LISATIME PREVIEW: Interview with Frantic's Will Paterson & Polysexuals Madders!

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 07-07-04 15:17

The UK Hard Dance scene is geographically dominated by land mark clubs. From Slinky in the South, to Colors in the far North! Two of the UKs current dominators are the all embracing Polysexual and London's unstoppable Frantic. Their respective head honchos have had a distinguished career. Frantic's Will Paterson started his love affair with Hard Dance in August 1997 when Frantic was conceived as a private birthday party.....550 events later and Frantic are about to celebrate 7 years at their 12th 4,500 capacity HardHouse Academy! Polysexual's Madders needs little introduction. Before a well reported parting of ways he was responsible for Sundissential's world wide lunatic asylum reputation and for guiding them to the top of the hard Dance pile in the Early 00's! After being to hell back he has returned to the scene he holds most dear, badder and madder than ever with his signature grin and sense of humour still firmly in place. Having taken the helm of Godskitchen's Polysexual - the Midlands has a new hard-dance super-power! Ahead of Frantic & Polysexuals LisaTime this Saturday we caught up with both of them for a long overdue catch up......

Will Paterson on Madders:

There is only one Madders! Having known Madders now for many years he has had a unique and long standing effect on Hard House and Clubland in general! He has done more, seen more, achieved more than most and he is still here in 2004 talking the talk and walking the walk and making Polys a real force to be reckoned with!

Madders on Will Paterson:

Willhelm as I have affectionately called him over the last few years is a Real Player in the true sense of the word. What he has done with Frantic since its inception is truly remarkable. By far Frantic is now top of the pile alongside Tidy. I am thrilled to be working with him again that’s for sure.

Madders with trademark grin in place

You are both widely recognised as 2 of the most talented Hard Dance promoters in the UK. What do you feel has been the secret to your success?

WILL: It’s definitely the Sex Appeal! Joking aside a lot of different factors including a healthy dose of good luck have helped make Frantic successful.

MADDERS: I think for different reasons really. Will is very consummate and professional in his approach to things and as for me the whole world knows what I am like; I just want to get at it!!

Frantic & Polysexual team up for their first joint venture for LisaTime on July 10th at the Coronet. Although this isn’t the first time you have both worked together it will be the first time that Frantic & Polys have. Are you looking forward to working together again?

WILL: It’s been a while since I worked with Uncle Madders but it’s definitely going to be a fun one! We have had a fairly full on relationship since he called me a "Southern puff" a few years back, but I’ve always had massive admiration for his ability to put on unbelievable events as I’m sure anyone whoever went to Sundissential North would agree. They made such an impact they even started their own trends like "Try Hards" and they were the first to get Hard House on to radio1 and into the Mixmag! And now Polys is the biggest Hard House event outside of the Capital and its just about to put 8000 nutters into a field in the Stratford!! Anyone fancy a bit of Sun and Rob Tisssera underneath a big top?!

MADDERS: Yes, big time! The Sundissential-Frantic-Goodgreef event at the Birmingham Academy on New Years eve 20002-3 was probably the finest Hard House event that this country has ever seen. The beauty about working about working with Frantic is that they know their market place and they keep things simple that is why they are so successful plus I hope with Willhelms blessing I will be able to add my little piece of magic to what is going to be an absolute blinder of an event!

Lisa Lashes is without doubt the biggest name in Hard Dance. What do you think has been the secret to her success over other artists?

MADDERS: By far ,her knockers! Hell she is going to kill me! No, in all sincerity for the last 5 years she is the undisputed Queen of world clubland, a title she has earned and deserves, period!

WILL: Lisa just has an unbelievable Star Quality that leaves the competition gasping for air! Until I saw her 4 years I was sceptical but anyone who has seen her enter a club will know what I’m talking about! She has this charisma that makes you feel you are seeing a real star!

On top of that I think she has an admirable commitment to Hard House and underground music. While many others have changed styles as they thought this would make them more successful Lisa has refreshingly stuck to playing the Hard House we all love! That said I know that she will be playing a massive range of harder styles and even some classics in her 3 hour set next week that will even convince her most consistent doubters!

