Twisted Spice preview: interview with new Twisted promoter Hannah Willis

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 01-06-05 15:24

Over the last eight years Twisted has been famous for its fun flyers and fabulous tongue-in-cheek themes ranging from Twisted 54 to Nu School, Twisted Ice to the one you either loved or hated - Twisted Marmite. June's chapter is no different as it pays homage to those five famous femme fatales of pop The Spice Girls - but these are no ordinarly pop princesses as it replaces Baby, Ginger, Posh, Scary and Sporty with Trevor Mclachlan, Lee Haslam, Steve Blake, Matt EJ and Nick Sentience.

Of course it's all a little bit of fun, but it totally encapulates the wonderful hedonistic and cheery party fun that Twisted represents. Twisted also welcomes a new promoter in the form of Hannah Willis who takes over as the promoter of one of London's longest running hard dance parties. I had a quick chat with her about her new role to ask what was in store for the south London party.

You’ve taken over from Kate Lynch to lead the helm of the popular monthly party Twisted. How are you rising to the challenge and are you going to be making any changes over the next few months?

That’s right. I took over from Kate in May. I was sad to see her go as she was a good friend and we had worked together for a while. I have just done my first Twisted Party and feel things have started well. I’m really looking forward to getting really stuck in to making Twisted a clubbers' party.

Twisted is known for having fun flyers which parody brands and concepts. What has been your favourite theme and what fun ideas can we look forward to in the near future?

My favourite flyer has got to be the Cadbury’s Crème egg for the Easter party a few years ago. I have always loved the novelty flyers that Twisted has produced over the years. I aim to keep with that tradition and I think I am off to a good start with Twisted Spice.

How long have you been involved in the club industry, and where did you first go clubbing?

I’ve been involved in the club industry for about four years. I grew up with much more commercial clubs while I was at school and college. My first real taste for dance music was while I was at University. That was Slinky at The Opera House in Bournemouth.

How did you get into promoting and DJ Management and how does it differ from what you were doing before? Would you recommend it?

I got involved with promoting through a friend helping out with Mind over Matter and a few other parties. When Mind Over finished I started working with Twisted and Euphoria.

As for DJ management, well I kind of fell into that. I used to work for a corporate bank so the two industries differ immensely. The two roles do have similarities, the main one being that they are both majorly people orientated. I would recommend DJ management for people with a real passion, but it is a lot of hard work as well as being very rewarding.

You also work for Tidy Management alongside Simon Eve. What does the job of a DJ manager do, and how is different from a DJ booking agency?.

DJ booking agencies basically just take bookings for their DJs. As managers, we work a lot more than just bookings. This can vary from eflyers, arranging tours, promoting updated music styles to organising sponsorship for the artists and radio deals. It’s comprehensively more involved than a booking agency.

What are the skills you need to be DJ Manager would you say? What are the main highlight and lowlights of the job?

Patience, determination and a thick skin. You are dealing with people and people’s careers. Sometimes things can get quite heated. You have to be able to talk and relate to people in different situations. Highlights of the job are definitely the people I work with. Lowlights are the hours.

How important do you think publicity is these days to be a successful DJ/Producer?

Publicity plays a huge part in building and maintaining careers nowadays. You can’t just be good at what you do and hope you get noticed. It’s all about marketing yourself and your music in the best way you can.

What do you do in your spare time?

In the spare time from DJ managing I promote Twisted. With the time left after that I like to spend time with my boyfriend and friends. I became an Auntie for the first time at Christmas so I try and go and see my nephew as much as I can. I also ride and teach horse riding whenever I can.

Which DJs and producers are you inspired by at the moment?

Amber D. I have real respect for the girl. She has worked hard and is now becoming a much sort after DJ. Even as her popularity and demand increases she’s kept her feet on the ground and is still a clubbers’ DJ. And, the Edison Factor. I love what they are doing with their live show. James and Matt are really striving to push musical boundaries and bring clubbers something different.

Have you got anything special lined-up for Twisted Spice and can we expect any of the DJs to dress up like the flyer?

All I will say is that it will be colourful! As for the guys as girls, you will have to come and have a look for yourself.

And finally, who is your favorite spice DJ.

Defiantly Baby – Trev looks great in knee high socks!!
