In what’s been a ruddy good year for Turnmills (and London’s club scene on the whole), we wrap things up with a bang on Saturday 29th December with Part 1 of our infamous Turnmills Sessions series and a proper rave up for those peeps who can’t be without their weekly clubbing fix and/or can’t make it out on New Year’s Eve a few nights later. Part 2 takes place a fortnight later on Saturday 5th January 2008, but before all that, there’s the small matter of Chicago house heroes Derrick Carter and Greenskeepers to contend with, backed by a hand-picked selection of home-grown talents in the shape of Paul Jackson, King Roc, Wandy and Tim Davison. Oh, and with a limited number of tickets priced a mere £8 in advance or £12 on the door... it ain’t gonna break the bank neither!!
The USA is home to its fair share of global house music icons. From Roger Sanchez, Todd Terry and Armand van Helden to Kenny Dope, Louie Vega and the Def mix mafiosos... those boys in the States never fail to disappoint us in that department. Another name to add to that cult list is of course, Derrick Carter. The larger than life character is one of the leading ambassadors of the underground ‘boompty sound’ – a term inadvertently coined by his mother, when she once asked him to make music using his voice, rather than “that boompty boomp sh*t!!”. Born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago, Carter remains one of the most high profile DJs in the world. Back in 1998 he released an EP with Mark Farina and Chris Nazuka as the group ‘Symbols & Instruments’, which had a strong influence on the burgeoning ambient techno movement in England and established Derrick as an international figure in the underground house scene. He later set up the legendary Classic record label with London’s Luke Soloman (which retired as it were on its 100th release), whilst as a remixer he’s worked with a diverse range of artists including Human League, DJ Sneak and Royksopp. Carter’s ‘boompty’ beats will be dropping at Turnmills amidst a flurry of old skool house, disco, soul and jazz and he’ll feel right at home as Chicago pals Greenskeepers join him on the flight across the Atlantic. Representing the P-Funk outfit will be electro-percussionist James Curd, who’s previously spun at Turnmills back in March 2006 for Together. Signed to Om Records, Greenskeepers have been described as abstract, quirky and avant-garde in their time. Their sensational 2nd album Pleetch spawned the hits, ‘Pilipino Phil, Lotion, Man in the House’ and ‘Keep it Down’ (complete with Radioslave’s killer re-rub) and 3 tracks in total were used on hit TV show ‘Grey’s Anatomy’!! The follow up album Polo Club has also been received hype reviews with the band selling out shows around the world for the past few years. The main room line-up is completed by man about town Tim Davison who’s been carving out a career as one of the most hotly tipped DJs of the moment with his deep and excellently-produced electronic house. Also check out his Chemical Brothers bootleg of ‘Hey Boy, Hey Girl’, which is a firm fave in everyone’s box right now!!
Hot-foot it over to T2, where the Chicago grooves are replaced by the sound of London, courtesy of Sedition DJs and some of the key names on the scene. First up is Paul Jackson, who needs no introduction. With a DJ and production career spanning 15 years under his belt, Paul is still pushing things forward. Making a name for himself on Darren Emerson’s Underwater label with the classic track ‘The Push’, Paul has continued to impress year after year. 2007 has seen the launch of his own label Dozer and in the past 12 months he’s remixed the likes of Justin Timberlake, Pink, Jamiroquai, Ultra Naté, Space Cowboy and GusGus to name a few. Also on the bill is scenster King Roc. He’s had a mental year playing at key clubs and festivals in the UK and further field and has released some wicked tunes on labels like Love Minus Zero and Bugged Out! Completing this killer line-up is Chibuku resident and jack of all DJ trades – Wandy.
Whether you call it a post Xmas blow-out or a pre NYE mash-up... whichever way you look at it, it’s all rather LARGE.