Lisa Lashes at Wildchild

She has been said to have the star quality about her – do you see any other DJs coming through the ranks that have the same ‘x’ factor?

MADDERS: If you are talking about fanny then yes

WILL: At the moment Hard House and clubland in general is in an exciting process of change. There are lots of new and exciting DJS out there that have grown up listening to dance music and want passionately to create the clubs of the future! They don’t have the cynicism and negativity of a lot of older music industry personnel and they just want to go out there and play the music they love.

From Andy Whitby to Caroline Banx, from Kutski to Donna Birt there are many, many DJs who now want to entertain rather than trying to spend their whole set looking cool or trying to educate their audience. Clubbing is meant to fun and these DJs are bringing this essential feeling back!

Frantic is based in London and Polysexual in Birmingham. You have both travelled to each others respective strong holds. What would you say where the major differences between the two club cultures?

WILL: I think that the 2 cultures have grown more similar, but London tends to have a more cosmopolitan clubbing pop than Brum, but this just reflects the pop of London. It’s not been unknown to hear 5 or more different languages on the dancefloor at Frantic and this is one of the positive things about clubbing in that it’s all about including rather than excluding people!

Both places have a love of a great time, thrilling DJs and smiling their way through 8 hours of more of Hard House, trance and Funky House!

Clubs across the UK are collaborating with each other on a scale never seen before. Frantic & Polysexual, Wildchild & GoodGreef, Heat & Logic…do you see this as resulting in a new stronger hybrid scene that will finally put a stop to the politics which threaten to destroy it?

WILL: Collaborations are a great thing. I think between Madders and me we must have run well over a 1000 events and there is always the need to get that essential dose of new creativity by bouncing ideas around with someone new. Being a successful promoter is all about realising that there is always another way to keep the clubbers happy! Working with Goodgreef or Wildchild has opened my eyes to lots of new DJs and even to working harder on reaching Northern audiences.

Will (center) with Riot's Nolan and Ed Real

Polysexual has already seen events which featured a hardcore room inhabited by the likes of Scott Brown & Hixxy and with the forthcoming Frantic vs. Hardcore Heaven this trend is set to continue. Do you think this revolution will stretch all the way to seeing Drum & Bass in a Hard Dance event?

MADDERS: The one thing I am still very proud of was bringing in the Hardcore when I was still at Sundissential. The opportunity to work with the legend that is Hixxy was just too good to miss and what an amazing success it was. I have continued this path at Polysexual by working alongside the amazing Hardcore Till I Die. This collaboration is overwhelmingly successful and is something that both Hixxy and I are going to build on for the future. I firmly believe that things like this bring a new dynamic to the Hard Dance scene.

WILL: I think there are a lot of similarities between Hardcore and Hard House and in fact I was going to United Dance events with both genres back at Bagleys/ Canvas in 1997, but it’s definitely refreshing to see the genres together at events in 2004. Both scenes share a similar passionate attitude about their music and their musical heroes and both are very willing to ignore the sniping of other scenes.

We have had a massive response to Hardcore Heaven vs. Frantic and we are really looking forward to the mix up of crowds and sounds on the 14th. The demand has been so high that we had to add a 5th Room to cope with it!

I’m not sure Hard House and Drum and Bass will be a regular thing although there is a strong similarity between the Harder end of Drum and Bass and Hard House which I love!

As 2 of the Hard Dance scenes leading figures you have a better insight into its future than most. Where do you see the scene progressing to over the next 5-10 years?

WILL: The most exciting thing about the future is that anything is possible. Technology is now moving so fast that it’s soon going to be possible to have the most amazing sound, visuals and decor as standard. Production companies are already talking to me about huge Walls of Visuals and now DJs can mix from MP3 files and all sorts of totally mad stuff that will totally transform the way we club. As customers we will soon be able to buy text tickets straight to your mobile or pay for drinks in the club using epos.

As far as Hard House is concerned I think that you will the development of all sorts of different types of events from Weekenders across the Uk to more Festivals but on the other end of the scale smaller, ticket only parties at lots of different locations. Much like the Rock scene I hope we can colonise all sorts of weird and wonderful places and play our music loud!

