TILT Interview with Nathan Koppens

Reported by Sharon B / Submitted 29-04-04 15:11

When Heat moved their day parties to night time events clubbers all over London mourned the loss of a large quality daytime party where people could gather with their friends on a Saturday afternoon and dance to quality music in a top notch venue. But then along came TILT at Studio 33 and the day was saved! On May 8th TILT celebrates its first birthday and after a year of major successes including acquiring new residents alongside of original resident Charlie Rox in the form of Mixmag Future Hero Ali Wilson and London’s best up-and-coming DJ’s in the form of Dave Lochrie, Daegal Brain and Simon Rutherford and being voted both Best Daytime Party and Best New Party of the Year 2003, Tilt have more than proved that day time clubbing is still going strong. Sharon B caught up with TILT promoter Nathan Koppen to find out more about their 1st Birthday celebrations and reflections on the successes of the year gone by and hopes and dreams for the year to come.

Sharon B: TILT has been going for one year now and since its start has been phenomenally successful – what do you attribute your success to and how do you feel about having accomplished so much in such a short space of time?

Nathan Koppens: Whilst it’s flattering to hear TILT described in those terms I think there’s a way to go yet before we can consider ourselves a success in the same sense as proven promotions such as the likes of Heat, Frantic, Twisted and Logic. Having said that, it is a real milestone for any party to hold a 1st Birthday event, and it has been highly satisfying to have met a number of the goals we set for ourselves in terms of the kind of party we wanted TILT to be.

I think the key factor behind the success we’ve had to date is that we’ve focused our efforts on making sure the many components that make up a party are as good as they can be. Quality lineups and venue will make a party good, but if you also take care of the details that have the potential to put a dampener on a clubbers experience if they’re not quite right you have the best chance to make the party as good as it can possibly be. So whether it’s sorting the air-con, making sure the toilets are clean, or removing the beer-boy that thinks it’s ok to harass the girls around him, it’s about looking after your clubbers as best you can.

SB: You were voted as both Harderfaster Day Party of the Year and Harderfaster New Party of the Year for 2003 – how does it feel to have your hard work acknowledged and rewarded by your peers and patrons?

NK: Needless to say we were dead chuffed to pick up these awards, especially as the Harderfaster awards are voted for by the people whose opinion matters most – the clubbers themselves. We’d like to say thanks for all those that voted and who help make TILT such an enjoyable party to put on in the first place.

SB:How did TILT first come about? How long have you been clubbing and what made you decide to move from being a clubber to a promoter?

NK: I’ve been clubbing since I arrived in London in April ’99, but Charlie’s clubbing career goes right back to the days of acid house and the M25 raves (I think he still has his white gloves tucked away somewhere!). I first fell into promotion when Charlie and a couple of good mates from Brighton-way started a pumping little trance party called Tolerance in Brixton, and I started harassing my London mates to get along in support. After two great years helping with the marketing/promotional side, I decided that it was time for me to go my own way with Charlie and create a promotion from scratch the way I wanted it to be. I felt strongly that clubbers were not getting the same quality clubbing experiences that so inspired me when I arrived in London in ’99, and which I felt were still more than possible with the right approach and a lot of hard work.

SB: Your party has always been trance based – what made you decided to follow this particular style and how will the next year affect your music policy? Will you continue to solely focus on trance or will your musical horizons expand over the next 12 months?

NK: Charlie and I have always been massive fans of the many forms of trance, and we feel that uplifting music is the key to creating a positive, energetic vibe in a club. We think it’s important to offer a fresh and diverse musical experience though, and as such TILT will continue to showcase all forms of trance, from the euphoric, uplifting trance of the likes of Ian Betts, to the driving tech trance from DJs such as resident Ali Wilson. It is a good thing that there is greater musical diversity on the scene now as I think clubbers are better served by it, but we don’t feel we’d do justice to clubbers by playing music that we weren’t passionate about and didn’t know enough about in the first place to really deliver the goods. So aside from the addition of a house offering at particular events, you won’t see genre’s such as hard house and techno at TILT, as we’ll be sticking with the trance sounds that we know and love.

SB: How many people do you have on your team and what are their varied roles? How important has it been for your success to have such a dedicated and devoted team?

