Sisters on the Scene - Interview with Claire-Voyant and Lollipop
Reported by Donna Morrey

Claire-voyant and Lollipop are DJs in their own right who have added another dimension to their already satisfying music careers – these techno sisters have become a twosome on the decks.
They began as any other DJ does – mixing the same old groove in their worn out vinyl. They spent time comparing tunes and playing one off against the other until they eventually progressed enough to develop a style and a reputation in their own right. Then, two years ago they decided to play out for the first time as a double act – the only two sister DJs on the scene.
|
Their first gig was at a Torque boat party in the summer of 2003; their next one will be at Torque's fifth birthday party in the Techno Tunnel in Sindrome, north west London, where they’re looking forward to showing us just how well they react to the other’s tunes. “We used to live together and found it pretty easy playing b2b”, says Lollipop, “it works well and we’re family which is wickedly satisfying for us.”
Lollipop, real name Aimee, has been playing for three years and at 26 is the younger of the two sisters. She tells how she has developed her ‘techno tummy and is now on a full phat techno diet’. “Which is great, ‘coz techno is so dynamic and is becoming the future of our music,” she says.
Claire-voyant, real name Claire, first got behind the decks around four years ago. She plays high-energy, hard groovy techno with an occasional trancey lining that compliments Lollipop’s style. Lollipop plays a darker and funkier kind of techno.
|
“It’s music that drives us,” says Claire-voyant, “… the absolute high of making music on the trot and people getting uplifted by it.”
They both appreciate playing individually but Claire admits that playing b2b with her sister doesn’t compare to playing with some DJ she’s never met: “Playing b2b with somebody is a difficult thing because you don’t know each other’s style. If you haven't played together before it can really affect the set,” says Claire. “But we know each other quite well so I think that helps a lot. We know what we are about.”
Lollipop is quite excited by the b2b project: “Playing alone you only get to ‘get down’ in between mixes but playing back to back with another good techno DJ such as Claire, you get to roll between the decks and the dance floor, woo hay!” she says.
With no other sister act known on the scene, these two individuals have an advantage of appeal in that they are a novelty and they know what’s what in musical terms.
But do they think it’s easier to progress as females in this male-dominated business?
“Being female wouldn't be a bad thing,” says Claire, “I think it would help but you would have to have the talent to back it up. There is still a lot of competition out there.” She admits to thinking that guys find it easier to pretend to know what they are doing. “They have a natural don’t-give-a-sh*t attitude and it’s all about the attitude. You need to show that you’re confident. I think that’s one of the reasons why there are more guy DJs than girls,” she laughs as she continuously swivels from left to right on her black, leather office chair. Aimee chooses to be a little more neutral in her reply, believing everything takes hard work. She says: “If you want something you have got to just get on with it, boys and girls. The fact that myself and Claire are working and developing as professional DJ’s has helped [our progress] and I believe it will continue to help. The key to staying afloat in this industry is to stay current and up-to-date, which Claire-voyant and Lollipop do.”
|
They both promote their other interests, Claire’s being Torque – a hard dance and techno party in north west London; and Aimee’s being Warped on Wednesdays – an offshoot of Torque, in a smaller room. These are used as an outlet for them to play regular sets.
When they play out together the sisters find themselves getting pretty fired up in response to the other’s tunes. “Though we've got similar styles there's a uniqueness to Aimee's style that will bring out a different bit of my music as well and it’s good to play off that,” says Claire, “it’s good to see how people share your enthusiasm and it’s fun watching people get charged up.”
The UK is the Matrix of Hard Dance Music and London boasts some of the top clubs and parties on the scene. But the big club scene doesn’t seem to impress them that much. For Aimee, it’s more about the music being played than where it’s at.
She says her ideal night would be “on the dance floor in front of DJs such as Marco Bailey, Cristian Varrela, Mauro Picotto and Umek … to name a few,” adding that as a DJ her perfect night would be playing at a party with these guys.
|
Claire likes the comfort factor of techno music. She explains: “This music is good mid-week in a bar somewhere, as well as cranked up on a Friday night. I’d like to play the Coronet, in Elephant and Castle, again but to a massive crowd. And the Fridge, Brixton, of course, it’s legendary.”
It turns out they would like to travel with their music. They like the sun and the thought of playing in the heat appeals to them. As does going back to their roots.
“Ibiza, I guess, would be one of my ideal places to play,” says Claire, “Funky Techno and Techno is a lot more travel-able than Hard Dance at 150 kilometres an hour. And Funky Techno, though it’s a harder-edge style than the more commercial stuff played in Ibiza, I think would go down very well there.”
|
Aimee says: “DJ-ing is something I thoroughly and naturally enjoy, so I’d like to play wherever it takes me! Ultimately, taking this experience to our home town in South Africa … Cape Town would be wicked”.
Claire agrees: “Cape Town – on the beach. Taking it home would be great. The real success story would be for both of us to play back in Cape Town.”
She starts the sentence seriously then laughs as she adds: “[promoted] on a huge billboard ... in the centre of town!”.
Check them out in the Techno Tunnel, Sindrome, at the Spotted Dog in Willesden. London NW10. Saturday 29th January 2005. 6pm 'til 2am. £10 on the door.
