WiLDCHiLD Vs PaSSion Preview: The Residents Square Up

Reece Elliot, Marc West, Little Gem and Andy Bagguley are all residents of two of the promotions taking part in this August Bank Holiday battle at WiLDCHiLD Vs PaSSion @ Heaven. Reece and Gem are batting for London whizzkids WiLDCHiLD while Marc and Andy take the reins for the northern legend that is PaSSion. We caught up with them in their final week of preparation to see how their intense training sessions were coming along…
Marc West
Let the battle commence…
Reece, any tricks up your sleeve to make sure you blow these PaSSion boys out the water?
I'm just gonna go in there all guns blazing, taking no prisoners. I’m remaining completely focused on the job in hand that is stepping up to those hallowed turntables and rocking the fuck out of that wicked main arena!
Marc, you’ve been resident at PaSSion now for 4½ Years. How do you feel you’re going to fare against WiLDCHiLD home grown, Mr Reece Elliot?
I’ve played down at Heaven before for Passion and thought the atmosphere and reaction I got from the crowd was superb and I enjoyed every minute of it!!! It really is like one massive party and no matter who is on, the crowd are brilliant and generate such a good atmosphere, so I cannot wait to come back down there this weekend and play!!!.
Gem, you’re batting for the Harder generation, how do you reckon these wussy trance boys are going to do against you?
Not well at all!!! They’ll be wishing they stayed at home once I’m finished, he he!! I’m sure they’ll give it they’re best shot, but I’ve got a particularly lethal set planned, so they shouldn’t start celebrating just yet…
Andy, being the newest kid on the block from the PaSSion stable, do you feel you have something to prove?
I always like to play my best to “prove a point” in every set I play. There are so many DJ’s out there now that we need to be on top of our game to stay where we are or progress further. So yeah.. I’ll show ‘em all up!!
Andy Bagguley
On a more serious tip…
Reece, what do you feel a resident brings to a promotion?
I feel the resident of a club has a very clear role in getting to know the regulars at the events and generally being an extension of that audience when it comes to getting behind the decks, playing the records that they want to hear. A strong resident DJ team in my eyes is hugely important. If you look @ Passion with former ressie JFK + their current crop with Marc West and Andy Bagguley – Gatecrasher who over the years idolised Matt Hardwick & Scott Bond – Frantic with Phil Reynolds, Guffy – these DJs have helped shape the musical direction of these huge superclub brands.
Marc, being at PaSSion for the time that you have, how do you feel the club has evolved and what part have the residents played in this?
Obviously the residents of any club are very important and Passion in my opinion have and always have had quality residents which along with the amazing atmosphere which is created by the clubbers makes Passion one of the best nights out in the country!!!! Some of the events over the years at the club have been simply amazing, club classics being my personal favourite and as a resident, to play to such a great crowd is a privilege!!
Gem, how important to you feel a resident is to a club, and what do they symbolise?
In my opinion a resident is the back bone of a promotion – they’re very important. It’s someone for the regulars to get to know and feel confident that they are always going to deliver and play the stuff the clubbers favour. They symbolise the actual promotion in a way, and I feel that once a clubber is familiar with a particular resident DJ, they will offer absolute support as they always know what they’re going to get.
Andy, can you tell us how you got the residency and how does it feel to be an integral part of the one of the biggest promotions in the country.
I got picked up by Passion in 2002 due to the massive local support I have (I’ve lived there for 16 years) and the support I received on the Passion message board at the time. I was also Resident DJ at the Passion pre-bar next door for 3 years before that as well. I think the growing amount of gigs I was gathering around the country also made Passion realise they had someone on their doorstep who they could utilise.
Reece, you’ve played for PaSSion on the sacred home turf that is The Emporium. What was the highlight for you there?
3 huge factors that make Passion 1 of the greatest Trance events in the WORLD!
1-Fantastic venue
2-Superb, up for it crowd. They are friendly, have plenty of energy and give it up for every single DJ! This makes for an unbeatable atmosphere.