NK: Including our resident DJs and promoters, TILT now has 26 people helping promote and put on the party. There is no doubt that the crew as a unit have been massively instrumental in making TILT the party it is, whether by spreading the word and bringing along quality people to add to our following, or helping with the running of the party in setting up and doing a shift on the door. Everyone gives their time on a voluntary basis too, which has been an inspiration for me as they do it purely because they believe in the vision for the party and want to help make that vision become a reality. We’ve also been very fortunate in the volunteer efforts we’ve had from others such as Joe Herdman, who filmed and produced the wicked video clip we have running on the TILT website, and Jim Wild, who made the TILT website a reality in the first place. There’s no way TILT would be where it is today without the selfless contributions of all these people, and I’ll always be very grateful for that.

SB: Over the last year the London club scene has witnessed a massive reduction in people going out to clubs and yet you managed to introduce a new event and achieve excellent numbers in terms of people attending – what do you feel has been the key ingredient in your success in terms of enticing people to come to your event?

NK: Whilst harder clubbing is going through a period of change at the moment, I think it is a bit of a myth that numbers have dropped significantly. There are quite a lot more promotions in existence at any one time now compared to when I arrived in London, and as a result numbers can be spread a bit thin at times. There is, however, a growing recognition by hard dance promoters that clubbers needs have not been met very well in recent times, and the shift to quality venues is one clear sign that things are changing for the better in this respect. A better standard of clubbing inevitably attracts more people to the scene, and inspires them to go out more often also. TILT has actually drawn a lot of its following from people that had considered themselves “retired”, or who had moved away from hard dance clubbing in favour of professionally-run clubs such as Fabric and the End.

SB: Your events always receive rave reviews from clubbers as can be witnessed on the forums of dance sites, how much of yourself do you put into your nights and what is it you aim for when you throw a party?

NK: As my wife would be quick to tell you, pretty much all of me goes into TILT, and then some! With TILT the aim has always been to create an event for the discerning clubber that knows what they like and what they’re not prepared to put up with at a party. After five years clubbing in London I’ve some pretty strong ideas about what makes, and takes away from, a great club experience, so for each party my efforts are focused mostly on translating these ideas into reality on the day. The ultimate aim for me is to be able to stand at the door at the end of the night as people leave, and get the feeling from almost everyone that they had a great time at TILT.

SB: What do you think makes a promotion successful and what are the important aspects of being a promoter in putting on a successful party?

NK: There are many elements to a successful party, including having a distinctive & high-quality music policy, using a venue that works for the music and the clubbers that music attracts, and forging a brand that will stand out from the crowd and have positive associations for clubbers. I believe that a successful promoter is one that makes a real effort to understand their clubbers needs, and then puts as much energy and hard work as they can into the detail to ensure that these needs are being met first and foremost. It is also important to know, and be known by your clubbers, and be available at the party at all times to get feedback, both good and bad. That way people feel that the promotion they are giving their money to actually cares about them, and is doing all it can to make sure they are being looked after.

SB: Why did you decided to choose Saturday afternoons for your event? What preferences did you have for a day party over a night event?

NK: As a clubber back in ’99-’00 some of my most memorable clubbing experiences were day parties, such as the hugely popular Match Made in Heaven bank holiday specials. The most amazing party I think I’ve ever seen was the Omnipotence Boxing Day special at the Fridge in Dec ’99. The explosive response I experienced that day showed me that the natural energy and stamina that clubbers have in the day time can take a party to a different level from night time events where clubbers energy levels naturally tend to fall away.

SB: Which has been your most memorable event to date and why?

NK: That’s a tough one to answer. Our last party in April was in many eyes our best yet, so in terms of turnout and the atmosphere in the club it would have to the highlight to date. But the most memorable for me would probably be the November party, as this was the first event where the reaction on the dancefloor was such that we could feel like we’d really put the package together in terms of the music, the crowd and the overall vibe. It was also the event that the TILT video clip was filmed at, and was also reviewed by a certain Harderfaster journo, so it was a bit of a milestone event for us from a promotional perspective as well.

SB: Has TILT always been held at Studio 33? Why did you choose this venue and what do you feel it holds over other venues in London that adds to your event? Why has it been the right choice for TILT?

