Polysexual South Preview: Interview with Shan

On Saturday 18 July London welcomes the third Polysexual South. As usual it will display fabulous visuals, unbelievable performers and present a stellar line-up of DJs ready to dish up an inspiring night of music. The technically astute Shan appears to form part of this line-up, so I caught up with him to ask about his career and talk about the technical skills which have marked him out from the crowd.
How old are you, and where are you from?
I’m 22, and I’m from ‘oop norf’ in Leeds.
How did you get into DJing and what have been the highlights of your career?
I’ve loved The Prodigy from their early days and went to see them perform at the V Festival in Leeds in ’97. Carl Cox was on in the dance arena so I decided to check him out to see what it was all about and saw that DJing was far more than just playing two records. The whole concept fascinated me and I set about learning more about the music and how to mix it.
Playing last set to a capacity Judgement Sundays in Ibiza has to be up there as one of the highlights so far, it was the last weekend in August, the island was at it’s peak, and it felt like I knew half the club, there were so many familiar faces as well as all my mates. The summer festivals are always a privilege to be involved in too, I took my parents to Creamfields last year as playing the main arena was definitely a moment I had to share with those closest to me.

You’re playing at Polysexual South on Saturday, but you also play at Polysexual at Air. What is the Polysexual crowd like and why do you think it was voted the best club in the UK at the Hard Dance Awards?
The Polysexual crowd are great! When I first started playing out I used to play every weekend in Birmingham so the city almost feels like a second home to me. They’re always hugely receptive to whoever’s playing and there’s always a sense of fun about the crowd. Polysexual as a club night in its own right has taken massive steps over the last couple of years, going from solely Bank Holiday events, to hosting the Nitrogen Room on Godskitchen nights, to occupying their own Saturday nights at AIR and hosting their own arena at the Global Gathering festival, so there’s no surprise they’ve acquired a lot of support and been awarded for their efforts.
You seem to have a biggest following up North. You were voted by 4clubbers.net as the “Best Up and Coming DJ” for the last two years running.
There’s no doubt that the support 4clubbers.net gave me early on kick started my DJing, and that my residency with Goodgreef has helped hugely in building my following around these parts. It’s such a prominent club and great to be a part of, getting stuck in and involved with events such as Creamfields, the MEN Arena, the NEC Arena, all which Goodgreef have been hugely involved in. All the people involved are now good friends and great to work with.
You’ve appeared alongside many top DJs. Who do you aspire to be most like?
I don’t really aspire to be like anyone in terms of ‘wow, I want to be like them or I want to DJ like that’, as I think individuality and originality are the key to being successful as a DJ, and the whole reason I broke into the scene was because I was doing something a bit different at the time and trying out accapellas over hard dance which no-one had done before. But they do say that often a DJ is a mixture of influences of their favourite DJs, so if there was a factory that produced custom-made DJs my ideal combination would have the spontaneity and party-attitude of Fatboy Slim, the techno-prowess, 3-deck mixing ability and stage presence of Carl Cox, and the antics and technical ability of all the Scratch Perverts combined!!!
What’s on the cards for Shan for the rest of 2005?
For the moment, I’m looking forward to the summer festival season with Godskitchen’s Global Gathering’s first 2-day event and the Planet Love festival in Northern Ireland. I’ll be going out to Ibiza at the end of August to play at a little shindig that Jay Pidgeon’s going to be doing a few of on the island. I’ve just started getting my head down into production, teaching myself in my spare time as I spent quite a bit on gear earlier this year, so I’m hoping to be able to dedicate more time to that and spend many a late night tearing my hair out. Finally, if I feel I need a break from all that I might treat myself and head down the road to the Carling Festival this summer and check out the Foo Fighters!

You mix mainly on CDJ1000s and are known for sets which layer accapellas. Do you think DJing would have got boring without this new technology?
That’s true, recently I’ve found myself mixing more and more on the CDJs without even realising it. 90% of upfront material now comes through on CD so you find your record box becoming emptier and CD wallet filling out more and more. I’m not sure DJing would have got boring without the invention of the CDJ-1000s, as people are always finding new ways of using what’s in front of them. Of course I’m always for new technology and I love all the capabilities that come with it but if you ever feel vinyl is getting boring all you need to do is check out a performance of the Scratch Perverts before they incorporated the CDJs into their setup and you’ll wonder how you ever doubted it.
You’ve played internationally quite a bit. What’s the best bit about DJing abroad?
The different cultures you get to experience whilst there. Also in places like Eastern Europe partying to electronic music is still quite new to some of them, so the enthusiasm of experiencing something new and exciting is still there, like I’m guessing it was in the late-80s/early 90s over here.
You were described by Mixmag as a “Mini Future Hero”, What did you think of this title?
There’s no doubt it’s up there as one of the highlights of my career being recognised on that scale for what I do. It was quite surreal seeing myself in it for the first time, when only a few years earlier I was buying it to read up on my favourite DJs and clubs!
