Dpressure and Cheeky People present: Time @ The Soundshaft Reported by Calanth / Submitted 02-01-04 18:51 This year I broke my 6 year tradition of celebrating New Year with a few thousand friends at Pride in Sydney’s Fox Studios, and enjoyed a far more intimate London party. I had a good feeling about the event based on the outstanding help I’d received from Tom, one of the promoters, when I had difficulty buying extra tickets for my guests on line. Turns out my hunch was right, and I couldn’t have felt better looked after if I’d showed up to my best friend’s house party. Garry, a patriotic soul if the union jack adorning his jumper was anything to go by, sat down and had a good chat with me about the event, its history and the line-up for the night. Based on two and a half years of experience staging Time, the Dpressure crew prefer to publicise their events mostly by word of mouth. Furthermore, the Soundshaft is a little out of the way, so I had doubts that the event would attract many ‘tourists’ (ie the sort of people who drift in, often drunk as skunks, and make trouble). The venue itself was on two levels and fairly cosy, but with enough comfy seats and dark corners to be interesting. Dpressure and Cheeky People had done loads of work with foil and hot-melt glue guns to get the place shiny (finding out the hard way why they call it hot melt glue). My only whinge about the Soundshaft was that only one toilet was provided for the girls! I had arrived a bit early so as to ‘case the joint’ and it was pretty empty. Garry allayed my fears, confirming that the presale tickets had sold out, and by midnight the place was full but not overcrowded. What impressed me most was that over the space of 11 hours there were 11 DJ’s! I missed Nigel Lewis (8-9) but Liz (aka ‘Lizard’) was warming the place up when I arrived with some fairly chilled out trance. Jason Day (10-11) and Jay Evans (11-12) upped the pace gradually as the people filtered in. This was a very mixed 20-something crowd with ‘costumes’ ranging from dungarees, a rabbit, sequins and a fluro cyber-dog ensemble to the more conservative jeans and ‘semi-formal’ ‘frocks’. In keeping with the couture, the average punter sported an ‘anything goes’ attitude and I met loads of people who just came up for a chat. The midnight countdown concluded with showers of confetti followed up by a few bursts of ‘snow’ from a bubble machine. Chris Spiking (12:15-1:15) kept the music fairly lively but then things got a bit more laid back for a couple of hours. Boris Bosjnak (1:15-2:15) and the combination of Feat and Lisa A. singing live (2:15-2:30) sortta let the pace drop for a while and Ehren Stoners (2:30- 3:30) only moved it up a few notches. This allowed me to get distracted from dancing for a while and I met Claire and her plastic cow and she took me upstairs to a corner where someone had set up a play-dough farm game. She then made me a giraffe out of those long skinny balloons that clever people twist into shapes! Surreal but fun! Bruno Cernecca (3:30- 4:30) brought my undivided attention back to the dance-floor and Clark Harris (4:30-5:30) pushed the music well into the trance end of the spectrum. During Clark’s set we got more showers of confetti and loads of party-poppers to spray streamers over each other. Finally Garry Ramsden (5:30-7) stopped flitting around the club playing host, and settled down behind the dex to round off the night. Musically this was a bit more chilled out than my recent experiences of London trance. Smatterings of house and a few anthems added variety, and none of the sets moved into that banging zone that I’d call ‘hardcore’. Loads of the fun came from the feeling that you were being looked after. Gary moved around checking on people all night, punters brought toys and lasers, people got happy but no-one was smashed to the point of being obnoxious. Basically a fun time was had by all.
