NASTYDIRTYSEXMUSIC’s Tim Sheridan is our Beadle About.... he reviews Playtime

So I’ve been playing all over for many, many years and I realise it’s 7... YES... 7! (count em) years since I had a Friday night with nothing to do in London. I am pretty hard to please as you can imagine when it comes to time off. Say you are a graphic designer and you have a first day off for years in your career what do you do? Wash the car? Go to the Tate Modern? Spend all day and night watching someone draw? Parts of my many tasks at nastydirtysexmusic are promoter’s tasks, although we don’t book DJs (don't need to! it’s OURS wooo) I think it’s time for us to look at like-minded clubs and hold hands with them in a loving way...
Smokin Jo and I sat down and first tried to draw up a list of possible guest DJs. We came up with 3! Then I suggested we modify the idea and have guest clubs. Unfortunately we created nastydirty because we couldn’t find any clubs exactly like we wanted, so we made one. In the interim period since we started it has become apparent that there is a small but distinct movement or sub-genre going on. Let's call it ‘filth’ or ‘filthy house’. It’s electro, but only when it funks, it’s house, but only when it makes you screw up your face in disgust. It’s everything that's good and rocks. It’s the Zen genre that is every type and none. As with many great things, all over the world people are having amazing original ideas without contact but in synchronicity with others. The internet brings them together in a new way never seen before. It seems to me it’s time to bridge the gaps between these Oasis nights in the vast desert of the dull and get together. So I started looking, listening and smelling a little... until I change aftershaves.
Mike Monday
One club stood out as destination number one. It’s the Music... always innit. Mike Monday was a new sound coming out of London and I did hear his tunes and lo! They were good. When outstanding music is produced there is always a story behind it so I called, invited myself rather rudely to dinner and got on a plane for my night off in London.
Just a bite and a chat, just a bite and chat, just a bite and a chat I told myself constantly... denial, denial, denial...
I met the two personalities behind Playtime on London’s throbbing Upper Street. Naturally they were struggling to try to pull a 2 metre tall sign out of a 1.5 metre long taxi. Magic! Good start. It’s a good sign (gggroan! DO forgive readers). BigDaddyG was neither large of frame nor had kids in tow, but his character was gigantic and effusive. Mike was equally charming. We dined under the shadow of the sign and got on immediately. It seems like every person behind something very cool and underground that breaks out into success seems to be really ace people. Nice coincidence if indeed it is one. G was forced to do the traditional bad-hotel tango when guest Phonique from Berlin (you know ‘The Red Dress’ by phonique is the best tune out right now!) was met by the usual "we don't have a reservation for you Sir no" despite the amazing feat of booking it twice to make sure. One day some bright spark will open a hotel for DJs in London and make a mint. If only any of you readers were property developers I’d go into partnership with you... we’d clean up. You read it here first lawyers! G went off to be the organised one. I have that dubious title too so my heart went out to him. I was left with Mike and after about four pints we got onto the topic of God which usually takes about 15 with me. I like him already and I’ve not even got to the club.
Then... Egg bound we were. I have a love/hate thing with the Egg. As I rarely go out I’ve only been a couple of times and found the upstairs/downstairs layout a bit too much for my old bones. I need a Stannah Stairlift. It seems to always take a long time to fill, always from the bottom up and tonight was true to that form. Possibly that adds a nice build/tension to the night.
The Cheshire Catz
First up were the Cheshire Cats. Two chaps I had heard something about, but yet to experience and I wasn’t let down by their rep. There was a great unity of sound but the genres were diverse. Sound familiar? Been my modus operandi for decades you youngsters, you. Move as much as possible in variety while playing with the line between flow and mash up. Always stay on the side of flow though my young paduan learner, for to mash is the way of the dark side..... The cats were a joy to groove to, but more of them later.....
Just a bite and a chat, just a bite and chat, just a bite and a chat I continued to tell myself constantly... denial, denial, denial...
I was in all-new research mode, and then the chipper conscripts from Sgt Major Winstanley’s all-girl platoon of combat photographers arrived to relieve me. Many thanks to Ilana and Beth for their sterling work under fire. The night was building. It was a twisted pleasure to see two DJs of such calibre as BigDaddy and Mike running around trying to fix things and sort out guests. I’m not the only one then! Just a bite and a chat, just a bite and chat, just a bite and a chat... denial, denial, denial... OOps. I slipped and something fell in my mouth and suddenly it all went out the window.
I hope you enjoyed what I wrote above as it’s the last bit of sense I made. I think after 20-odd years at it I’m so conditioned to turning into a performing nitwit at the stroke of midnight it’s as inevitable as my denial. I started to join in and proper. I don’t remember much except G was ace, Phonique was tall and Mike was everything I expected and was so good I even remember. I ended up an embarrassing shitty mess and was saved 12 hours later by Dan Cheshire Cat and his after-hours tunes, revived enough to stumble to a cab but not before YOINKing his CD.
My destination? Not bed but Zurich.... where I was due to play. Next thing I remember was being wheeled through arrivals half asleep into the arms and stunned faces of the promoters. Apparently the airport crew took pity on me because I looked (adopt Swiss accent) “Like a liddle bunch ov sickness.”
Your roving reporter
Thing is, if that’s what it’s like when I go to Playtime off duty, what’s it going to be like when I play!?
Tim is at nastydirtysexmusic on Saturday. Bring your noise and digital camera, all is being recorded for a global mix CD release and your portraits will grace the inside cover.
Tim debuts at Playtime at the Egg on Friday May 6th for their 3rd birthday with Switch, Geddes, Paco, Mike Monday and Big Daddy G. The day the general election results are announced!