NK: It took some seven months to get TILT off the ground as we searched for the venue to go with our vision for TILT. When we first met Winston and heard his plans for the club he was building in Vauxhall we were sold straight away, and this was when the venue was little more than three stripped railway arches with some timber framing thrown in! Studio 33 offered pretty much everything we were looking for in a venue – a central location in a safe area, multiple rooms to showcase different music forms, quality sound and lighting setup (and an engineer that listens to the promoter), friendly and professional security, stylish décor and furnishings, plush toilets (including an impressive 13 cubicles in the ladies), and even useful extras such as an ATM, cigarette machine and water fountains. Aside from all of the above I think the multi-room layout has made it perfect for TILT, as it has helped foster an intimate house party atmosphere that is rarely seen in theatre-style venues.

SB: You have some of London’s most talented DJ’s as your residents – what made you decide to go for them and can you give a brief description about each one for those who do not know them?

NK: TILT began with Charlie as the sole resident, as we felt it was important not to limit the musical diversity of the party by having the same DJs playing month to month. However, by the time we put together the residents collective for last Octobers TILT we had recognized that striking a balance between diversity and reliability would provide a consistently better product musically, so we added five more residents to play on rotation at every second TILT. The guys we chose all shared two things in common – they had already proven themselves with great performances at previous TILT events, and they were passionate about trance/hard trance and the vision we had for TILT. It has been a real pleasure working with these guys, as aside from their talent and professional approach to their DJing, they are also sound blokes up for some banter and a laugh.

SB: How do you go about booking DJ’s? Do you go out and watch them perform to get a good insight into their music and stage presence or do you solely rely on demos from people? What is it about a DJ that makes you want to book them? Word of mouth, seeing them live or demo?

NK: TILT takes its music policy seriously, and we put a lot of time and thought into the order of DJs and the overall balance to ensure that there is diversity at each party, and proper flow/progression from one style to the next. Demos are crucial to getting the music policy right, as DJs are placed in the lineup according to the style(s) exhibited on their demo. Of course, there’s more to being a great DJ than selecting the right tunes and mixing a quality demo. It’s important that a DJ shows enthusiasm and passion behind the decks for the music they’re playing – otherwise why should the crowd get excited if the DJ looks impassive or even worse, plain bored.

SB: What have been your best and worst moments as a promoter?

NK: My most challenging moment as a promoter was arriving at Studio 33 for the launch party last May to find that it was basically a construction site in progress and in such a state that you’d swear a party wasn’t even possible. The venue management and the TILT crew performed a minor miracle that day to get the place ready enough for the launch party to go ahead, and in the end the half-finished state of the place didn’t seem to matter and the party went off without a hitch.

There have been a fair few highs since then, and none greater than seeing the dancefloor really kick-off for the first time. Probably the highlight for me though was at a TILT late last year when someone tracked me down to tell me that in five years of clubbing in London he thought TILT was the best club he’d ever been to. It was the first time that someone had said something like that to me, and was one of those moments when you realize that it had all been worthwhile.

SB: What advice would you give to anyone wishing to get into promoting for the first time? Any valuable lessons you have learnt over the last 12 months that you wish you had known before starting up TILT?

NK: If you have the passion and the commitment to succeed then anything is possible, but only if you are prepared to put in a lot of hard work along the way. It needs to be run as a business, as very few promotions actually make any money and even parties done for fun need to keep their costs within their revenues to stay afloat. Most importantly, don’t waste your energy bad-mouthing other promotions or trying to undermine them, as your party and the scene as a whole will be much better off you stay focused on making your event as good as it can be.

SB: For the next TILT you will be opening up all 3 rooms with a capacity of 850 for the event – do you hope to continue to have a 3-room event from now on or is it a birthday special?

NK: As birthday events always attract a big response from a party’s followers and the wider scene, we felt that this was the perfect opportunity to expand the capacity and open up a third room at TILT for the first time. The Crystal room really is an exciting clubbing space, with the DJ booth in the centre of the room and a mezzanine floor with cocktail bar overlooking the action from above, so we’ve been dying to get the chance to unleash it on our clubbers. It also means we can bring house music in to the TILT Bar, so we’ll have a more complete musical offering to cater for people with wider tastes than trance and hard trance alone. Whilst we’re scaling things down some over the summer season we’ll be cranking things up again later in the year with further 3-room events and some big lineups to boot.

SB: Tell us more about the line up for your birthday bonanza – who will we be able to see and how do you feel personally about the line up and up coming event?

