Ingo, Dark by Design, Ben Kaye, K Complex and more! It certainly has been a busy year!

LPU: I can’t believe how much fun I have had this year. I have being DJing around 9 years and I just seem to enjoy myself more and more. So my proudest achievement this year is looking back at my diary and seeing how much I have crammed into it, a good few stories to tell when I am old!

Lisa Pin-Up at Smile

E: Playing main stage, Frantic 8th Birthday at Koko (aka Camden Palace).

SM: There’s been a couple of things that’s happened over the past year that I’ve been dead chuffed with. Firstly getting a residency at Twist, something I thought would never happen in a million years. Also getting a couple of my tracks signed to excellent labels such as Flashpoint and Deprivation.

Which up and coming talents have really shone through this year?

CG: Andy Rise, Garbo and Matt Pickup have been among the top 3 DJs who are destined for even better things throughout 2006. The amount of new DJs that come through each year is definitely making the scene more fresh and exciting, keeping everyone on their toes and the clubbers entertained.

LG: There seems to be loads of new peeps coming through which is wicked for the scene! The likes of Seany Sean, Em J & Sykes, James Condon, Matt Pickup, Glen Gavin, Stewart Hill and Burny are all top DJs and something fresh for the scene! Rock on guys!

I also think it’s important that the likes of Frantic and us at Wildchild continue to make a point of playing new DJs, as it’s so important to give everyone a chance to prove that there are many many talented DJs out there.

LPU: Cally Gage!

E: I could name quite a few! Luke Warner, Seany Sean, Jon Fornow, and Gordon Darley are a few I could mention who always impress me!

SM: I’ve said it before, Tom Basquil and Richard Toomz are excellent DJs. It’s great to see them getting some recognition with Tom being at Twist now and Rich just landing a residency at Insekt. On the production front Dave Owens and Frank Farrell are just about to explode!

What was the most enjoyable set you played this year?

LG: My most enjoyable set of the year would have to be playing the last set at the Wildchild 3rd Birthday. I’d just finished playing b2b with K90, which was fantastic enough, but was then informed I needed to stay on for another hour! I did the last hour on my own and I have to say it was amazing! I even came off saying that it was the most enjoyable set I’ve ever played!

LPU: As mentioned above my set at Brixton Academy, also my set at KoKo for Frantic vs Hardcore Heaven where I did a back to back set with Cally Gage, as us girls sure know how to sock it to them! All the tidy Weekenders especially tidy Summer camp when they introduced me as now being an official tidy Girl as it was the first time I had DJed for them since joining their agency. Storm — the atmosphere is this club is just so electric (see everyone here N.Y.E!), Tidy Ibiza, some very, very messy nights! Wildchild in London on October 29th — the DJ after me could not get his equipment set up so I got to do two sets and I had such a party! Pam’s House — these guys are totally nutters! Polysexual, as always amazing to play to my friends in Birmingham — proper hard house clubbers. Slinky in Bournemouth — I’ve played here for so many years but each time it still feels special. Dance Academy in Plymouth and Tranzaction in Truro both in the South West, again I’ve been playing these two clubs since the start of my career and the clubbers really like their music
uplifting, so I know I will definitely be having a fun night when ever I visit. Hardsouth in Brighton — I always say it’s England’s own little Ibiza, soon as you walk into the club you get that feeling holiday vibe and they like their music nice and hard so I can bang out the tunes. Sundissential Leeds — this club is just such an institution and always a pleasure to DJ at. Knowwhere in London the most friendly promoters around which also attracts really lovely clubbers and last but not least, The Syndicate in Blackpool as the venue is just so spectacular.

E: Recently I played for 123 at Southside Bar. I had such a wicked time and every mix seemed to go so perfectly for me… I could do no wrong!

SM: Either my first set at Twist or Future back in June.

What was the most annoying trend of 2005?

CG: I think it has to be the Crazy Frog, it was never something I was very fond of as it used to drive me absolutely crazy every time I heard it — I am so glad that’s now over!

LG: Hmm, most annoying trend?! I guess for most people it would probably be the Crazy Frog, although I personally never had much of a problem with it! Even got a t-shirt with him emblazoned on it! Sad I know!

E: Hmmm. I couldn’t really comment on that!

SM: Burberry?? Or was that the year before?

Steve Maynard

And there we have it. The hard dance scene is certainly facing some big challenges in these times, but I think that 2005 has shown once again that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Maybe it’s not what it once was, but it’s still a damn good scene with a lot of damn good DJs, clubs, music and a fanbase that is second to none in terms of passion and energy. So what does 2006 hold in store? Who’s gonna be big? What’s going to change? Are robots going to replace DJs? Watch this space...