MADDERS: I think that like a lot of things in life there are peaks and troughs. However the Hard House scene in this country is one of the more vibrant aspects of the whole industry so I believe it still has plenty of mileage in it that’s for sure!

The West Coast of the USA has now started to embrace Hard Dance and other states are starting to follow. Phil Reynolds recently played in Moscow and apparently there is an increasing demand for Hard Dance in Beijing. Do you see this as strengthening or weakening the UK Hard Dance scene?

WILL: The bigger the better. The more Global the stronger the UK scene. While the DJS are out playing across the World they will be experiencing new things and learning different ways to make the audience happy. Bringing this back to the UK can only help strengthen our ever growing ever changing Hard House scene!

Lisa Lashes played in Sau Paulo recently and apparently it was just amazing with a huge wall of video screens behind her and massive sound and all this outdoors! Now we could really do with some of that type of clubbing in the UK!

MADDERS: The there are some incredible Dj,s from abroad look for example Jon Bishop from the US.DJ,s like Jon and many others bring over their ideas and styles with them which only enhance the scene we love.

You each have very different focuses on the parties you promote. Frantic strongly focuses on the artists on the bill and the venues it uses. Polysexual is still about the artists but more about the club culture. Do you think that if you were to switch places for a year you would have enough insight to be able to run each others parities?

WILL: I think it would certainly be a big challenge! A good promoter starts by knowing his or her audience and this would leave me in a weak position if I moved to Brum. That said Id love the chance to promote at AIR and work with Gods! And it would mean I got to be involved in Global so show me where to sign!!!

MADDERS: I think that Willhelm would rather live in a straight jacket then swap places with me for a month. Only joking Will. No seriously I am really looking forward to working with him again he really is an amazing promoter and both of us are always looking for new ideas all the time to evolve the scene that we both love.

You are both obviously not one man shows. What do you think are important attributes to have to make it as part of the Frantic & Polysexual teams?

WILL: A love of the music and clubbing in general is a crucial starting point to helping with Frantic. After that a willingness to work really hard and listen to clubbers is very important. For an event like Lisatime we will have 3 people working full time for weeks to get the show on the road and then as many as 25 volunteer clubbers spreading the word about why people should come to the event to see Lashes and Halliwell

MADDERS: The most important thing is you must have the right people around you that share the passion of work that we all do. My young right hand man Ritchie Ward is amazing as is Dickon and Amanda at Frantic without these peoples guile and determination both Will and I would not be in the positions that we are!!

Madders where do you see Polysexual in a year’s time?

MADDERS: Well obviously it has been an interesting year for me personally. However Polysexual is coming on leaps and bounds for which I am very proud. It is especially going to be very interesting now that Sundissential has gone bust. Even at the age of 38 I am still a very ambitious man so with Ritchie and our young resident DJ supremo Hinsley by my side we will take Polysexual to the stars I am convinced of that! Check out 12 hour mini festival MASH-TONBURY on Bank Holiday Sunday 29th August. I shall unveil details this Saturday!

Will – and Frantic?

WILL: The next year is going to be crucial for Frantic. We are changing a lot of things to keep ahead. We are doing less events from July so that we can concentrate on doing some very different concepts in the Autumn and in 2005. We are doing Lashed at a new venue with 8 different 3 Hour Sets; we have a very unique Lab4 set at HHA in Oct; Convergence is 6 in Sept with 3 very different rooms!; Frantic is back taking on Wildchild in Nov and we are working on 2 secret projects for 2005 which will be like nothing else we have ever done before. All this and we are looking at some more small events at new venues.

Ok to wrap up what can we expect from Polys and Frantic’s 1st collaboration on July 10th?

WILL: Now that would be giving too much away! What I can say is that when Polys and Frantic team up expect fireworks!

MADDERS: Lisatime is going to be stunning I cannot wait. By the way can anybody give me a lift home? Perhaps Willhelm will be having an afterparty and I will stay at his!!See you at the Coronet! God Bless ya!

Thank you both for your time.
