The Fishtank - Review

Reported by Robert Muir / Submitted 01-10-02 13:01

The Fishtank are back at the seaside again, at the forefront of Hard House in the South, knocking the clubs surrounding the pier into next week. Their normal venue is the Wedgwood Rooms, but the need to house nearly double their normal capacity is needed more and more so they are using this venue about 4 times a year. It is situated on the famous Seaside Pier which featured in the Who's film "Tommy".

The Line-up

Jon Doe / Lee James (Honey Pot Records/ Tripoli Trax)
DJ Sol Ray (e-traxx)
Jonty (Resident + Promoter)
Chris Ryder (Loca Promotions)

You get a nice feeling as you walk up to this club...hearing the waves crashing around you as you walk up the long carpeted walkway to the main doors. When walking through the entrance, that's when the 20k sound system gets you like a hot knife cutting through butter. The set up is amazing - most super clubs don't put as much effort into decoration as this baby. With aqua memorabilia hanging from every place you look - giving you a real under the water affect. You realise that under your feet is sea - a bit worrying when your going full throttle on the dance floor.

One of the headliners (Jon Doe) was playing a live set, which I didn't know how to take when I first heard about it some time ago - boy was I mistaken. Lee James who is a producer from Honey Pot Records accompanied him and showed us his amazing scratching skills leaving me speechless. The other headlining act was DJ Sol Ray who I've seen a few times before at the Fishtank, I am slowly becoming a fan of his talents. Chris Ryder from Loca promotions had broken the ice with some tough house tunes then Jonty started pulling the punters to the dance floor like the Pied Piper, hypnotising the crowd to the dance floor. The place was in full swing and people really looking like they were having the time of their lives (usual feeling at this event - trust me).

Jon Doe + Lee James took the reins from Jonty; they just took the breath from my lungs as their crunching tunes rinsed through the sound system - unbelievable, the music playing affected everyone in the room. As I walked through the heaving dance floor the crowd was as friendly as ever, handshakes and warm smiles from everyone. The Fishtank revellers are so friendly like one big happy family and I find that quite strange as the surrounding clubs in Portsmouth have so much attitude, you find yourself looking over your shoulder all the time. After the set, I felt like I had run a marathon and left my face smiling like the Joker. The best tune, which was played was a BK track "Revolution" which just blew the crowd away and certainly made me dance like a rooster - pure genius. At the event I met with the Promoter and resident of the event Jonty, who had played the early set but in my eyes shone through, playing a blazing set. All in all you know when you've been to a Fishtank event because you're counting the days to the next. Thanks to Jonty (Resident/Promoter) and to the best CROWD in Portsmouth...respect!
