A new chapter in London clubbing — Hidden Launch Party preview with Tania von Pear

It’s what the whole of the London club scene is talking about. Seemingly out of nowhere has come the news that the people behind Frantic have taken over the former Studio 33 in Vauxhall, South London, and have spent bucketloads of time and money on creating what will soon become one of the capital’s hottest club venues. This Friday October 21st sees the Industry Launch Party for this brand-spanking new venue, and features a host of London’s finest house and breaks DJs. One such top spinner is the fantastic Tania von Pear of Going Places.
Over the past few years Tania has established herself as one of the hottest names on the London house music scene, with her own forward-thinking night Going Places regularly rocking the capital with its flawless selection on hot house talent. She has also been busying herself with other activities such as running a record label, doing a radio show, and playing in various different parts of the world. She is also part of the impressive Sedition DJs roster alongside fellow stars such as Cheshire Catz, Anil Chawla, and Tom Real. You can see for yourself on her website www.lovelypear.com that she has been involved in the scene for quite a while now, and has enjoyed success working in many different aspects of it.
Tania’s sound will be ideal for the launch of this ubercool new dancery — sexy house music that is all about getting people dancing and nothing else. But before you get down and dirty to her naughty beats, it’s only polite that you find out a bit about her first...
Is that your real name then? If not where did it come from? It’s awesome!
Umm, no not quite! My real name is Tania von Berg which is German… although for the record, I AM DEFINITELY NOT GERMAN! “von Berg” means “from the mountain”… like Heidi I guess!? Tania von Pear came about as I used to be part of the Pear DJs and wanted to keep the Pear association.
Where were you brought up and what are your earliest memories of music? Was it always something you felt passionately about?
I was brought up all over the place, literally, no real roots. In terms of music, I guess most DJs have a link with music… I play the piano and used to play the clarinet. The most musical member of my family is definitely my Dad, he used to play piano in jazz bars when he was younger and has the gift of being able to pick up any instrument and play it although he can’t read music at all. My mum listened to Rick Astley, Whitney and Julio Iglesias when I was younger… nuff said!
Did you start DJing as a hobby or was it with a view to bigger and better things? Did you instantly think that this was your ideal career?
Noooo, definitely for a hobby… but it’s damn addictive once you start! To start with I constantly pissed my mates off going on their decks all day, every day instead of going to college! Ummm, an ideal career is a difficult one to answer, I don’t think it’s a career for life…just look at Danny Rampling retiring! However I have been places I never would have dreamt of, like travelling on the Trans-Siberian express between gigs in Russia, plus meeting some great people. Some them are good friends now, but I would also balance that with the fact that trying to be healthy can be really hard as food and sleep stuff go out the window — but hey, it’s a small sacrifice!
How have you progressed as a DJ over the years? Have you always stuck with the same style for example of have you had periods of playing different genres to usual?
I have always stuck with house music… it’s what I truly love. Thankfully house music does include a lot and has definitely evolved, if it didn’t it would die. But, for example, I remember back when the garage sound started to come in and then branched off into UK garage… I didn’t go down that route and have never been tempted by styles that start within house then branch off. However I like to include a few tasters of other genres in my sets that fit into my style… like the odd breakbeat track (as it makes people bounce around on the dancefloor) plus a reworked classic too (something everyone knows in a new style) but my foundation is house music.
Which producers and labels are you currently supporting? Where do you get your tracks from anyway?
OK… hmmm this is always a difficult one as I tend to seek out rockin’ tunes and like producers rather than play everything off certain labels so I guess if I can say producers it would be Martijn Ten Velden and Lee Coombs.
Tell us about your night Going Places. Where can it be found and what does it do?
My night Going Places has its HQ at Turnmills and the club has been instrumental in building our night but we have done parties from Denmark to Poland! The idea is that Going Places is “an adventure in international house music” as we profile a different country each party and seek out the hottest unsung talent from that country to fly in and play! There are so many great DJs out there and it can be impossible for them to get bookings in London as they are unknown in the UK. That doesn’t make them any less talented and often they are huge stars in their own country so we bring them to the UK first and put on a party with fresh music and DJs that you won’t here anywhere else.
