Heat - Review

Here are some Nostradamus-like predictions I wrote down last Saturday afternoon:
1. Will is going to beat Gareth on Popstars.
2. England will win the next Rugby World Cup.
3. Saturday afternoon clubbing is going to be bigger than Jesus.
Now you should know that I always get at least 2 out of 3 of my predictions right - I'll leave it to you to decide which of these are going to come true As for prediction number 3, it was certainly starting to seem that way outside The Rock early on Saturday afternoon as a queue of a couple of hundred clubbers was already stretched down the side of the venue. Tourists were gathered around the exits of the Embankment tube looking at the proceedings with bewilderment, some even asking what all the excitement was about:
Tourist couple: 'Excuse me, do you know what's going on here ?'
Me: 'Yeah, it's an afternoon club called Heat'
Cue look of shocked horror as tourists quickly walk away studiously avoiding eye contact.
Once inside The Rock we discovered that despite the early hour things were already, well, heated is one word for it. It was just like we'd stepped into a timewarp back to their last party back in December as the dancefloor was already full and Fevah's Riki Shane was up on the decks cranking out a pounding set. The Rock is such a nice venue as loads of people commented, especially for an afternoon party where you don't want to be going into a dingy, dirty dive of a place like some of London's less salubrious venues. With a multi-level dancefloor, lots of different little separate areas for dancing, and a design which means that wherever you're dancing you can see everyone else going off, it's already a firm favourite of mine.
There are two things though other than the venue which make a party and one of them is the crowd. And what a crowd it was at Heat, just fantastically up for it, bouncy, friendly and full of energy, it was basically an upsized version of Bubbles . I've always thought that the best crowds in clubland were to be found at the Sunday parties, the way I see it it's a sort of a Darwinian selection and evolution process. The advantage that the Saturday afternoon clubbers have though is they haven't got 8-15 hours under the heels already, 'fresh meat' as Lab 4 would say.
The second ingredient was of course the DJ's, and I found it hard to pick a standout from the excellent sets that afternoon. Each one offered a slightly different style ranging from Grant Thomson's relentlessly uplifting hard trance, Spencer Freeland's as always quality Frantic defining soud, Marc French's searing and completely seamlessly delivered set and closing out with Raymondo's trancier offering.
Two highlights I've got to mention: hearing the upcoming Peroxide track by Mobi-D, 'Jedi Raver' for the first time, the Rock literally shaking to it's foundations, and also when 'Beautiful' breaks and the crowd going just totally mental - can you see anyone having a good time in this pic ???
Bigger than Jesus ? After just 4 parties Heat has already become a runaway success, perhaps taking even the promoters by surprise judging by the number of people who had to be turned away at the doors. It's certainly strange that noone else has copied the saturday afternoon concept given their obvious success. On a completely unrelated topic did I mention the harderfaster launch party will be on Saturday, 16th March from 3-10pm ?
The next Heat will be on the 9th of March and we'll bring you the lineup as soon as we have it - our advice: get there early