NK: We’re rapt to have two absolute legends in Phil Reynolds and Ian Betts playing at the 1st Birthday, especially as Ian tells me they’ll be playing B2B together during the TILTED Hour for the first time in their illustrious careers. It’s Phil’s TILT debut as well, and to mark the occasion he’ll be playing the uplifting hard trance sound that he first became known for. I have some amazing memories of seeing Camden Palace absolutely rocking to Phil’s uplifting trance sets at Frantic in ’99-’00, so as one of the main DJs that got me hooked on clubbing, it’s something else to have him come and play for us at our 1st Birthday celebration. We also have all six residents appearing for the first time at the same TILT, including a special B2B from our production geniuses James Lawson and Ali Wilson. With Latex Zebra also in the mix and the addition of house music with South London outfit Muzikbox in the TILT Bar this is without a doubt our most exciting array of DJ talent yet.

SB: TILT has been noted as having some very good-looking people attend– how did you react when you first heard the saying “TILT Totty”? How would you describe your crowd in your own words?

NK: I was pretty taken aback at the time actually, as it came from Harderfaster’s most famous critic Shaun Rowland, and as anyone lurking on the forums knows, praise from Shaun is never given lightly! Whilst it’s nice to have TILT’s crowd described in such terms, it wouldn’t bring anything to the party if they weren’t genuinely top people also. More than anything it is the people that make the party, so it adds so much to TILT that we have, I think, some of the friendliest clubbers around. They also love their trance and hard trance which is always good, as it means they really know how to show their appreciation for a great tune or set.

SB: What are your hopes and dreams for the next 12 months – where would you like to see both yourself and your event by the 2nd birthday?

NK: Our ambition for the next year is to take TILT to a wider audience and establish it as a real fixture on the London scene. At the same time we’ll also be working hard to maintain the following and vibe that has made TILT popular in the first place, so that growth does not compromise the principles behind the party. Over the next year we’ll also be looking to promote the growth of the trance/hard trance scene by offering our support to the likes of Heat, Twisted, becomeone, Friendz and Knowwhere, all parties that we feel really make an effort to look after their clubbers and who deserve all the success they get as a result.

SB: Obviously a great success comes as a result of the work of many – who would you like to take this opportunity to thank and why?

NK: Firstly I’d like to thank my business partner Charlie, and all the TILT crew (Nik, Carly, Sandi, Suya, Jim, Joey, Muzz, Flea, Davey, Phil, Karina, Keren, James & Nicki) for all their hard work over the last year, but also for the faith they showed in TILT and in me when I needed it most. A huge debt goes to Jim Wild and Joe Herdman for their amazing work on the TILT website and video clip respectively, and to Jay Carr for producing such great design work within often testing timeframes. My respect to the TILT residents (Charlie, James, Simon, Daegal, Dave and Ali) and to all our guest DJs for their professionalism and enthusiasm, and for the scorching trance sets they have delivered each and every party. Thanks also to Amy, Pink Kitty and Joey for lending their photographic talents to TILT and helping capture the essence of the party. Finally, I’d like to thank my wonderful wife Megan, whose patience and understanding in the face of my often single-minded commitment to TILT’s success has been simply amazing.

SB: Any last comments?

NK: One more thank you, to the clubbers themselves, whose support and enthusiasm has been just unreal, and without which TILT wouldn’t be the half the party it is. See you on the 8th!

More: Nine storming parties on from our launch in May 2003, London's award-winning Saturday afternoon trance party celebrates it’s coming of age with its' biggest and most spectacular party yet!

TILTs’ ground-breaking day party formula bringing the hottest trance talent from London and beyond to the sublime surroundings of Studio 33 has drawn praise from across the world of hard dance and helped put day partying firmly on the map of London clubbing.

For the very first time at TILT Studio 33's magnificent Crystal Room will be open and resonating with the driving, uplifting euphoric trance that has rocked the TILT Bar through 2003. Taking the stage here is a man that needs no introduction as one of the original pioneers of London’s club scene and a true legend in the world of dance production and Djing. Main room star at legendary venues Camden Palace, the Fridge and Turnmills and long-time favourite of harder clubbers around the globe, Phil Reynolds will be marking his TILT debut with a last-set performance of the uplifting hard trance that first made him famous.