Turnmills is a club which receives many mixed opinions, both good and bad. What are your feelings on the venue? What makes it so good?
Turnmills is the only club in London that has a truly family background… after all it is Tall Paul aka Paul Newman’s residency, run by his brother Danny Newman and was started by their father John. This makes the whole place have a unique atmosphere and really a great venue to work with… it’s not just a business to them and it shows. I love Room 2 the best as that’s where we run Going Places and I think it’s the most perfect space (but hey I would say that!). It’s the massive sound system, low ceilings, seating around the outside and bar area easily accessible that makes it almost a club within a club. Sometimes I don’t even leave that room all night!
Which other venues do you rate highly? Where would you love to play more than anywhere else?
Oooh you ask hard questions! Other good venues… well Sobremonte in Argentina was AMAZING. Deep Dish, Digweed and Sasha all play there and the atmosphere was unreal… just have a look at the picture!
I’d like to play Fabric’s main room so I can play to a crowd all standing on the “bodysonic dancefloor!” I reckon I could have some proper fun cutting in and out some wobbly basslines!
Which special guests have you had at Going Places over the years? Who is on your current wishlist?
Well, highlights have to be our guests in September… the awesome Hernan Cattaneo, Satoshi Tomiie and Aldrin plus we had Tony Senghore on his debut UK performance for our opening night back in 2003. But as I said Going Places is focussed on bringing DJs/names you won’t have heard of but when we next take over the whole club my votes would be James Zabiela, Max Graham, Danny Howells, Slacker and maybe even Tenaglia but ultimately… Coxy is the man!
This Friday October 21st sees you playing at the launch of a brand new nightclub in Vauxhall — Hidden. What have you heard about or seen of this place?
I am well up for Friday as I have really good memories of the venue when it was Studio 33! I want to check out the garden as I don’t think I’ve seen that (could be wrong… as I probably had my spangled lenses in… there is a garden isn’t there?!?) It’s gonna be good one for me too as I am playing alongside one of my favourite DJs and good friend too — Tom Real! I know there are lots of my mates coming as everyone is talking about it on DSI and it’s going to be TOP night of the usual crazy stuff, plus it’s the launch night so everything will definitely get out of hand… start as you mean to go on, that’s what I reckon! Yeeaaaah!
What will be hearing from you on the night?
Proper house music: pumping, funk fuelled and with a definite tuff edge plus a few breakbeat bouncers and the odd vocal you might recognise in a new style! I want people to dance, sweat and generally ‘ave it… as I will be!
Do you think this venue will be a worthy addition to the London nightlife scene? Is an 800-capacity multi-room club something that will fit in nicely do you think?
I think the more the merrier, it proves that London’s club scene is vibrant and blossoming…sod all those tossers who write for big corporate newspapers who are constantly banging on about it being dead! As far as I am concerned, it is dead for them and thank god… we don’t want them in the clubs! Back to the underground and the proper party people!
Did you ever visit the club previously in its Studio 33 days?
Ummmm, yes I did… last time I went there was for an after hours party with a bunch of girls. We arrived about 7am rather the worse for wear and were waiting for our mates to turn up to play in the house room who were late arriving… it’s was all getting a bit shady and some of the girls were starting to fade. So we did dares to keep things moving ‘til they arrived (I can’t divulge the details for various reasons!) Anyway, it was one of the funniest nights ever as I watched my mates reeking havoc around this club with some unsuspecting clubbers so hopefully they won’t remember me and not let me in!
What do you do with yourself aside from DJing?
I work with my business partner Esther on Pear Music and Pear Press. We sign artists to our label and promote clients to the press. We run Pear Music Live parties around London and also I do reviews for M8 Magazine and have a radio show on Ministry of Sound…oh hang on that’s DJing again…busy bee anyway!
Do you feel house music is in a healthy state at the moment? How would you define a healthy state anyway? Immensely popular or enjoying underground success?
I think dance music is finally coming full circle and going back to what it was all about back in the day (or so I heard!). Enjoying underground success would get my vote… I don’t want it to be mainstream, it’s for us and us only! And long may it remain so!
