Tasty preview with Roosta

These days it’s hard to pick out those universal tunes that hard dance fans across the board love. Everyone’s got their own thing, their own pigeonhole to climb into while productions themselves, inevitably, are often forced into regurgitating yesterday’s sounds to truly stand out. A few years back, it was all different. There were certain original tracks, those instant anthems, that no matter what time, what place or what DJ, never failed to ramp up the atmosphere by those vital extra notches as whole crowds reacted in unison with energy, intensity and appreciation. ‘414 All’ by Roosta and Dynamic Intervention was one of those tracks. Caned by Lashes, Bunter, Farley, Wardman and BK, this steadily building surge of hoovers n’acid intensity exploded out of the ramshackle Brixton club to which it was a homage and became one of the nation’s most reliable hard NRG belters back in 01. To this day it remains a classic, so often dusted down to detonate today’s dancefloors at the likes of Insekt, Frantic and of course Tasty, while Roosta has since retained his place as one of the capital’s most loved hard dance DJs — a true London underground hard dance legend. As the charismatic DJ gets ready to blow the candles on four years of rockin his main room Tasty residency, we caught up with him to find out the latest in the world of Roosta and also to unveil some of what he’s got in store come November 12th…
You’ve been a name within the hard dance scene since it exploded in London at the end of last century. But how did it all begin for you and what were your first experiences of underground dance/rave culture? Any amusing stories to relay?
My first experiences of rave culture were going to raves like Dreamscape, Raindance etc when I was at school and being blown away by the size and vibe that was captured back in those days.
What first inspired you to seize the opportunity and try your hand at DJing? Was it a particular club experience that inspired you or were their particular DJs that always left you grinning on the dancefloor?
To be quite honest I’d always wanted to be a dj and going out clubbing and hearing certain djs fired me up because they just weren’t doing it right!!! Playing what they wanted to hear and not what the floor wanted.
Some of my most memorable early hard dancin’ experiences come direct from the huge Camden Palace dancefloor at Mind Over Matter whilst you and Skol banged out the end of night anthems. Were the Mind Over Matter parties your first big breaks and how did you first hook up with Skol?
I first hooked up with Skol down me local and we both started partying together and dj’ing together from there. Yeah I suppose M.O.M was my first big break and what a break ay, Camden Palace Oi Oi!!!!!!
On Saturday 12th November you’re playing the Tasty main room as you have done on countless occasions. What can fans expect from your DJ performance? How is the sound of DJ Roosta shaping up right now?
What can you expect hmmmm maybe some Sugarbabes with a little Coldplay to really get things crankin then a little Bach to chill things out at the end.
Your sets are always focused on energetic party music and your DJ presence is usually right behind it; jumping behind the decks and bearing a broad grin. How important do you think it is to keep the party vibes pegged up at max and do you think certain sections of the scene lose sight of what this is all about… a right fuckin havin it rave up!!
F**k yeah it’s important to keep the vibes pegged way up there, it really piss’s me of when I see these so called big djs behind the decks givin it the large looking like they got somewhere better to be. Muppets you know who you are.
What are the three tracks that have been doing the most damage for you in recent months?
To be honest I’ve been having a bit of mare finding new tracks that get me going so I’ve been pulling the classics out like the K y jelly babies ‘Access’ remix, D.I.P’s ‘Dreams’ remix and a few other old corkers and the floors are lovin it!!
What was your standout gig over the summer period and what made it so memorable?
Obvious answer this one, gotta be any one of the Tastys so far this year. Big Bill for me has got the formula just right, just enough rave and just enough club and all the vibe any dj could ask for.
Did you manage to sample the summer party vibes from DJ boxes in any foreign pastures?
Not this year. I did have plans for another Oz tour, but have put that on hold till Feb 06.
One of your longest standing and most infamous residencies is the legendary Just Groove Sunday all-nighters at the Club 414 with Skol. How did you first become involved with putting the Just Groove parties on and what sort of characters are left come 4 am on a Sunday morning? How would you describe the party to people who’d never been??
Cor you had to remind me didn’t ya over 10yrs now we’ve been doing Sunday nights at the 414, F**k !! It all started way back when we used to do a night called Freshly Squeezed up in the city which used to finish at 2 or 3 and we would then go down to the 414 and finish off down there, eventually we ended up moving the night down to the 414 and doing the whole night there. After a while one of the partners pulled out of Freshly and so the night became Just Groove.
Hmm characters left at 4am on a Monday morning F**kin hardcore characters!!. It still surprises me now the amount of people still going hard come Monday morning and at 6am still screaming for 1 more! So to all those that haven’t tried it yet that fancy finishing off the weekend properly get down there it might sound a bit scary but believe you me you’ll love it.
How does the weekly battering leave you come Monday morning? Does your DJing career pay for your general living or do you have to hit the 9-5 like us normal bods??
Exactly that battered especially since I’ve recently started a 9 to 5 so when you see me heading out the door of the 414 I’m heading straight to the office.
Many of older hard dance heads will recall the pulsing NRG of your classic 414 homage track ‘414 All’, written with midas man and unsung engineering wizard Mik ‘Dynamic Intervention’ Kree. An instant favourite with everyone from Lisa Lashes to Billy Bunter, were you shocked by the track’s huge underground success at the time and does it surprise you that people still love and request the track after all these years?
Yes and Yes I couldn't have asked for more I really didn’t expect it to be so big, Mik Kree was a great help on that track and countless others and you defo hit the nail on the head when you say un sung hero the guy is a legend.
A couple of years back you hit a real purple patch in the studio unloading a stream of uplifting hard trance efforts on X-Cite and more ass-shakin groove number as D-Tek on the party techno label Atomic. Have you been busy in the studio over recent months? If so what sort of styles have you been concentrating on?
I’ve taken some time out of the studio over the last few months due to the dreaded 9 to 5 but believe you me I’ll be back in there as soon as, I’m absolutely gagging for it!!
With the rise in download culture and the fall of vinyl sales, many are predicting a nearby end for the trusty 12” as digital and CD formats take over the DJ booth once and for all. What percentage of your sets comprises of vinyl and does the shift in format concern you or is it merely the logical progression?
My sets are a bit of mix between the 2 but I don’t see the change as anything to worry about, the new cd decks are pushing boundaries for us djs. Creatively you can do all sorts of wonderful things with them my only concern is that most djs aren’t using these new functions and are just using them as decks nothing more.
For all the talk of doom though, the hard dance scene is still rockin packed parties every week… why do you think it has remained such a vibrant buzzin scene while others have gone through dips over recent years?
I think we are going through a dip at the moment but it just seems to have cleared out some of the un-desirables the ones that were just in it to coin in on it and in my eyes that’s a good thing. I think the scene has held strong because of a core of true lovers of the music that don’t care if they’re not making as much money as they used to when things where good.
And when you’re not battering your brain cells with pounding hard dance kick drums what else are you listening to? Are you partial to a bit of breaks or even funky house or is it pure pop and The Sugarbabes all the way?
Beside Westlife and the like I’m right into a bit of drum n bass, absolutely lovin the Pendulum album also feelin a bit of hip hop fiddy cent, the game holla!!!! All I can say is thank god for mp3 players you can have all ya shit with ya everywhere you go it’s great.
