Infected Mushroom and the number of the beast

Diversity of promotion is a luxury many outside the boundaries of London do not have. In fact we could probably be labelled as spoilt for choice, there really is something for everyone in the capital on any given weekend, some on school nights as well for that matter. But head away from the big city lights and you start to wonder what else is out there. I’m sure most regular partygoers will be at least aware of the giant northern and midland promotions, even if they’ve not personally witnessed them, but that aside can you name any others? Trawling through the What’s On section something a little different caught my eye. An event based not in London but in Bristol, a city I’m far from familiar with as clubbing goes, and hosting non-other than psy trance live giants Infected Mushroom.
So with my curiosity aroused I delved deeper and went off in search of the man behind the party, 666 promoter and DJ Sean Rudz, in an effort to broaden my horizons and find out exactly if cider is king in the West Country.
So Sean is it true . . . do all you West Country types drink nothing but cider or do you have the usual lager louts as well?
Hahaha, no, that stereotype is not entirely true! We have cider as our staple diet (breakfast/lunch/dinner). But we do like a nice drink in-between. So, on the whole we are an eclectic bunch when it comes to the liquor we consume. Personally — JD on the rocks for me!
Tell us how 666 came to fruition and where do you think you can take it given it’s geographical location?
We will be 4 on the 26th of November, so we are getting there! It all started as a group of friends sat about with rooms full of records, stomping out music in our houses trying to avoid getting a punch on the nose from the neighbours when we next saw them (for keeping them up all weekend!). Eventually, we decided that it was about time we started our own night in the small town that we lived in or around at the time (Trowbridge). It all kicked off!! 4 years on it’s one of the strongest nights in the West and we are still striving to bring the best acts and shows to the West!
Now it’s just me doing the night, but I have a crew of production and friends etc. who are all involved.

Any thoughts on taking 666 on tour or are you happy where you are?
Well we have been doing some touring. Myself and our live act — Mat V (who is f*cking awesome by the way!!) have been playing and planning on playing all over. I have been over doing a DJ tour of Brazil and Poland so it’s all kicking off and getting very busy. I currently live in London as well as Bristol so I am seriously considering doing something in London. I will always be Westside till I die though!!
I imagine you must be pretty chuffed that Infected Mushroom will be playing the last UK set of 2005 at your event, is their style of dance music something you concentrate on in your music policy or could the clubbers expect something different?
Yeah it’s mint that we have wangled to get Infected in Bristol! Insane in-fact! I was really into Infected 2–3 years ago when they were doing BP Empire and Classical Mushroom. Their style has morphed and changed so much. I still feel that whatever style you want to call it, their music is still groundbreaking and very unique!
There is this whole undercurrent of snobbery in the psy trance scene that I find highly amusing! You get endless amounts of people saying “Ooooohhh they are not psy any more”, “Oooooh they sing” etc. etc. I think you are going to get this when anything or anyone gets very popular, especially in such a fickle scene like psy trance.
To answer your question — our music policy is good music, we don’t really have many constraints so yeah it will fit in. It will rock!
Infected Mushroom
I witnessed the Infected Mushroom set at Paradise City last year and it was pretty diverse musically, are their technical requirements going cause you any problems as a promoter or are you used to providing for live PAs as well as the usual DJ set-up?
Yeah, it’s going to be interesting having such a prolific band playing in such an intense and cosy venue! I can’t wait! There’s not many chances like this to see a band this big in a club of this size so the atmosphere is going to be intense! We are used to live acts and bands at 666 so I’m sure we will get by. There is quite a lot of things to consider in their live set such as live guitars and some live vocals, so I am sure some extra work will be needed! Nothing a few Stellas and an extra long sound check can’t fix (I hope!).
Psy trance seems to have had a bit of a renaissance recently, is that something you feel you’ve done your bit for or are you just jumping on an already rolling bandwagon?
I have been into psy trance for some time. But it wasn’t until the so called new wave of trance that I really started to get involved. I am very much into my production and sound quality, so the earlier trance or Goa didn’t really do it for me. These days trance is leading the way in digital wizardry! The crispness and sound quality of some of these acts are immense! I think this is why its gradually getting more widespread and people are getting a better knowledge of what it’s about. Before, I think people assumed it was for leather skinned Goa veterans who drink acid for breakfast and sing Kum By arrrr!

On a more personal note, I caught your set at the Bulldog Bash this year and was quite impressed with your style. How did that rank with other events you’ve played at and how weird was it to see big hairy arsed biker types loving the dance music and waving glow sticks about?
Yeah that was f*cking hilarious! Hairy arsed biker boys having it large to stomping psy trance . . . classic! It was a really bizarre gig to play, but all in all it was great. They seemed to love it. A lot of the people were asking me what kind of music was that, and what tunes they were as they had obviously never heard anything quite like it! I think I got wrongly drunk that night and ended up knocking down all the staging barriers and being a general nuisance.
So how did you get involved with that, don’t tell you’re a closet biker with a leather fetish?
Nah, I’m not a closet biker. I am a biker. I rode my Gran’s stepthrough Honda C90 there! Ave it!
So no ZZ Top loving background for you then. What or who would you say has had an influence on both your style and that of the 666 event?
I have no idea how to answer that really! To many to mention. Musically I think I grew up listening to a really eclectic collection. And in life my idol is Bruce Willis. But, when I grow up I still want to be a fireman.

Well there you go. A bit of a looney if ever I saw one but make no mistake, Bristol would be a duller and less interesting place for clubbers without Sean and the 666 crew. Cider may still be king in the West but there is one final word from a much older source.
