Interview with Lisa Pin-Up

Reported by Miss BPM / Submitted 29-03-04 10:00

Lisa Pin-Up needs no introduction whatsoever, whether you been clubbing for 8 years or only 2 months, you would have heard of Lisa Pin-Up at some point of your clubbing life! Renowned for her sheer determination for the club scene on a whole and recognised for her pounding hard beats to her uplifting hard house sounds. With production expertise under her belt to owning her own record label and many hard dance releases on one of the worlds most known Hard Dance record labels Nukleuz. Including her new Nukleuz signing and her new album "Hardhouse Anthems 5" mixed by Lisa Pin-Up & Caroline Banx for Nukleuz, there's plenty of questions to ask her!

As this interview is for HarderFaster, I took it upon myself to ask the HarderFaster forums for their input and gave a chance to win free VIP entry into X-Static vs Hardware, where Lisa Pin-Up will be playing on April 11th Bank holiday Sunday! The questions and winners have been clearly displayed in this interview!

Welcome to your first exclusive HarderFaster interview for Lisa Pin-Up!

Miss BPM: Which DJ or person influenced you to become what you are today?

Lisa Pin-Up: Well it was a good few years back and his name was Sabrina Duncan (yes it is a guy!). He was a DJ at a club I went to called "Blow up" @ Maximus in Leicester Square about 10 years ago. I have never seen a DJ be able to mix two tracks together for as long as him, and he constantly had two records mixing together as once. Looking back I think it may have ruined the records a bit as you could not hear each one properly as you were always hearing two records, but for someone like me that was so curious about what the DJ did I thought it was fantastic.

Miss BPM: With the way the scene is and has been for the past 2 or so years, some clubbers feel that clubbing on a whole has come to a stand still and want un explained answers! What would you tell the clubber/raver of today what you can and do provide for the club scene?

Lisa Pin-Up: The biggest thing I bring to the club scene is my enthusiasm; I have, as much today as when I very first discovered going clubbing, and hope this energy is contagious onto the dance floor. I think sometimes some people can get to deep about clubbing, lets face it the whole reason we all got into it in the first place was to have fun!

Miss BPM: Who would you most like to play a back 2 back set with, who you haven’t played with already? (Normcat of HarderFaster asked this question and has won his free VIP ticket)

Lisa Pin-Up: The closest I have ever come to doing a back to back
Set with was, all the tidy girls at a Tidy Weekender, but all we really did
Was a 20 mins set each then the next tidy girl came on. As for actually doing back to back I have never DJ'ed with anyone before. If I was asked I would but would prefer not to as I like total control over my sets, and when I am up there DJing and enjoying myself so much, I would find it hard to sit out of halve of it!

Miss BPM: With various compilation albums and Hard Dance track releases, have you ever wanted or tried to do something completely different i.e. uplifting trance or even funky?

Lisa Pin-Up: Not really, as my heart is with hard house and I don't think
I could do another style justice, as my soul would not be in it. Saying this
I can vary my sets when I DJ out, for example if I was playing a club like
Slinky, I would drop a few trance tracks in, as they are not a full on hard
house night, but I always revert back to my hard house routes. I have just
mixed hard house anthems 5 with Caroline Banx, which is sticking to what I
know best, banging hard house!

Miss BPM: There has most definitely been a spring in the step for female DJs this past 2+ years, and many female DJs have you to thank for that. (RussT asked this following question and has won his free VIP ticket) “Who do you personally admire from the talented crop of talented female DJs currently on the circuit?”

Lisa Pin-Up: I don't really get to hear many other DJ's on my travels as I usually have a tight schedule and am in and out of a club before I can listen. But I am glad to say there are loads of new girl DJ's just about to break into the scene, (to many to mention) which I think is fab as there should be equal amounts of boys and girls on the circuit. And of course you have a new crop of very successful hard dance girl DJ's that are just starting to make waves, you have Caroline Banx, Amber D, Tara Reynolds and one to watch out for, Miss BPM of course!

