I first heard about Mind when I was stopped in the street in London a few years back, by one of those annoying people who try to get you to sign up for direct debits to charities. I usually like to annoy them by stopping, listening for a while, then 'suddenly realising I'm in a hurry' and walking off! I mean, what right do they have to disturb me while I'm enjoying a day out?
This time was different though... after listening for a few minutes, she really had me thinking. I mean, I always knew alot of people get affected by things like depression, addiction and eating disorders at some point in their lives. What I DIDN'T realise is that it was as many as 1 in 3 of us, and that the charities who help them often find it difficult to raise the funds they need. Such is the stigma that still surrounds these issues, that Mind - the leading charity in the mental health field - don't even have a celebrity patron. Practically unheard of for a charity these days. So I signed up, on the spot, for a direct debit, and have donated my £10 a month ever since.
A few months ago however, while looking through club listings to plan my weekend, it occurred to me that as a promoter of my own night, with plenty of contacts in clubland, I could help out alot more than I already was doing. So, after an all too long absence from clubland, Kix is back - this time in Nottingham - with our biggest event by far to date, and every penny we make will be going to Mind.
MENTALISM is to be held at The Venue in Long Eaton on Friday 25th November, and with every DJ giving up their time and playing for us for absolutely nothing, we are delighted to have a line-up that any hard dance event would be envious of. Two of the real heavyweights in hard house join us, in the form of BK and Andy Farley, and with this being Kix first event in over 6 months, the line-up wouldn't have been complete without Kix favourite DJ GRH.
Not content at stopping there, we've also got a generous helping of the wonderkids to spring up in the Hard Dance scene in the last few years... Ben Kaye, Lee Pasch and MDA & Spherical.
Add to that Storm resident Daley and Kix very own Steve James - including one of their famous Club Classics sets in the bar, which will also play host to Dan Doran, Horris James, and Jimmy Dean & JMF, all with their own very unique interpretations of house! Along with some of the finest up and coming talent there is, including Chris Hoff and Chrysus, in Propulsion vs Licked's FUTURISM room. The result? A fantastic night of hard dance partying... and all for a damn good cause!