Joining him is the prodigiously talented DJ and producer Ian Betts. A prominent figure in London’s clubland for over five years, Ian has played at numerous legendary parties including Frantic, XLR8, Twisted, Torque and Feersum. 2003 proved another massive year, with his phenomenally energetic uplifting trance sets having left elated clubbers strewn in his wake at Frantic, Knowwhere, becomeone, Heat, and many more. A performer of the highest order and one of the scene’s most popular DJs.

TILT resident Daegal Brain brings over 10 years DJ experience and a CV brimming with appearances at the likes of Heat, Wildchild, Logic, Frantic & Knowwhere. His sublime set construction and passionate, high-energy performances always hit the right note with clubbers, as shown with his storming set at the Heat Ibiza Tour party @ Space, which earnt him the Harderfaster Set of the Year 2003 Award.

Rounding out this supreme collection of trance talent in the Crystal Room is Dave Lochrie, a leader amongst the new breed of DJ / producers. Along with his residency with TILT, Dave has made regular appearances at both Heat and Logic and has electrified clubbers with main room sets at Turnmills, the Fridge and the Coronet. His first release "Escalation" on Impact records featured on the Heat UK CD and generated a huge response from heavyweight DJ's and clubbers alike.

In the TECH ZONE TILT presents five of the most exciting DJs in London today. Mixmag Future Hero and TILT resident Ali Wilson goes head-to-head against fellow production talent James Lawson. Ali is one of the most versatile DJs in clubland, with a record box spanning all forms of harder music, but stacked full of storming tech trance when brought to TILT. Recently named Harderfaster New Producer of the Year 2003, he is also a highly accomplished producer/engineer, having signed several tracks to top labels such as Nukleuz, Vicious Circle, Tripoli and Honey Pot already. Tipped by both Mixmag in their Feb 03 edition, Jan 04 Future Hero’s edition, and DJ Mag (Apr 03) as one of the young hard dance DJs in the UK to watch out for in 2004. His B2B partner James Lawson was named by iDJ Magazine ‘One to Watch in 2003’ describing him as ‘one of the hottest producers to hit the hard dance scene in ages’. With over 50 production/remix credits to his name, James’ trademark blend of crisp production and hands-in-the-air riffs has made him one of the fastest rising talents in the UK and abroad. With a massive year ahead including track releases with BK and Nick Sentience and tour dates in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Europe, there will be no stopping James Lawson in 2004.

Fellow resident Simon Rutherford has gone from strength to strength in the last year, earning appearances at virtually every major promotion including Frantic, Convergence, Chemistry and Logic. Having just returned from a seven-week tour taking in the US, Australia and N.Z, Simon is poised to become one of the biggest hitters in the Hard Dance scene in 2004, with an unrelenting selection of uplifting, banging Hard Trance and a dedication to putting on a good show that proves "time and time again that he's got what it takes to motivate a dance floor" (Tom Allen, HarderFaster.net).

Founding resident since the TILT launch party in May 2003, Charlie Rox's vinyl mastery and energetic performances behind the decks have earnt him appearances at both Frantic and Heat in 2004. Charlie’s unique blend of uplifting German hard trance and energy trance combines to produce an exhilarating hard trance sound with phenomenal drive and energy.

Last but certainly not least in the TECH ZONE lineup is Zoology resident Latex Zebra (aka Dan Nugent). Having appeared at the likes of Frantic, Recoverworld, Oblivion and numerous other London promotions, the Zebra has established a reputation as a bold and technically strong hard trance DJ. Though versatile in style he will be rocking TILT with the stripped down European tech trance sound that is now threatening to take the UK scene by storm.

Hosting the TILT Bar are London house maestros Muzikbox, fronted by the champion of house music mayhem and the flawless ‘Form’ front man, David Daniel. Having built a solid reputation through his residencies at South London shindigs Form, Fire & Ice and Muzikbox, David’s deft combination of quality music, attitude and awareness means he always knocks out a set in tune with the occasion. Joining him in the DJ ring will be an awesome line of hand-picked opponents, with an emphasis on real talent and exciting individuals that can really pack a party punch. Wrestling with his record box this month will be Regis who has graced the decks at bars and clubs around his adopted home of Southend.

Ten DJs across three rooms delivering the finest trance, hard trance and house beats on offer.

If you've not yet been to the party that has clubbers, DJs and movers and shakers from across the hard dance industry singing it's praises, then this is the one TILT event you will not want to miss!