Miss BPM: You have just joined Nukleuz DJ agency, this appeared more of a natural move to me for you, as many of your releases this past years have been on Nukleuz. How is this going for you?

Lisa Pin-Up: I could not have asked for it to be better, Nukleuz have a team of people that work so hard and what makes it easier for me that they are very nice people. I have now made 12 tracks for Nukleuz so it was a natural progress for me to join them.

Miss BPM: Every time I have seen you DJ you give it your all behind the decks, which really gets the crowds going! You give the impression it’s your first time on the decks with all the energy you give out! Where on earth to you get your energy from after so many years of performing and what keeps your drive going?

Lisa Pin-Up: No big secret, I just bloody love it! And yes I love it as much as that magic day I very first discovered clubbing. I have seen so many clubbers along the way come and go but I still can't get enough of it, and don't know I would do with my life if I had to stop. Looking back I was always a bit mad and used to be the first on the dance floor and the last off, I think that is why me and Peter (my clubbing partner and now husband) got to know so many promoters before I started to DJ as we were just total nutters, which came in handy when it was time to give out my first demo mix.

Miss BPM: After a long day in the studio or a full on weekend of DJing what do you most like to do to chill out?

Lisa Pin-Up: When I am not in the studio or djing I do spend most of my time on my computer as I run my own web site www.lisapin-up.com where all my fans can contact me (and I do reply to everyone). But when I am not working I just love trashy T.V to chill out, I have sky plus where you can just record tons of stuff off the telly. At the moment I am watching Minder, which is on every day on Paramount with good old Arthur Daily, and Pulling Moves on BBC3 is pretty good to.

Miss BPM: Have you any plans to do any collaboration’s over the next year? If so, can you tell us a bit more about it or is it hush hush?

Lisa Pin-Up: I have been lucky enough to have worked with some great producers in the past, but to tell you the truth I prefer to work on tracks on my own. I am a selfish producer and like to get my own way in the studio as I have strong views on things, and always a bonus, you then get all the publishing yourself!

Miss BPM: If you fancy a night out with your mates, which London Hard Dance club event would you go to and why?

Lisa Pin-Up: Well I spend so much time in clubs, sometimes banging out the tunes at 5 clubs a week, so when I do get time off I don't really want to go to any, and anyway I need to save all that energy that I have to use when I am behind the decks!

Miss BPM: For those that don’t know what your latest releases are, what releases have you just this minute brought out?

Lisa Pin-Up: Well out right now if "Tie me up" a part of the DJ Nation series on Nukleuz. It has a real cheeky vocal, talking about being aroused by being tied and with ropes! I have also just this second finish a new tune for Nukleuz who are just getting remixes done as we speak. It's called "F**k This F**king F**ck!" and I think it should be in the Guinness book of records for swearing. Well I know this might not be big or clever but I think very funny! Also it is the hardest track I have made up to date, and it is bloody hard. Also I have a new tune about to be
Released on my own label Rock Hard Recordings. It's a double a sider with the titles "Bumpin Hard/Take this out" by Head Horny's & Lora which are tunes I have signed from Spain. I love my bouncy hard house, which mainly comes from Spain, which is frustrating for everyone out there as you can't get your hands on. Well here I signed two of my favourite (been canning "Bumpin hard" for about 6 months) and I am sure when you hear it you will be sure to recognise it from one of my sets. Also you can find "Take this out" on my new hard house anthems C.D.

Miss BPM: What’s the funniest or strangest thing a fan has said or done?

Lisa Pin-Up: I have watched a guy cut off his finger on a barrier in front of me once, and I helped him look for it with my torch, which was very surreal. Not funny/strange but really sweet are the lovely people I get to meet around the country. I have one girl that has made me a clubbing outfit, which looked wonderful.

Miss BPM: OK Lisa Pin-Up, time for the quick fire round!

Went onto the web site, and saw a link to "Studio photos". I foolishly went in there thinking she had taken a few pictures of her recording studio - seeing as she is a DJ and is in the music business. What I got was a bunch of photos of her taken in a photo studio!! DOH!
I think that says just about everything in regards to this!