3-Some of the best resident DJs in the country are the essential backbone to this club
Reece Elliot
Marc, after playing for WiLDCHiLD back in February when they had Round 1 of this Versus saga, what were your first impressions of the promotion?
I thought the promotion of the event was excellent from the flyers that were created to all the press on message boards and online etc, which made the event definitely one not to miss!!, All the promotion definitely paid off because it was one hell of a party and one I wont be forgetting for some time that’s for sure!!!
Gem, PaSSion have one of the most notoriously ‘Passionate & Dedicated’ crowds in the country. In your opinion, what was it that created this and how have they maintained it?
Yeah, the Passion crowd are extremely dedicated to the promotion, which I think is wicked! I think when you have a promotion as strong as Passion, it’s inevitable that clubbers are going to be with it for a long time. I think that people have become so dedicated to it because the promotion in itself has been so consistent throughout all the years and people have become accustomed to their superb line-ups, quality resident DJ’s, wicked venue and amazing atmosphere. It truly is a superclub in it’s own right!
Andy, even though WiLDCHiLD are still relatively new compared to PaSSion, they seem to have grasped an audience with the same enthusiasm for the promotion. How do you feel they can keep this momentum and follow the likes of PaSSion into peoples hearts?
Reece and the team have captured a magic with Wildchild in the excellent Line-ups and his great enthusiasm to make it a success. I really believe that Wildchild will grow and grow into “Superclub” status within the very near future!!
Little Gem
Quick Fire Round…
Tune you’re most remembered for?
Reece: My Fingers Burnt remake of Flaming June (Frozen Feburary) + Rockstarz “Voiceless”
Marc: The Roc Project ft Tina Arena “Never” (Filterheadz Rmx)
Gem: I have a tendency to start with DBD ‘Mechanical Fate’ which always goes down a treat!
Andy: Err… probably “Oakenfold – Southern Sun (Tiesto Remix)
Classic you always drop?
Reece: System F – Out Of The Blue
Marc: Legato – Digital Blonde!!
Gem: I try and vary it, but I’m dropping Storm ‘Time To Burn’ on Sunday… oops, I shouldn’t have told everyone that!
Andy: Binary Finary..any mix.. favourite dance tune of all time!
Name one of the regulars?
Reece: Joe Black
Marc: Andy Smith
Gem: Bubbles!
Andy: lol..so many. Err….. Huggy B
Naughtiest thing you’ve done in the DJ box?
Reece: Too rude to mention on this website. Come and see me on Sunday and I MIGHT spill the beans!
Marc: Haven’t really done anything naughty behind the decks, normally a good lad!! Although myself & Andy did consume 2 bottles of vodka behind the decks on a back2back night once which was quite a night to say the least!!!
Gem: Yep, mine’s pretty much the same as Marcs… not quite two bottles of vodka, but a hefty bottle of my beloved wine!!! I couldn’t possibly mention the rest in public!!
Andy: Nothing really filthy but I have been known to bring a record bag half full of beer for myself instead of records!!!
Drink the bar staff know is your ‘usual’?
Reece: Jack Daniels & Coke!
Marc: Vodka & Redbull or Budweiser
Gem: Vodka & Lemonade or Wine!
Andy: Probably Red Bull
And finally… who’s the best resident??!!
Reece: Controversial, controversial! I’m gonna sit on the fence and say we have our own qualities. Marc & Andy are absolute legends @ Passion, Little Gem is absolutely rocking it at the mo & I couldn’t be happier playing to the faithful in the main arena @ WiLDCHiLD!
Marc: I’m sure we can all discuss that over a beer on Sunday when were all at Heaven cant we!!! LOL!!!!
Gem: Hmmm, well I can’t exactly blow my own trumpet and say me, so I’ll have to go with the other one from my camp… Reece Elliot!
Andy: Me.. obviously… or Marc West if I can’t vote myself!!
